San Jose Scale and Its Natural Enemies: Investigating Natural Or Augmented Controls
California Tree Fruit Agreement Research Report 2002 SAN JOSE SCALE AND ITS NATURAL ENEMIES: INVESTIGATING NATURAL OR AUGMENTED CONTROLS Project Leaders: Kent M. Daane Cooperators: Glenn Y. Yokota, Walter J. Bentley, Karen Sime, and Brian Hogg ABSTRACT San Jose scale (SJS) and its natural enemies were studied from 1999 through 2002. Natural populations were followed in stone fruit and almond blocks, with orchard management practices divided into “conventional” and “sustainable” practices, based on dormant and in-season insecticide use. Results generally show higher fruit damage at harvest-time in sustainably managed fields, although, these results are not consistent among orchards and exceptions to this pattern were found. In conventionally managed blocks, later harvest dates resulted in higher SJS fruit damage, although this did not hold true in sustainably managed orchards. Results from SJS pheromone-baited traps show a predominant seasonal pattern of SJS densities progressively increasing and parasitoid (Encarsia perniciosi) densities progressively decreasing. These data are discussed with respect to SJS fruit damage and parasitoid establishment and efficiency. SJS and parasitoid sampling methodology and distribution were investigated. Comparing SJS pheromone trap data to numbers of crawlers on double-sided sticky tape and SJS infested fruit at harvest show a significant correlation between pheromone trap counts of SJS males and numbers of SJS crawlers. Results suggest that there is a small window in the season (April-May) when sticky tape provides important information on crawler abundance and damage. Results show a negative correlation between the early season abundance of Encarsia (as measured by pheromone traps) and SJS damage at harvest. These results suggest that early-season ratios of parasitoid : SJS can not be used to predict fruit damage or biological control (these data require more analysis). -

FAIRCHILD VISITED MISS SESSIONS: SAN DIEGO 19191 ■ By Nancy Carol Carter n 1939, Kate Sessions received the prestigious Frank N. Meyer Medal for distinguished services in plant introduction by the American Genetics Association. IShe joined the ranks of previously recognized male botanists, including Louis Charles Trabut, a French doctor teaching at the University of Algiers; Henry Nicholas Ridley, an Englishman who learned to tap the rubber tree for latex; Palemon Howard Dorsett, who spent the 1920s identifying plants in China and Japan; and wealthy amateur plant explorers Barbour Lathrop and Allison V. Armour. It was thirty years before another woman received the same honor.2 Sessions was nominated for the award by David Fairchild, plant explorer, botanist and United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) official. A newly-explored archive of letters, photographs and manuscripts at the Fairchild Tropical Botanical Garden expands our knowledge of their relationship. Their seventeen-year-long correspon- dence suggests that he was the most enduring and influential of her professional contacts.3 This article reveals both the professional and the personal nature of their relationship, giving us a more nuanced understanding of Kate Sessions herself. By the end of the nineteenth century, botany had moved almost entirely from its Enlightenment origins as a proper and recommended activity for women and children to a professionalized and almost exclusively male pursuit within the science culture. Some exceptional women made a place for themselves in the field at this early date, but had to overcome barriers. -

A virus-like pathogen thus probably causes little cherry disease (Eastwell et al., 1996). EPPO computer code: CRLCXX EU Annex designation: II/A1 - for non-European isolates HOSTS Sweet cherry (Prunus avium) is the most sensitive host of the disease which causes fruit symptoms also in sour cherry (P. cerasus) and in P. pensylvanica. The ornamental cherries P. incisa, P. serrulata, P. sieboldii, P. subhirtella and P. yedoensis are often latently infected, especially the cultivars of the oriental flowering cherry P. serrulata including the cvs Kanzan and Shirofugen. P. emarginata, P. mahaleb and P. tomentosa were demonstrated as further tolerant hosts of the pathogen, while apricots, plums, peaches and P. virginiana could not be infected in experiments to transmit the pathogen of little cherry disease by bud-inoculation (Welsh & Cheney, 1976). With the exception of the American wild cherry species P. emarginata and P. pensylvanica, all host plants are cultivated in Europe as fruit trees or ornamental plants; sweet cherry and P. mahaleb are also endemic wild species. GEOGRAPHICAL DISTRIBUTION The disease, which originated in Japan, is probably now distributed world-wide in latently infected ornamental cherries. -
A Symbol Becomes the Culture: Reinventing Japanese Cherry Blossoms
LUND UNIVERSITY • CENTRE FOR EAST AND SOUTH-EAST ASIAN STUDIES A symbol becomes the culture: Reinventing Japanese cherry blossoms Author: Hanyan Ye Supervisor: Annika Pissin Master’s Programme in Asian Studies Spring semester 2015 ABSTRACT A major concern of this thesis was the changing meanings of cherry blossoms in Japanese history, and the images of Japan created through the flower. With a peculiar emphasis on today’s international context, when cherry blossoms have become a unique culture of Japan, this research inquired into the process of symbol-making. The Zenith concept of nyoze and poststructural discussions on language-power relations functioned as critical theoretical tools in revealing the articulation of knowledge within meanings related to the symbol, which empowered certain “truths” at different historical stages. In addition, the thesis illustrated that aestheticization and commodification were the two prominent forces in reinventing meanings, making them appear natural or commonsensical. Meanwhile, supported by interview findings, the thesis investigated into the uniqueness and authenticity of cherry blossoms in Japan, and contended that they !reinforced the asserted cultural homogeneity of the country. Yang All rights reserved ABSTRACT Market, Medicine, and Empire: Hoshi Pharmaceuticals in the Interwar Years Timothy M. Yang This dissertation examines the connections between global capitalism, modern medicine, and empire through a close study of Hoshi Pharmaceuticals during the interwar years. As one of the leading drug companies in East Asia at the time, Hoshi embodied Japan's imperial aspirations, rapid industrial development, and burgeoning consumer culture. The company attempted to control every part of its supply and distribution chain: it managed plantations in the mountains of Taiwan and Peru for growing coca and cinchona (the raw material for quinine) and contracted Turkish poppy farmers to supply raw opium for government-owned refineries in Taiwan. Hoshi also helped shape modern consumer culture in Japan and its colonies, and indeed, became an emblem for it. At its peak in the early 1920s, Hoshi had a network of chain stores across Asia that sold Hoshi-brand patent medicines, hygiene products, and household goods. In 1925, however, the company's fortunes turned for the worse when an opium trading violation raised suspicions of Hoshi as a front for the smuggling of narcotics through Manchuria and China. Although the company was a key supplier of medicines to Japan's military during World War Two, it could not financially recover from the fallout of the opium scandal. -

SINENSIS) (HEMIPTERA: COCCIDAE) ON CITRUS Peter L. La Soft wax scale (SWS) Ceroplastes destructor (Newstead) and Chinese wax scale (CWS) C. sinensis Del Guercio (Hemiptera: Coccidae) are indirect pests of citrus (Citrus spp.) in New Zealand. Honeydew they produce supports sooty mould fungi that disfigure fruit and reduce photosynthesis and fruit yield. Presently, control relies on calendar applications of insecticides. The main aim of this study was to provide the ecological basis for the integrated management of SWS and CWS. Specific objectives were to compare their population ecologies, determine major mortality factors and levels of natural control, quantify the impact of ladybirds on scale populations, and evaluate pesticides for compatibility with ladybirds. Among 57 surveyed orchards, SWS was more abundant than CWS in Kerikeri but was not found around Whangarei. Applications of organophosphates had not reduced the proportion of orchards with medium or high densities of SWS. Monthly destructive sampling of scale populations between November 1990 and February 1994 was supplemented by in situ counts of scale cohorts. Both species were univoltine, but SWS eggs hatched two months earlier than those of CWS, and development between successive instars remained two to three months ahead.
