Oxyeleotris Colasi (Teleostei: Eleotridae), a New Blind Cave Fish from Lengguru in West Papua, Indonesia
Oxyeleotris colasi (Teleostei: Eleotridae), a new blind cave fish from Lengguru in West Papua, Indonesia by Laurent POUYAUD* (1), KADARUSMAN (1, 2), Renny K. HADIATY (3), Jacques SLEMBROUCK (1), Napoleon LEMAUK (4), Ruby V. KUSUMAH (5) & Philippe KEITH (6) ABSTRACT. - Oxyeleotris colasi is the first hypogean fish recorded from West Papua. The habitat consists of a freshwater pool in the cave of Jabuenggara located in the heart of Seraran anticline in the limestone karst of Lengguru. The new spe- cies is most closely related to the blind cave fishO. caeca described by Allen (1996) from eastern New Guinea. The two troglomorphic species are hypothesised to be related to O. fimbriata, an epigean freshwater gudgeon that ranges widely in New Guinea and northern Australia (Allen, 1996). Oxyeleotris colasi differs from its congeners by the absence of eyes, its skin and fins being totally depigmented, the presence of a well developed sensory papillae system partly consisting of low raised fleshy ridges on each side of the head, a reduced number of cephalic sensory pores, a reduced number of scales on head and body, a long head with a short snout length, a narrow mouth width and a long upper jaw length, body shape with a shallow anterior body depth and narrow body width, a long and deep caudal peduncle, long predorsal and prepectoral lengths, and a long pectoral fin. RÉSUMÉ. - Oxyeleotris colasi, une nouvelle espèce de poisson cavernicole de Lengguru en Papouasie occidentale (Teleostei : Eleotridae). Oxyeleotris colasi est la première espèce de poisson hypogée décrite de Papouasie occidentale. Elle a été capturée dans un trou d’eau douce situé dans la grotte de Jabuenggara au cœur de l’anticlinal de Seraran dans le karst de Lengguru. -

Shelton U.S. Geological Survey, South Carolina Water Science Center, Columbia, SC, USA ABSTRACT: The lower Congo River is one of the deepest, most powerful, and most biologically diverse stretches of river on Earth. The river’s 270 m decent from Malebo Pool though the gorges of the Crystal Mountains to the Atlantic Ocean (498 km downstream) is riddled with rapids, cataracts, and deep pools. Much of the lower Congo is a mystery from a hydraulics perspective. However, this stretch of the river is a hotbed for biologists who are documenting evolution in action within the diverse, but isolated, fish popula- tions. Biologists theorize that isolation of fish populations within the lower Congo is due to barriers pre- sented by flow structure and bathymetry. To investigate this theory, scientists from the U.S. Geological Sur- vey and American Museum of Natural History teamed up with an expedition crew from National Geographic in 2008 to map flow velocity and bathymetry within target reaches in the lower Congo River using acoustic Doppler current profilers (ADCPs) and echo sounders. Simultaneous biological and water quality sampling was also completed. This paper presents some preliminary results from this expedition, specifically with re- gard to the velocity structure and bathymetry. -

Note to parents, teachers, instructors, activity coordinators and to all the fishermen in us: This book is a companion piece to Making a Big Splash with Louisiana Fishes, an exhibit at Louisiana State Universi- ty’s Museum of Natural Science (MNS). Located in Foster Hall on the main campus of LSU, this exhibit created in 2012 contains many of the elements discussed in this book. The MNS exhibit hall is open weekdays, from 8 am to 4 pm, when the LSU campus is open. The MNS visits are free of charge, but call our main office at 225-578-2855 to schedule a visit if your group includes 10 or more students. Of course the book can also be enjoyed on its own and we hope that you will enjoy it on your own or with your children or students. The book and exhibit was funded by the Louisiana Board Of Regents, Traditional Enhancement Grant - Education: Mak- ing a Big Splash with Louisiana Fishes: A Three-tiered Education Program and Museum Exhibit. Funding was obtained by LSUMNS Curators’ Sophie Warny and Prosanta Chakrabarty who designed the exhibit with Southwest Museum Services who built it in 2012. The oarfish in the exhibit was created by Carolyn Thome of the Smithsonian, and images exhibited here are from Curator Chakrabarty unless noted elsewhere (see Appendix II). -

List of Fish Species by Wetland Priority Area Executive Summary In 2002, the government of the Democratic Republic of Congo committed to increase its protected area coverage to 15% from just over 8%. WWF, RAMSAR, OSFAC and other partners supported the effort by convening an expert workshop in Kinshasa, DRC in November 2007, to undertake a country wide biodiversity assessment, including a rapid inventory and prioritization of the biodiversity value of the wetlands of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Several products were developed prior to the workshop to facilitate the work of the experts. These were: (1) a map classifying small sub‐basins in DRC by the predominant aquatic habitat types and (2) a map of human use/suitability. The aquatic habitat or ecosystem map was used as a basis for ensuring representation of all habitat types across the country and the suitability map provided a measure of the level of human impact. -

Body shape is gobylike, head large. Mouth usually oblique with lower jaw protruding beyond upper. Eye development varies from externally visible eyes to rudimentary eyes hidden under the skin. No spines present in fins, except first ray in dorsal fin of Typhlichthys subterraneus reported as spinous. Single dorsal fin with 7–12 rays. Anal fin with 7–11 rays. Shapes of dorsal and anal fins similar. Dorsal fin origin anterior to anal fin origin. Pectoral fins with 9–12 rays. Pelvic fins present with 3–5 rays (usually 4) in Amblyopsis spelaea, absent in remaining five species. Caudal fin elliptical, lanceolate, or rounded. Fin rays branched, except in Speoplatyrhinus poulsoni. Postcleithrum present or absent. Scales cycloid, small and embedded. Branchiostegal rays 6. Gill rakers present in some species, reported as absent in Chologaster cornuta and Forbesichthys agassizii. Swim bladder present. Urogenital opening and anus located in front of the pelvic fins in the thoracic region in adults. -

Abstract During studies of fish helminths, deposited in the Helminthological Collection of the Oswaldo Cruz Institute (CHIOC), some samples of nematodes were studied and identified as Rhabdochona uruyeni Diaz-Ungria, 1968. The present status of the species occurring in South America is discussed and updated. To facilitate further accesses, a worldwide bibliographical survey related to systematic, taxonomic, morphological, biological, cladistical and ecological approaches to the genus, covering a period of 165 years is presented. To date, Rhabdochona (Rhabdochona) acuminata is referred in Argentina, Brazil, and Ecuador, together with Rhabdochona (Filochona) fabianae in Argentina and Rhabdochona (Rhabdochona) uruyeni in Venezuela and now in Brazil, for the first time and in a new host. Also, Rhabdochona spp. are cited in Argentina, Brazil and Peru. -
