FAIRCHILD VISITED MISS SESSIONS: SAN DIEGO 19191 ■ By Nancy Carol Carter n 1939, Kate Sessions received the prestigious Frank N. Meyer Medal for distinguished services in plant introduction by the American Genetics Association. IShe joined the ranks of previously recognized male botanists, including Louis Charles Trabut, a French doctor teaching at the University of Algiers; Henry Nicholas Ridley, an Englishman who learned to tap the rubber tree for latex; Palemon Howard Dorsett, who spent the 1920s identifying plants in China and Japan; and wealthy amateur plant explorers Barbour Lathrop and Allison V. Armour. It was thirty years before another woman received the same honor.2 Sessions was nominated for the award by David Fairchild, plant explorer, botanist and United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) official. A newly-explored archive of letters, photographs and manuscripts at the Fairchild Tropical Botanical Garden expands our knowledge of their relationship. Their seventeen-year-long correspon- dence suggests that he was the most enduring and influential of her professional contacts.3 This article reveals both the professional and the personal nature of their relationship, giving us a more nuanced understanding of Kate Sessions herself. By the end of the nineteenth century, botany had moved almost entirely from its Enlightenment origins as a proper and recommended activity for women and children to a professionalized and almost exclusively male pursuit within the science culture. Some exceptional women made a place for themselves in the field at this early date, but had to overcome barriers. -

Julio Assis Cavalheiro, 2000, Bairro Industrial , 85601-000 , Francisco Beltrão , Paraná , Brazil Abstract The purpose of this work was to assess the antimicrobial activity of extracts from Urera baccifera. Aqueous, ethanol and methanol extracts made from the leaves, bark and roots of U. baccifera were tested, at different concentrations using the disk diffusion method, against the bacteria Staphylococcus aureus (ATCC 25923), Escherichia coli (ATCC 25922) and Pseudomonas aeruginosa (ATCC 27853). Inoculated plates were incubated at 35º C ± 1 C for 24 hours and the inhibition halos were assessed and interpreted. The methanol extracts from the leaves (ML) and roots (MR) had greatest antimicrobial activity against the three bacteria tested. The MICs of the ML and MR extracts against E. coli were 6.25 and 0.19 mg/L, respectively, and against P. aeruginosa and S. aureus they were 3.12 and 0.19 mg/L (for both species). The results show that the methanol extracts of the leaves and roots of U. baccifera are antimicrobially active against E. coli, P. aeruginosa and S . aureus. 1 “Where the Adventure Began: Touring the Home Town of the Food Explorers” A self guided driving tour of Manhattan, Kansas Developed by the Riley County Historical Society and Museum November 2018 (This is a work in progress. If you have corrections or suggestions, please contact the Riley County Historical Museum.) This self-guided driving tour was developed for the 2018 Kansas State University K-State Science Communication Week activities to coordinate with the events sponsored by the Kansas State University Global Food Systems Initiative around the book “The Food Explorer: The True Adventures of the Globe-Trotting Botanist Who Transformed What America Eats” by Daniel Stone. The tour primarily focuses on the Manhattan places between 1864, when the Marlatt family returned to Manhattan from a short stay in the Kansas City area, and 1897, when the Fairchild family left Manhattan. That period in Manhattan would been part of the lives of David Fairchild, the “Globe-Trotting Botanist Who Transformed What America Eats” and two of his childhood friends and colleagues, Charles L. Marlatt, and Walter T. Swingle. In 1880 Manhattan had a population of 2,105 and Kansas State Agricultural College had an enrollment of 267. In 1890 Manhattan had a population of 3,004 and Kansas State Agricultural College had an enrollment of 593. David G. Fairchild (1869 – 1954) was the son of Kansas State Agricultural College President George T. Fairchild and Charlotte Halsted Fairchild. His family came to Manhattan in 1879, when his father took the job as KSAC President. David graduated from KSAC in 1888 and began a long, adventurous, and productive career as a “food explorer” for the Office of Seed and Plant Introduction of the U.S. -

True stinging hairs are highly specialized plant structures that are able to inject a physiologically active liquid into the skin and can be differentiated from irritant hairs (causing mechanical damage only). Stinging hairs can be classified into two basic types: Urtica-type stinging hairs with the classical “hypodermic syringe” mechanism expelling only liquid, and Tragia-type stinging hairs expelling a liquid together with a sharp crystal. In total, there are some 650 plant species with stinging hairs across five remotely related plant families (i.e., belonging to different plant orders). The family Urticaceae (order Rosales) includes a total of ca. 150 stinging representatives, amongst them the well-known stinging nettles (genus Urtica). There are also some 200 stinging species in Loasaceae (order Cornales), ca. 250 stinging species in Euphorbiaceae (order Malphigiales), a handful of species in Namaceae (order Boraginales), and one in Caricaceae (order Brassicales). Stinging hairs are commonly found on most aerial parts of the plants, especially the stem and leaves, but sometimes also on flowers and fruits. The ecological role of stinging hairs in plants seems to be essentially defense against mammalian herbivores, while they appear to be essentially inefficient against invertebrate pests.
