Lyropupa cookei Clench, 1952, is shown to be a synonym of Lyropupa anceyana Cooke & Pilsbry in Pilsbry & Cooke, 1920. The sole Hawaiian record for the North American Strobilops aeneus Pilsbry, 1926, is almost certainly based on a mislabeled specimen, and accordingly this species should be removed from the Hawaiian faunal list. Lyropupa cookei Clench , 1952 Lyropupa Pilsbry, 1900, is a genus of pupilloid land snails endemic to the Hawaiian islands. in their monograph of the genus, Pilsbry & Cooke (1920 in 1918–1920: 253–254, pl. 26, figs. 3, 6) published a description of “ Lyropupa anceyana C. & P., n. sp.,” based on specimens from ola‘a on the island of Hawai‘i held in the collections of Bishop Museum and the Academy of Natural Sciences of Philadelphia. They stated that their new species had previously been misidentified by Ancey (1904:124) as Lyropupa lyrata (Gould, 1843) . Several pages earlier, in their systematic treatment of that species, Pilsbry & Cooke (1918–1920: 235) had also set forth their conclusion that Ancey had misidenti - fied Gould’s species and stated that in fact Ancey’s “description of lyrata was based on specimens of an unnamed species for which the name L. -

All previously known Bulgarian slugs from the Arionidae, Milacidae, Limacidae and Agriolimacidae families have been discussed in this paper. It is based on many years of individual field research, examination of all accessible private and museum collections as well as on critical analysis of the published data. The taxa from families to species are sup plied with synonymy, descriptions of external morphology, anatomy, bionomics, distribution and all records from Bulgaria. It also includes the original key to all species. The illustrative material comprises 118 drawings, including 116 made by the author, and maps of localities on UTM grid. The occurrence of 37 slug species was ascertained, including 1 species (Tandonia pirinia- na) which is quite new for scientists. The occurrence of other 4 species known from publications could not bo established. Basing on the variety of slug fauna two zoogeographical limits were indicated. One separating the Stara Pianina Mountains from south-western massifs (Pirin, Rila, Rodopi, Vitosha. Mountains), the other running across the range of Stara Pianina in the^area of Shipka pass. INTRODUCTION Like other Balkan countries, Bulgaria is an area of Palearctic especially interesting in respect to malacofauna. So far little investigation has been carried out on molluscs of that country and very few papers on slugs (mostly contributions) were published. The papers by B a b o r (1898) and J u r in ić (1906) are the oldest ones. -

Appendix ES-9 Introduction Recent evolutionary radiations on island chains such as the Hawaiian Islands can provide insight into evolutionary processes, such as genetic drift and adaptation (Wallace 1880, Grant and Grant 1994, Losos and Ricklefs 2009). For limited mobility species, colonization processes hold important evolutionary stories not just among islands, but within islands as well (Holland and Hadfield 2002, Parent 2012). One such radiation produced at least 91 species of Hawaiian tree snails in the endemic subfamily Achatinellinae, on at least five of the six main Hawaiian Islands: O‘ahu, Maui, Lana‘i, Moloka‘i, and Hawai‘i (Pilsbry and Cooke 1912–1914, Holland and Hadfield 2007). As simultaneous hermaphrodites with the ability to self-fertilize, colonization events among islands may have occurred via the accidental transfer of a single individual by birds (Pilsbry and Cooke 1912–1914), or via land bridges that connected Maui, Molokai, and Lanai at various points in geologic history (Price and Elliot- Fisk 2004). Early naturalists attributed speciation solely to genetic drift, noting that this subfamily was “still a youthful group in the full flower of their evolution” (Pilsbry and Cooke 1912–1914). However, as these species evolved over dramatic precipitation and temperature gradients, natural selection and adaptation may have been quite rapid as species expanded to fill unexploited niches along environmental gradients, early in this subfamily’s history. As such, species in the subfamily Achatinellinae provide an excellent system for examining both neutral and adaptive processes of evolution. Habitat loss, predation by introduced species, and over-harvesting by collectors led to the extinction of more than 50 species in the subfamily Achatinellinae, and resulted in the declaration of all remaining species in the genus Achatinella as Endangered (Hadfield and Mountain 1980; U.S. -

Unfortunately, much of the Hawaiian land snail fauna has been lost, with overall extinction rates as high as ~70% (Hayes et al ., unpubl. data). However, the recent rediscovery of an extinct species provides hope that all is not lost, yet continued habitat destruction, impacts of invasive species, and climate change, necessi - tate the immediate development and deployment of effective conservation strategies to save this biodiversity treasure before it vanishes entirely (Solem 1990, Rég nier et al . 2009). Achatinellidae Auriculella pulchra Pease 1868 Notable rediscovery Auriculella pulchra (Fig. 1) belongs in the Auriculellinae, a Hawaiian endemic land snail subfamily of the Achatinellidae with 32 species (Cowie et al . 1995). It was originally described from the island of O‘ahu in 1868 and was subsequently recorded throughout the Ko‘olau Mountain range. -

Hausdorf; e-mail: [email protected] (Received 20 March 2018; editorial decision 23 September 2018) ABSTRACT As the basis for an assessment of the impact of introduced land snail and slug species in Indonesia, we pro- vide a list of these species and specify their distribution in Indonesia, their native range, their habitats and their earliest recorded occurrence in Indonesia. We focus in particular on Java, but also provide data for other parts of Indonesia. Fifteen land snail and slug species occurring in Indonesia are considered intro- duced. These introduced species are represented in Indonesia by multiple self-sustaining populations in the wild and, thus, are classified as invasive. Using a generic scoring system, we assess the impact of these spe- cies with regard to natural environments and to socio-economic issues. Based on this, we suggest a prelim- inary prioritization for invasive species. We show that Laevicaulis alte, Sarasinula plebeia, Bradybaena similaris and Lissachatina fulica have the highest negative impact scores. This is mainly because of their impact on agriculture and their possible importance as intermediate hosts of the rat lungworm (Angiostrongylus cantonen- sis), a parasite causing eosinophilic meningitis in humans. -

E. Crampton in 19201 DAVID R. HOPPER 2 AND BARRY D. SMITH 2 ABSTRACT: Tree snails of the family Partulidae have declined on Guam since World War II. One species, indigenous to the western Pacific, Partu/a radio/ata, is still locally common along stream courses in southern areas of the island. The Mariana Island endemic Samoanajragilis is present but not found in abundance anywhere on Guam. Partu/a gibba, another Mariana endemic, is currently known only from one isolated coastal valley along the northwestern coast, and appears to be in a state ofdecline. The Guam endemic Partu/a sa/ifana was not found in areas where it had been previously collected by earlier researchers, and is thus believed to be extinct. The decline and extinction ofthese snails are related to human activities. The single most important factor is likely predation by snails that were introduced as biological control agents for the giant African snail, Achatina ju/ica. The current, most serious threat is probably the introduced flatworm P/atydemus manokwari. This flatworm is also the likely cause of extinctions ofother native and introduced gastropods on Guam and may be the most important threat to the Mariana Partulidae. Land Snails of Leicestershire and Rutland Introduction There are 50 known species of land snail found in Leicestershire and Rutland (VC55) which represents about half of the 100 UK species. However molluscs are an under-recorded taxon group so it is possible that more species could be found and equally possible that a few may now be extinct in our two counties. There was a 20 year period of enthusiastic mollusc recording between 1967 and 1986, principally by museum staff, which account for the majority of species. Whilst records have increased again in the last three years thanks to NatureSpot, some species have not been recorded for over 30 years. All our land snails are in the class Gastropoda and the order Pulmonata. Whilst some of these species require damp habitats and are generally found near to aquatic habitats, they are all able to survive out of water. A number of species are largely restricted to calcareous habitats so are only found at a few sites. The sizes stated refer to the largest dimension of the shell typically found in adult specimens. There is much variation in many species and juveniles will of course be smaller. Note that the images are all greater than life size and not all the to the same scale. I have tried to display them at a sufficiently large scale so that the key features are visible. Always refer to the sizes given in the text. Status refers to abundance in Leicestershire and Rutland (VC55). However molluscs are generally under- recorded so our understanding of their distribution could easily change. -

Specifically, non-native snails and slugs (hereafter ‘snails’) may impact both native vegetation (Joe & Daehler 2008) and native snails (Meyer & Cowie 2010a, b, Sugiura et al. 2011) in areas to which they are introduced. Therefore, it is important that plants to be outplanted, as well as equipment and vehicles used to transport plants, are free of non-native snails. This requires appropriate management practices and control measures to be adopted in the nurseries. For some time the OANRP has been planning to outplant native Hawaiian plants on military land on Oahu as part of its ecological restoration efforts. A major problem associated with this effort is that the plants grown in the nurseries for outplanting can become infested with non- native snails (Cowie et al. 2008), some of which, especially as juveniles, are very small (on the order of 1-2 mm). Preliminary discussions and visits to the Schofield baseyard and the nursery at the Nike site took place prior to the implementation of this agreement and the start of the project.
