The Steam Locomotive Table, v1 If you’re reading this; you either like steam trains, or want to know more about them. Hopefully, either way, I can scratch your itch with this; a set of randomizer/dice-roll tables of my own making; as inspired by some similar tables for tanks and aircrafts. Bear with me, I know not everyone knows the things I do, and I sure know I don’t know a lot of things other train enthusiasts do; but hopefully the descriptions and examples will be enough to get anyone through this smoothly. To begin, you’ll either want a bunch of dice or any online dice-rolling/number generating site (or just pick at your own whim); and somewhere or something to keep track of the details. These tables will give details of a presumed (roughly) standard steam locomotive. No sentinels or other engines with vertical boilers; no climax, shay, etc specially driven locomotives; are considered for this listing as they can change many of the fundamental details of an engine. Go in expecting to make the likes of mainline, branchline, dockyard, etc engines; not the likes of experiments like Bulleid’s Leader or specific industry engines like the aforementioned logging shays. Some dice rolls will have uneven distribution, such as “1-4, and 5-6”. Typically this means that the less likely detail is also one that is/was significantly less common in real life, or significantly more complex to depict. For clarity sake examples will be linked, but you’re always encouraged to look up more as you would like or feel necessary. -

The installation program checks your system for a number of conditions, and INSTALLATION advises you if your system does not meet the conditions. The installation program decompresses and copies numerous files from the distri- bution disks onto your hard drive. The install program also auto-detects your computer’s configuration and provides recommendations for sound, speech, and control device (keyboard, mouse). The entire installation procedure can take a variable amount of time depending on the speed of your computer and hard drive. Technical Notes: This install program creates a sub directory on your hard disk titled “C:\MPS\RAILSDX” and copies all files into that sub directory. It then copies a runtime batch file into your root directory titled “RDX.BAT”, for your convenience. INVENTORS AND Engineers Richard Trevithick (1771-1833) Richard Trevithick was an inventor and mining engineer from Cornwall. He was born on 13th April, 1771, the son of a mining “captain” and a miner’s daughter. At this point, Cornwall was the mining centre of Britain and Trevithick, from a very early age, took an interest in mining and engineering. The second youngest in a family of six he soon stood out from others because of his height (6ft 2 in), which was exceptional for the era. He did poorly at the local village school at Camborne, though showed a talent for arithmetic over all other academic subjects. At the age of 19 he began working with his father at, firstly, East Stray Park Mine, then Wheal Treasury Mine, and in his job he developed an interest in the mechanics of steam power after becoming something of an authority on the repair of the existing mine steam engines. He began work at Ding Dong Colliery in 17?? as its engineer and it was here that he first began to translate his interest in steam power into tangible results. His first experiments involved making a model steam engine, powered by a red-hot poker, which, when inserted into a tube under a boiler, heated the water and produced steam which then moved the engine for a short period. Trevithick’s first full-sized steam engine appeared on Christmas Eve 1801. It was named “Puffing Devil” and it was a road locomotive which was capable of carrying passengers. On its first outing it successfully carried 6 passengers some distance along the road in Camborne. -

This thesis contributes to that debate by proposing that the northern industrial middle class, defined here by occupational status, was more influential than previously has been assumed. The thesis utilises a blended approach by combining two biographical methods, prosopography and individual biography, along with detailed archival research, to explore the interactions between the London and North Western Railway Company and Crewe, from the town’s creation in the 1840s up to the First World War. -

1 The Industrial Middle Class and the Development of Sport in a Railway Town Liam Dyer and Dave Day Department of Exercise and Sport Science Manchester Metropolitan University Corresponding author: [email protected] Word Count including Abstract: Abstract: An increase in industrial activity during the Victorian period led to the creation of industrially focused townships such as Crewe, whose growth was stimulated and sustained by the involvement of the London and North Western Railway Company. As in other townships, the paternalism of the employers was reflected in company involvement in all aspects of the social, political and economic life of Crewe and the influence that was exerted on the local population through the engagement of middle-class managers. Men such as locomotive superintendent Francis Webb and company clerk Thomas Abraham had a significant impact on the sporting and recreational life of the town and this paper explores their life courses in some detail to chronicle their involvement. These men were not public school or university educated but they shared similar attitudes to sport with their middle-class counterparts in the South and this paper uses their biographies to suggest that individuals concerned with the organization of amateur sport across the country adhered to the basics tenets of the amateur ethos. The authors also reinforce the notion that, while the creation of National Governing Bodies was certainly important in structuring late nineteenth-century sport, the enthusiasm, commitment and motivation -

Carriages became progressively heavier to handle increasing demand, while freight tonnage—and the urgency with which it was wanted—also rose substantially. This created a need for two different classes of engine, which lasted for the remainder of what became known as the ‘steam era’. Above.
