Der vorliegende Band bietet eine Auswahl von Beiträgen der zwischen dem 21. und dem 24. November 2016 stattgefundenen Konferenz zu Themen der Byzanzforschung. Die vorigen Bände der Reihe konnten im Rahmen des vom Nationalen Forschunsgfonds Ungarn geförderten Projekts OTKA NN 104456 herausgegeben werden, die Veröffentlichung dieses sechsten Bandes ist im Rahmen der dem EC-Forschungszentrum für Byzantinistik 2017 zu- erkannten neuen internationalen Förderung (NKFIH NN 124539 – „Textual Criticism in the Interpretation of Social Context: Byzantium and Beyond“) möglich geworden. Die vorliegende Textsammlung ist Band Nr. XXXII der im Projektantrag angeführten Reihe Antiquitas · Byzantium · Renascentia und erscheint gleichzeitig mit den zwei weiteren, die französisch- bzw. deutsch- sprachigen Studien des Symposiums enthaltenden Sammelbänden Byzance et l’Occident IV. (hgg. von Emese Egedi-Kovács, Collège Eötvös József ELTE, Budapest, 2018) sowie Quelle und Deutung IV. Beiträge der Tagung Quelle und Deutung IV am 23. November 2016 (hgg. von Balázs Sára, ELTE Eötvös-József- Collegium, Budapest, 2018 [= EC-Beiträge zur Erforschung deutschsprachiger Handschriften des Mittelalters und der Frühen Neuzeit, Bd. I.IV]). Budapest, den 12. März 2018 Erika Juhász Peter Schreiner Der Koloman-Palast in Konstantinopel und die Árpáden Mit keinem anderen Staat stand das byzantinische Reich zwischen dem 10. und dem 15. Jh. in so kontinuierlichen, teilweise engen politischen Beziehungen wie mit Ungarn. Diese Tradition, die mit dem Königshaus der Árpáden und der longue durée ihres dreihundertjährigen Wirkens verbunden ist, hatten die Grundlagen für eine weitere Verbindungen unter dem Haus Anjou im 14. und 15. Jh. geschaffen. Auch wenn Ungarn von seiner staatlichen und kirchlichen Struktur her seit der Christianisierung zum Westen gehörte und die geistli- che und weltliche Macht des Papsttums nie in Frage gestellt hat, stand es seit seiner Staatwerdung immer in engeren politischen Bindungen zum großen Kaiserreich im Osten als zu den westlichen Mächten, besonders in der Abwehr der Türken im 14. und 15. Jahrhundert, die weitgehend frei von den Zwängen einer Unionspolitik war.1 Die Ungarn haben nach ihrer Landnahme das Interesse byzantinischer Autoren gefunden, engere politische Kontakte setzten aber erst nach dem Tod des Zaren Samuil und dem Ende des Ersten Bulgarischen Reiches (1018) ein, als der byzantinische und der ungarische Staat zu Grenznachbarn wurden. Wir betrachten in diesem Beitrag, der sich einem Palast der Ungarn in der Kaiserstadt widmet, die gegenseitigen Kontakte ganz unter dem Aspekt der Familienpolitik ihrer Herrscher und der Präsenz von Mitgliedern des Árpádenhauses in Konstantinopel. I. Am Beginn der byzantinisch-ungarischen Familienverbindungen Die erste Annäherung fällt bereits in die Zeit Andreas’ I. (1046–1060) und findet ihren sichtbaren Ausdruck in der Übersendung einer Ehrenkrone, 1 Charakteristisch für diese politische Nähe auch in der Spätzeit ist die Tatsache, dass die erste Auslandsreise eines byzantinischen Kaisers überhaupt in der langen Geschichte des Reiches, jene Johannes V., diesen im Herbst 1365 an den Hof nach Buda zu König Ludwig I. führte (Halecki, O.: Un empereur de Byzance à Rome. Warschau 1930, 111–137, und Moravcsik, Gy.: Vizantijskie imperatory i ich posly v gorode Buda. Acta Historica Academiae Scientiarum Hungaricae 8 (1961) 243–246. 14 Peter Schreiner die als byzantinisches Geschenk wahrscheinlich anläßlich seiner Krönung (1046), aber nicht später als 1050 angefertigt wurde, da sie neben Konstantin IX. Monomachos auch eine Darstellung der Kaiserin Zoe trägt, die in diesem Jahr verstarb. Die Krone, bei der es sich um eine Frauenkrone handelt, birgt eine Fülle von Problemen in sich, die an dieser Stelle nicht diskutiert werden können.2 Unabhängig von diesem immer noch umstrittenen Objekt fallen die ersten nachweisbaren Kontakte mit Ungarn in die Zeit des Königs Andreas.3 Ein Vierteljahrhundert später, zwischen 1065 und 1074, finden wir einen von der Quellenlage her klar belegten Kontakt: die Heirat zwischen Géza I. und einer byzantinischen Adeligen aus der Familie der Synadenoi, deren Onkel der spätere Kaiser Nikephoros III. Botaneiates (1078–1081) war. Im Hintergrund des politi- schen Interesses standen die militärischen Auseinandersetzungen beider Staaten an der gemeinsamen Nordgrenze gegen Petschenegen und Uzen seit Beginn der sechziger Jahre. Dort lag auf der ungarischen Seite der von Géza (dem späteren König), Sohn des Béla, verwaltete Militärbezirk, auf byzantinischer jener des Nikephoros Botaneiates.4 Géza war, gerade angesichts der ständigen dynastischen Streitigkeiten im Árpádenhaus an familiären Beziehungen mit Byzanz interes- siert.5 Es läßt sich nicht genau festlegen, ob die (sicherlich von Nikephoros ver- mittelte Heirat) in die Zeit um 1065 fällt,6 oder später, am Anfang der Regierung Kaiser Michaels VII. (1071–1078) anzunehmen ist. Istanbul has been for a long time the symbol of an oriental city and lifestyle in the Western European mind – an image that was transmitted especially in poetry and dramatic texts. Belgrade seems to be present in a different way in the European cultural memory. Analysis of the representation of history related to Belgrade in the medium of theatre is based on the four selected historical theatre texts: Hannah Brand’s Huniades, or The Siege of Belgrade (Norwich, 1791/1798); Carl Kisfaludy’s Ilka oder die Einnahme von Griechisch-Weissenburg (Pest, 1814); James Cobb’s The Siege of Belgrade (London 1791/1828); und Friedrich Kaiser’s General Laudon (Vienna, 1875). In this article I would like to investigate the historical image of Belgrade created by European playwrights and librettists of the eighteenth and nineteenth century. What are the contents transported in the dramatic texts about Belgrade? Is a certain historical-political context present, which dominates the entertainment factor? Istanbul has been for a long time the symbol of an oriental city and lifestyle in the Western European mind – an image that was transmitted especially in poetry and dramatic texts. Belgrade seems to be present in a different way in the European cultural memory. This is what the scripture teaches in opposition to the mythologies of the ancient and modern worlds. If "the simplicity which is in Christ" had not been departed from, there would have been no catholic and protestant daemonialism. The dogma of inherent immortality in sin's flesh would have remained with the old pagans; but the faith was departed from by those who ought to have been its earnest defenders.
