  • 1/14 Lost in Beijing: Ruthless Profiteer and Decadence of Family Values
2012 American Comparative Literature Association Annual Meeting Ho Lost in Beijing: Ruthless Profiteer and Decadence of Family Values as Social Commentary and Its Limits Lost in Beijing: Ruthless Profiteer and Decadence of Family Values as Social Commentary and Its Limits ©Wing Shan Ho Speedy economic development in neo-liberal China has generated significant anxiety about the impact of the prevalent money-oriented economic order on subjectivity and the private sphere. As Chinese citizens from all walks of life become more conscious of profits/benefits (li), the urge to acquire money and the pressure to strive for a viable livelihood might be felt more keenly by the social underclass. How do members of the underclass respond to the changing economic order? What are they willing to sacrifice for economic survival and in the pursuit of affluence? How have the concepts of self, family, and community changed accordingly? These questions lead me to examine the state-criticized film Lost in Beijing (Pingguo) (Li Yu, 2007), which portrays a ruthless economic subjects who destroys family bonds and affection. This article offers a contextualized, close reading of Lost in Beijing and explores how filmic representation offers social commentary through dramatized conflicts between money and family values. I argue that Lost in Beijing, which portrays the selling of a son, critiques the logic of capitalism and monetary profit for the way in which it reduces human beings and affective bonding to mere commodities. Such a critical attitude results in not only portrayals of a ruthless economic subject but also sympathy of female victims of China’s economic growth whose depictions elicit the state’s censure.

  • ——An Analysis Based on Li Yu's Four Films
For Doing Women’s Film History Conference Changing the Images of Woman in Contemporary Chinese Cinema ——An Analysis based on Li Yu’s Four Films By Si Da Introduction Western theories may not function well when evaluating Chinese reality. An obvious example is China set up a socialism reign upon an economic base of abject poverty in 1949, thus oppugned the absolutism of Marxism that the superstructure is determined by the socio-economic base. However, the effort of integrating Chinese context with western theory has never stopped, and independent film is a great field for this practice. Unlike industrial/commercial film whose main target is profit, the original intention of independent film is hard to define. It may come from an enthusiasm for creation, a dissatisfaction of internal contradiction of the society, the utilitarianism of film festival awards, or simply a practice in linking up the text with overseas theories. When women are involved in film production, gender research and female criticism (not merely feminism) provide important extra perspectives and point of views in understanding films. In these films made by women, some are “interpellated” by phallocentrism and proficiently told in a structure of patriarchal narration that we rarely perceive the filmmakers’ female identity①. The other films, no matter if the filmmakers admit they are feminists, do bear gender features and special concerns in storytelling, thus become a place for theory and practice to examine each other. Chinese female director Li Yu is apparently the latter. Based on four films directed by Li Yu, this paper analyzes the heritage and variance of woman characters in contemporary Chinese films.

Infrastructures of Critique: Art and Visual Culture in Contemporary Beijing (1978-2012) by Elizabeth Chamberlin Parke A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of East Asian Studies University of Toronto © Copyright by Elizabeth Chamberlin Parke 2016 Infrastructures of Critique: Art and Visual Culture in Contemporary Beijing (1978-2012) Elizabeth Chamberlin Parke Doctor of Philosophy Department of East Asian Studies University of Toronto 2016 Abstract This dissertation is a story about relationships between artists, their work, and the physical infrastructure of Beijing. I argue that infrastructure’s utilitarianism has relegated it to a category of nothing to see, and that this tautology effectively shrouds other possible interpretations. My findings establish counter-narratives and critiques of Beijing, a city at once an immerging global capital city, and an urban space fraught with competing ways of seeing, those crafted by the state and those of artists. Statecraft in this dissertation is conceptualized as both the art of managing building projects that function to control Beijing’s public spaces, harnessing the thing-power of infrastructure, and the enforcement of everyday rituals that surround Beijinger’s interactions with the city’s infrastructure. From the spectacular architecture built to signify China’s neoliberal approaches to globalized urban spaces, to micro-modifications in how citizens sort their recycling depicted on neighborhood bulletin boards, the visuals of Chinese statecraft saturate the urban landscape of Beijing. I advocate for heterogeneous ways of seeing of infrastructure that releases its from being solely a function of statecraft, to a constitutive part of the artistic practices of: Song Dong (宋冬 b.

By examining Hongyan/Dam Street in the Chinese cultural context with the assistance of analyzing scenes in detail and the film’s visual style, this article argues that the film illustrates the protagonist Xiaoyun is stuck between traditions and modernity, providing a sophisticated insight to an important feminist issue. The reading of the traditions involves chastity code, the image of a rouge face which is the translation of the film’s Chinese title, the Chinese four-character idioms, the time-honoured terms, the development of feminism, and the characteristics of the modernity in China. The perversity of the modernity originates from the social commercialization. Prejudices from the traditions and the modernity leave little space for women to settle in. Keywords: culture, rouge face, traditions, modernity 1. View metadata, citation and similar papers at core.ac.uk brought to you by CORE Absences and Excesses in Cinematic Representations of Beijing Yinghong Li “Reality is a mess in China”–Jia Zhangke Social reality of postsocialist China can only be described in polysemic terms bearing contradictory or at least conflicting connotations. The phantasmagoric na- ture and the immeasurable dimension of this historical condition make it an infinitely challenging object of study for anyone interested in any aspect of contem- porary China.1) The past three decades or so brought drastic changes to China that have fundamentally altered formations of the social structure and the individual’s position and function in this structure, forcing Chinese people to re-orient them- selves in the way they experience the world and interact with each other. The tri- umph of global capitalism at “the end of history” brings China an enormous explo- sion of energy with which the ordinary Chinese have marched forward toward accumulating greater amount of wealth and experiencing greater satisfactions of pleasure. It has also impacted essential moral, ethical standards and thinking hon- ored by conventional wisdom and habit, ushered in different sets of values, beliefs and practices, many of which are potentially more problematic than beneficial. In this paper I would like to examine postsocialist China from two important as- pects, namely the family in disintegration and the workings of the body politics that exploit the weak and encourage the return of many repressed desires of the previous regime. By using cinematic lens as a tool and Beijing as focus, this paper intends to ask pertinent questions regarding how the human subject struggles to re-define the meaning of moral agency and re-negotiate various power relations in order to make sense of a tumultuous and mundane interiority, and an equally devastating exterior formed in sharp contrast between polished, smooth industrial steel and concrete and pathetic, cast-away grey bricks.

9 Searching for Female Sexuality and Negotiating with Feminism Li Yu’s FiLm TriLogY s huqin Cui The hisTory of filmmaking in China does not lack women’s films or female directors. But woman’s cinema—marked by female subjectivity, perspective, and aesthetics—remains ambivalent, a result of the paradox that woman as gendered subject and discursive mode remains subordi- nated to mainstream rhetoric. In the domain of socialist politics, indi- vidual interests yield to national ideologies and class categories overpower gender difference, so the female body recedes behind a collective identity as her screen image becomes a social-political signifier. Works such as Hongse nianzijun (The Red Detachment of Women, 1961) and Baimao nü (The White Haired Girl, 1950) exemplify how class oppression can enslave women but how political ideology can enlighten them and make them vanguards of the proletariat.1 Moreover, the cinematic image is ar- ticulated to ensure that woman’s release from subjugation to emancipa- tion occurs only when gender difference is erased. In post-socialist China, where a market economy drives cultural pro- duction and the mainstream mass media encourage consumption, the female body image is valued for its power of sexual and visual attrac- tion. Under these conditions, women may not need to disguise their gen- der identity to make films, but in a male-dominated and commercially EBSCO Publishing : eBook Collection (EBSCOhost) - printed on 3/25/2020 10:46 AM via QUEEN MARY, UNIVERSITY OF LONDON AN: 584604 ; Wang, Lingzhen.; Chinese Womens Cinema : Transnational Contexts Copyright 2011.
