Starting Monday, December 21, 2020, Ontario beef farmers can apply for funding to help cover increased costs of feeding and setting aside market-ready cattle due to COVID-19 related processing delays. This funding flows from an agreement reached by the gov- ernments this spring to support these producers, in a timely man- ner, in the event that processing disruptions impacted the sector. “We care deeply about the well-being of our farmers and understand the repercussions that short-term capacity reduc- tions have on livestock produc- ers,” said the Honourable Ma- rie-Claude Bibeau, Minister of The project will set up a $26.6 millon Enhanced Agri-Food Workplace Protection Program. Action Urged to Improve Safety, End Carnage on - DC Motor Construction Sites TORONTO: In the past week, four workers have been killed at their job on an Ontario construction site, and just yesterday, a fifth worker died at an industrial workplace in Stoney Creek. The Ontario Federation of Labour (OFL) said it was devastated by these fatal incidents. “While we mourn the lives that were lost, and hope the workers who were in- jured recover quickly, we demand immediate action to stop workers’ deaths on construction sites, and in every workplace across Ontario,”, it said in a state- ment. “The Ford government must immediately take ac- tion to improve protections for workers on construc- tion sites. Workers must be guaranteed their safety and well-being is the primary concern and focus,” said OFL President Patty Coates. “This recent string of tragedies makes it clear that we must do more to protect Ontario workers. We demand urgent action by this government.” After the Metron Construction Christmas Eve tragedy in 2009, the OFL launched a campaign for more robust and enhanced protections for work- ers. In that devastating swing stage collapse, five workers plunged 13 stories, four of those workers died. The OFL called for a more vigorous use of the Criminal Code of Canada’s ‘Westray amendments’ to ensure greater accountability for worker protec- tion. Once again, we need action and more robust measures to protect workers. In response to the Metron tragedy, the provincial government created an Expert Panel on Workplace Health and Safety and launched a province-wide re- view that resulted in significant amendments to On- tario laws designed to prevent future tragedies. “Similar urgent action is once again required,” said Coates. “We must redouble efforts to ensure that every worker is protected through robust health and safety measures and beefed-up protocols and proce- dures.” The OFL is calling on the Province to strike another Expert Panel, and immediately launch a tar- geted health and safety enforcement blitz. This December of death in Ontario workplaces is clearly unacceptable. The province must take urgent and immediate action to improve construction site safety. One death is one too many. The OFL, our af- filiated members and community allies vow to keep pressuring the Ford government into action to pro- tect Ontario’s workers. The Ontario Federation of Labour represents 54 unions and one million workers in Ontario. Electric vehicles are energy and cost efficient Electric-drive motors are much more efficient than combustion engines and drivetrains. The effi- ciency of energy conversion from on-board storage to turning the wheels is nearly five times great- er for electricity than gasoline, at approximately 76% and 16%, re- spectively. Electric vehicles also increase a vehicle’s efficiency by using regenerative braking tech- nology to recover energy that would otherwise have been lost. PHEVs and BEVs can be re- charged from a charging station that uses standard 240-volt elec- trical power (the kind used for stoves and clothes dryers in most homes). Most can be recharged from a 110-volt service, although charging time will be significant- ly longer. The cost of electricity per kilo- metre is much lower than that of gasoline: a BEV costs about 2 to 3 ¢/km (at 13 ¢/kWh), compared to a typical 4-cylinder gasoline ve- hicle at 7 to 8 ¢/km (at $1.00/L).
