It is known for its destructive nature on cultivated crops wherever it occurs and is one of the world’s largest and most damaging land snail pests. The pest is an East African origin, has spread in recent times by travel and trade to many countries. This article is published with open access at Springerlink.com Abstract Terrestrial and aquatic gastropods from the sparse non-marine fossil record of the Eocene in the Tethys upper Eocene (Priabonian) Zalumah Formation in the region. The occurrence of the genera Lanistes, Pila, and Salalah region of the Sultanate of Oman are described. The Gulella along with some pomatiids, probably related to assemblages reflect the composition of the continental extant genera, suggests that the modern African–Arabian mollusc fauna of the Palaeogene of Arabia, which, at that continental faunas can be partly traced back to Eocene time, formed parts of the southeastern Tethys coast. These two new species extend the distribu- tion of the genus considerably northwards, because congeners have been reported from Peru only. For the first time we present anatomical data (radula, buccal mass, morphology of the foot and the genital struc- ture) of Zilchistrophia species. According to these, the genus belongs to the family Scolodontidae, sub- family Scolodontinae (=“Systrophiini”). The previously assumed systematic relationship of Zilchistrophia with the Asian Corillidae and Plectopylidae based on the similarly looking palatal plicae is not supported. ON A NEW SPEOIES OF LAND SHELLS OF THE GENUS KALIELLA. BLANFORD FROM THE SIMLA HILLS (MOLLUSOA, GASTROPODA.: FAMILY ZONITIDAE). By A. S. RAJAGOPALAIENGAR, M.So., Zoological Survey of India, Oalcutta. INTRODUCTION. This paper deals with four tiny land shells of the family Zonitidae received for determination from Dr. M. L. RoonwaI, Entomologist, 'Foredt Research Institute, Dehra Dun with the following interesting note regarding topography of the place from where the specimens were collected :- "The shells were collected from the cups of Arcenthobium minut·i88imum Hook. F. (a parasitic plant belonging to the family Loranthaceae) found on the twigs of Abiea pindrow (Silver fir) in the Simla Hills. These twigs were collected from tops of trees about 50 feet high growing alongside the road from Khadrala to Nankhari about Ii mile from the Khadral& rest house (height 9700 feet above sea level) in the Lower Bashahr forest division, Himachal Pradesh. The material was collected on 21-5-51 by G. D. Bhasin, Assistant Forest Entomologist in this branch. " Unfortunately, nothing is known about the soft parts of the snails. Though very small in size, the specimens, on a closer study, were found to exhibit certain very well-defined and significant features in their shell characters which left no doubt as to their distinctness from any of the hitherto known forms of the genus Kaliella. So, I approached Dr. H. C. Ray, Officer in charge of the Mollusca Section for elucidation. He after examining the same very critically came to & similar conclusion. But in order to be more sure about the identity, he sent the best specimen in the lot to the British Museum (Natural History), Lttndon, for opinion. -

Beside his vita we summarize his malacological work, give an overview about the projects for the protection of species, have a look on his tremendous impetus for the worldwide distribution of malacological knowledge by the establishment of the CHRISTA HEMMEN-Verlag, later ConchBooks, as publishing house, book trader and antiquarian. Last but not least we give a summary of his scientific achievements culminating in 206 publications and containing descriptions of up to now 42 specific taxa.
