Evening Meeting at King & Wood Mallesons SJ Berwin on Thursday 2nd October at 6.00 pm

The CLA will be holding an evening meeting on Thursday 2nd October, 2014 at King & Wood Mallesons SJ Berwin, 10 Queen Street Place, London EC4R 1BE. Registration for the event will start at 6pm and the panel discussion will start at 6:15pm.

Dr Michael Grenfell, Deb Jones, Catherine Davies and Tom Usher have kindly agreed to speak on the following subject:

"Promoting competition in the regulated sectors - which way forward?”

Dr Michael Grenfell has been a Senior Director in the Competition and Markets Authority since January 2014 where he is responsible for Concurrency and Sectoral Regulation. Prior to his appointment, he was a in private practice for 25 years, specialising in UK and EU competition law and sector regulation, including, from 1998 to 2013, as a Partner in the Antitrust and Competition group at the international law firm . He has written widely on competition law, and was co-author of Coleman and Grenfell on The Competition Act 1998 (OUP).

Deb Jones is Director of Competition at the Financial Conduct Authority, a role which she job-shares with Mary Starks. The work of the competition department includes market studies, developing a competition culture across all divisions of the FCA and will also include concurrent enforcement of competition law from April 2015. Deb was previously a director at the OFT where she worked on a mixture of enforcement cases and policy issues, including major cartel cases such as collusion between BA and Virgin Atlantic over passenger fuel surcharges and fining over 100 construction companies for bid-rigging practices.

Catherine Davies is the Executive Director, Co-operation and Competition at Monitor. She came to Monitor from the Co-operation and Competition Panel, a body set up to advise the Department of Health and Monitor on the application of the system rules governing co-operation and competition in the commissioning and provision of NHS services in England. Catherine is a competition law specialist with experience in all aspects of EU and UK competition law, having advised on mergers and acquisitions, joint

ventures, distribution arrangements and market investigations across a wide range of sectors, including consumer goods, energy, media and healthcare. Catherine also has experience of public procurement law and judicial review. Before joining the Co-operation and Competition Panel in 2009 she worked at the Competition Commission and a large City law firm.

Tom Usher is a partner at King & Wood Mallesons SJ Berwin. He advises financial institutions, retailers and manufacturers (supplying to retail) on all aspects of EC law and UK competition law and has specific expertise in industries based on intellectual property (IP), such as music and film. He also works closely with those that rely on IP and broadcasting rights as essential inputs to their consumer offering, including betting and gaming and terrestrial and pay TV. In addition, he has a particular interest in the financial services sector and other regulated industries. He has considerable expertise in advising on sectoral inquiries in financial services, broadcasting matters, extended warranties and pricing issues.

The meeting will be followed by drinks and canapés. There is no additional charge for members. There will be a charge for non-members: £50, or £35 (full time academic/public sector employees), or £10 (students, trainees, pupil barristers).
