  • The Role of Italy in Milton's Early Poetic Development
Italia Conquistata: The Role of Italy in Milton’s Early Poetic Development Submitted by Paul Slade to the University of Exeter as a thesis for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in English in December 2017 This thesis is available for Library use on the understanding that it is copyright material and that no quotation from the thesis may be published without proper acknowledgement. I certify that all material in this thesis which is not my own work has been identified and that no material has previously been submitted and approved for the award of a degree by this or any other University. Signature: ………………………………………………………….. Abstract My thesis explores the way in which the Italian language and literary culture contributed to John Milton’s early development as a poet (over the period up to 1639 and the composition of Epitaphium Damonis). I begin by investigating the nature of the cultural relationship between England and Italy in the late medieval and early modern periods. I then examine how Milton’s own engagement with the Italian language and its literature evolved in the context of his family background, his personal contacts with the London Italian community and modern language teaching in the early seventeenth century as he grew to become a ‘multilingual’ poet. My study then turns to his first published collection of verse, Poems 1645. Here, I reconsider the Italian elements in Milton’s early poetry, beginning with the six poems he wrote in Italian, identifying their place and significance in the overall structure of the volume, and their status and place within the Italian Petrarchan verse tradition.

JAPANESE HAIKU SECOND SERIES ; . *. m $ ( 1 / • i I due roan seasons JAPANESE HAIKU WRITTEN BY BASHO•BUSON ISSA • SHIKI • AND MANY OTHERS TRANSLATION BY PETER BEILENSON THE PETER PAUPER PRESS MOUNT VERNON • NEW YORK COPYRIGHT »958 © BY THE PETER PAUPER PRESS i A NOTE ON JAPANESE HAIKU The haiku is a seventeen-syllable poetic form that has been written in Japan for three hun dred years. It has been enormously popular with out becoming banal. For the haiku does not make a complete poem in our usual sense; it is a lightly- sketched picture the reader is expected to fill in from his own memories. Often there are two pic tures, and the reader is expected to respond with heightened awareness of the mystical relationship between non-related subjects. This mystical awareness is one of the seekings of Zen Buddhism, and was introduced into haiku by the first, best-loved, greatest master of the form, Basho (1644-1694). A second master was Buson (1715-1783), a poet less interested in mystical re lationships than in exquisite vignettes. A third was Issa (1763-1827), pathetic, wryly humorous, ut terly individual. A fourth was Shiki (1866-1902) — a modern Buson who gives us perfectly-phrased glimpses of everyday scenes and situations. Almost every haiku holds a season key-word; often the name of the season itself, otherwise a seasonal reference easily understood. The reader must take this key-word not as a statement, but as the author’s cue to him, so that he can call up 3 in himself his own associations and nostalgias, and read the little poem against this background.

  • 2. Case Study: Anime Music Videos
    2. CASE STUDY: ANIME MUSIC VIDEOS Dana Milstein When on 1 August 1981 at 12:01 a.m. the Buggles’ ‘Video Killed the Radio Star’ aired as MTV’s first music video, its lyrics parodied the very media pre- senting it: ‘We can’t rewind, we’ve gone too far, . put the blame on VTR.’ Influenced by J. G. Ballard’s 1960 short story ‘The Sound Sweep’, Trevor Horn’s song voiced anxiety over the dystopian, artificial world developing as a result of modern technology. Ballard’s story described a world in which natu- rally audible sound, particularly song, is considered to be noise pollution; a sound sweep removes this acoustic noise on a daily basis while radios broad- cast a silent, rescored version of music using a richer, ultrasonic orchestra that subconsciously produces positive feelings in its listeners. Ballard was particu- larly criticising technology’s attempt to manipulate the human voice, by con- tending that the voice as a natural musical instrument can only be generated by ‘non-mechanical means which the neruophonic engineer could never hope, or bother, to duplicate’ (Ballard 2006: 150). Similarly, Horn professed anxiety over a world in which VTRs (video tape recorders) replace real-time radio music with simulacra of those performances. VTRs allowed networks to replay shows, to cater to different time zones, and to rerecord over material. Indeed, the first VTR broadcast occurred on 25 October 1956, when a recording of guest singer Dorothy Collins made the previous night was broadcast ‘live’ on the Jonathan Winters Show. The business of keeping audiences hooked 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, promoted the concept of quantity over quality: yes- terday’s information was irrelevant and could be permanently erased after serving its money-making purpose.
