UNIVERSITY OF CALIFORNIA Los Angeles Marvelous Generations: Lancastrian Genealogies and Translation in Late Medieval and Early Modern England and Iberia A dissertation submitted in partial satisfaction of the requirements for the degree Doctor of Philosophy in English by Sara Victoria Torres 2014 © Copyright by Sara Victoria Torres 2014 ABSTRACT OF THE DISSERTATION Marvelous Generations: Lancastrian Genealogies and Translation in Late Medieval and Early Modern England and Iberia by Sara Victoria Torres Doctor of Philosophy in English University of California, Los Angeles, 2014 Professor Christine Chism, Co-chair Professor Lowell Gallagher, Co-chair My dissertation, “Marvelous Generations: Lancastrian Genealogies and Translation in Late Medieval and Early Modern England and Iberia,” traces the legacy of dynastic internationalism in the fifteenth, sixteenth, and early-seventeenth centuries. I argue that the situated tactics of courtly literature use genealogical and geographical paradigms to redefine national sovereignty. Before the defeat of the Spanish Armada in 1588, before the divorce trials of Henry VIII and Catherine of Aragon in the 1530s, a rich and complex network of dynastic, economic, and political alliances existed between medieval England and the Iberian kingdoms. The marriages of John of Gaunt’s two daughters to the Castilian and Portuguese kings created a legacy of Anglo-Iberian cultural exchange ii that is evident in the literature and manuscript culture of both England and Iberia. Because England, Castile, and Portugal all saw the rise of new dynastic lines at the end of the fourteenth century, the subsequent literature produced at their courts is preoccupied with issues of genealogy, just rule, and political consent. Dynastic foundation narratives compensate for the uncertainties of succession by evoking the longue durée of national histories—of Trojan diaspora narratives, of Roman rule, of apostolic foundation—and situating them within universalizing historical modes. -
Isabel Clara Eugenia and Peter Paul Rubens’S the Triumph of the Eucharist Tapestry Series
ABSTRACT Title of Document: PIETY, POLITICS, AND PATRONAGE: ISABEL CLARA EUGENIA AND PETER PAUL RUBENS’S THE TRIUMPH OF THE EUCHARIST TAPESTRY SERIES Alexandra Billington Libby, Doctor of Philosophy, 2013 Directed By: Professor Arthur K. Wheelock, Jr., Department of Art History and Archeology This dissertation explores the circumstances that inspired the Infanta Isabel Clara Eugenia, Princess of Spain, Archduchess of Austria, and Governess General of the Southern Netherlands to commission Peter Paul Rubens’s The Triumph of the Eucharist tapestry series for the Madrid convent of the Descalzas Reales. It traces the commission of the twenty large-scale tapestries that comprise the series to the aftermath of an important victory of the Infanta’s army over the Dutch in the town of Breda. Relying on contemporary literature, studies of the Infanta’s upbringing, and the tapestries themselves, it argues that the cycle was likely conceived as an ex-voto, or gift of thanks to God for the military triumph. In my discussion, I highlight previously unrecognized temporal and thematic connections between Isabel’s many other gestures of thanks in the wake of the victory and The Triumph of the Eucharist series. I further show how Rubens invested the tapestries with imagery and a conceptual conceit that celebrated the Eucharist in ways that symbolically evoked the triumph at Breda. My study also explores the motivations behind Isabel’s decision to give the series to the Descalzas Reales. It discusses how as an ex-voto, the tapestries implicitly credited her for the triumph and, thereby, affirmed her terrestrial authority. Drawing on the history of the convent and its use by the king of Spain as both a religious and political dynastic center, it shows that the series was not only a gift to the convent, but also a gift to the king, a man with whom the Infanta had developed a tense relationship over the question of her political autonomy. -

The Corazzieri, the Italian Corps of Cuirassiers The Origins The first trace of a company of Archers and Squires entrusted with task of guaranteeing the security of the residence and of the members of the House of Savoy dates back to the 15th Century. The corps was established when Emmanuel Philibert, Duke of Savoy, (1553-1580) nicknamed “Testa di Ferro” (Ironhead), created the “Guard of Honour of the Prince”, a company of about fifty men under the command of a captain who had their baptism of fire in the victorious battle of St. Quintin, on the 10th of August 1557. After having been constantly amplified, in terms of men and tasks, in the 1630s the unit comprised at least 400 men divided into four companies, one of which was the “Company of His Highness’s Cuirasses”, whose members began to wear the monogram of the State authority on the breastplate of their armours. Despite the constant change in institutional forms, this tradition has been handed down to our days. From Victor Amadeus II to Victor Emmanuel I Under the long reign of Victor Amadeus II (1675-1730), the different units of the security and ceremonial guards were merged into a single corps called the "Guardie del Corpo" (“Body Guards”), which was subdivided into four companies of Body Guards, one company of the Guards of the Door and one company of the Swiss Guards. From then and through another century, few changes were made to the uniforms or to the composition of the unit, which was deployed in normal institutional tasks as well as in frequent war campaigns, where they distinguished themselves for their excellence. -

Portuguese Family Names GERALD M. MOSER 1 Point Cabrillo reflects the Spanish spelling of the nickname of J oao Rodrigues Oabrilho - "the I(id," perhaps a play on words, if the Viscount De Lagoa was correct in assuming that this Portuguese navigator was born in one of the many villages in Portugal called Oabril (Joao Rodrigues Oabrilho, A Biographical Sketch, Lisbon, Agencia Geral do mtramar, 1957, p. 19). 2 Oastroville, Texas, -- there is another town of the same name in California - was named after its founder, Henry Oastro, a Portuguese Jew from France, who came to Providence, R.I., in 1827. From there he went to Texas in 1842, launching a colonization scheme, mainly on land near San Antonio. I came upon the story in the Genealogy Department of the Dallas Public Library, on the eve of reading to the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese a paper on "Cultural Linguistics: The Case of the Portuguese Family Names" (December 28, 1957). The present article is an enlarged version of that paper. 30 38 Gerald M. An Overview of the Doctrine of the Holy Crown of Hungary Gábor Hollósi On the occasion of the fortieth anniversary of the United States returning to Hungary her symbol of enduring constitutionality, the story of the Holy Crown is once again front and center. Our use of the word “symbol” already in the very first sentence is intentional, for in addition to the “visible” manifestation of the crown, an “invisible” aspect surrounds it as well.1 The invisible crown represents a set of ideas that is embodied in our Holy Crown. Throughout the history of our constitution, the most important of these is the so-called Doctrine of the Holy Crown, which is what we focus on below. How do the Concept of the Holy Crown and the Doctrine of the Holy Crown differ? Although the literature often uses the terms interchangeably, we believe that separately defining them is more appropriate.2 The Con- cept of the Holy Crown covers the symbolism of the crown (for now let us set aside the point from which we may consider the Hungarian crown as holy). For example in King St. Stephen’s (1001–1038) Ad- monitions to his son Prince Emeric, the crown appears as both earthly royal authority and as the symbol of heavenly and eternal power.3 Later, the Holy Crown itself came to symbolize the territory of the state; we often come across the phrase: “Lands of the Holy Crown”. These are, of course, only examples. -
Broken Bodies at Play: Physical Comedy and Ironic Bodies in Heinrich Von Kleist’S Dramas
BROKEN BODIES AT PLAY: PHYSICAL COMEDY AND IRONIC BODIES IN HEINRICH VON KLEIST’S DRAMAS by Christina Hinz A dissertation submitted to Johns Hopkins University in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Baltimore, Maryland July 2020 © 2020 Christina Hinz All Rights Reserved Abstract The present dissertation examines broken bodies in the plays of the German dramatist Heinrich von Kleist, applying a particular focus on the movements, gestures and, most importantly, fractures and injuries of these bodies to propose their fragmentation and brokenness as a form of physical comedy and a unique conceptualization of corporeal irony. Three plays, Das Käthchen von Heilbronn, Der zerbrochne Krug and Penthesilea, exemplify Kleist’s distinctive use of organic and inorganic broken bodies as vehicles for the representation and performance of both ironic and comic effects. The approach adopted here is mostly informed by literary theory, literary aesthetics, theories of laughter and the comic, profiting mainly from the formulations of Paul de Man, Friedrich Schlegel, August Wilhelm Schlegel, Arthur Schopenhauer, Immanuel Kant and Friedrich Schiller. Putting these theories into dialogue with Kleist’s plays, I argue that he creates his own often complex form of physical comedy, achieved through the fractures, movements and appearances of the bodies, and invents an equally complex form of materialized bodily irony that lies outside the understanding of irony as a rhetorical device. I further contend that the representations and performances of Kleist’s broken bodies challenge theoretical and conceptual frameworks of this time, as detailed in the central three chapters. Adam and the titular pitcher are two broken bodies that critique dysfunctional power structures, while Käthchen’s leap from her window, fracturing her own legs, weighs in on contemporaneous ideals of femininity.
