Her research interest focuses on gender. She has written a monograph on gender con- structions in the Scandinavian Viking Age and several articles on Viking Age mate- rial culture. She also does research in the historiography of archaeology and is about to fi nish a biography on the archaeologist and feminist Hanna Rydh. Stacey Lynn Camp is an assistant professor at the University of Idaho in the Department of Sociology and Anthropology. She is interested in the archaeology of the late nineteenth- and early twentieth-century Western United States. Her current research involves the archaeology of a World War II Japanese American internment camp outside of Kooskia, Idaho. Kim Christensen received her Ph.D. in Anthropology from the University of California, Berkeley. Her research focuses on historical archaeology, reform move- ments, feminist and practice theories, activism, the household, public archaeology, and community research collaboration. Joyce M. Clements is an independent researcher and Adjunct Faculty at Salve Regina University, Newport, Rhode Island. Her research interests include New England historical archaeology and ethnohistory and women’s lives in historical and cross-cultural perspectives. Annie Gray is an honorary research fellow at the University of Liverpool. Her research centers on food and dining in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries, speci fi cally looking at questions of agency, cause and effect. She also works as a consultant on historic food and dining, including the interpretation of sites to the public. She has a keen interest in experimental archaeology, arising from her leader- ship of a team of costumed interpreters working in a Victorian service wing as cooks and kitchen maids. Shannon M. Jackson is an associate professor of anthropology and the anthropology program coordinator at the University of Missouri, Kansas City. She has been con- ducting ethnographic and archival research in South Africa since 1989, focusing on race, embodiment, and Cape Colonial architecture. She continues to write about v vi Author Biographies South Africa as well as teach and conduct research on technology, embodiment, and the built environment. Hadley Kruczek-Aaron (Ph.D., Syracuse University) is an assistant professor of anthropology at the State University of New York at Potsdam. She specializes in the archaeology of religion, reform, and social inequality in the nineteenth century. Her current research project focuses on a mid-nineteenth-century land reform experi- ment that brought hundreds of African Americans to the Adirondack Mountains of New York State. Angela Middleton is a consultant archaeologist and an honorary research fellow in the Department of Anthropology and Archaeology at the University of Otago, New Zealand. Her work in southern and northern New Zealand has led to an explo- ration of the early engagement between Maori (New Zealand’s indigenous people) and Pakeha (European) and to an understanding of early Pakeha settlement. Angela Middleton’s work has been concerned more particularly with an examination of the archaeology of missionization in Aotearoa/New Zealand as well as the international comparative context of missionization. Carol A. Nickolai is an adjunct professor of anthropology and geography at the Community College of Philadelphia. She is interested in changing rural and semi- rural landscapes and in both conformity and resistance to the rules, roles, and rights of women in the nineteenth-century Midwest. Her research has been published in Historical Archaeology and the International Journal of Historical Archaeology. Mary Praetzellis is the associate director at the Anthropological Studies Center, Sonoma State University. She works in cultural resources management and believes that archaeology should contribute to current social and political debates. Mary Praetzellis is a mother to two children; they are her most prized accomplishment and the reason why she feels that early childhood education is so important—past and particularly present. Ieva Reklaityte , B.A., in Archaeology at the University of Vilnius, Lithuania, and Ph.D. (2010) in History, University of Saragossa, Spain. Her publications focus on archaeology of medieval Spain, principally on the urban environment of Al-Andalus. Deb Rotman is the Director of the Center for Undergraduate Scholarly Engagement at the University of Notre Dame. She also teaches in the Department of Anthropology. Her research includes transnational analyses of Irish immigrant experiences to the USA in the nineteenth century. She is particularly interested in how gender articu- lates with other social relations (such as class, ethnicity, and sexuality) and the ways in which those intersections shape lived experience. Suzanne M. Spencer-Wood is a professor in anthropology at Oakland University and an associate at the Peabody Museum of Archaeology and Ethnology at Harvard University. She organized the fi rst two symposia on gender research in historical archaeology at the Chacmool Conference and the Society for Historical Archaeology Author Biographies vii Conference in 1989 and published numerous book chapters and articles in the following journals: Archaeologies, Historical Archaeology, International Journal of Historical Archaeology, Northeast Historical Archaeology, and the Landscape Journal. Anne E. Yentsch received her Ph.D. in anthropology at Brown University, Providence, RI. She received the fi rst James Marston Fitch Award for work on the built environ- ment in 1990 and has written extensively about garden archaeology. She learned about Mina Miller Edison and her intriguing life while writing a history of the landscape at the Edison-Ford Estates in Fort Myers, Florida, in 2001–2002 and expanded this with further research in the Chautauqua archives. The “Art and Mystery of Historical Archaeology: Essays in Honor of James Deetz” was coedited by Yentsch and Mary C. Beaudry, and she is the author of A Chesapeake Family and Their Slaves: a Study in Historical Archaeology. Dr. Yentsch retired from teaching in 2008. Roberts All Rights Reserved ii ABSTRACT In the cities of Richmond, Virginia; Charleston South Carolina; New Orleans, Louisiana; and Baltimore, Maryland, this dissertation endeavors to find out what can be learned about the archaeology(s) of Black memory(s) through Africological Epistemic Visual Storytelling (AEVS); their silences, their hauntings, their wake work, and their healing? This project is concerned with elucidating new African memories and African knowledges that emerge from a two-tier Afrocentric analysis of Eurocentric cartography that problematizes the dual hegemony of the colonial archive of public memory and the colonial map by using an Afrocentric methodology that deploys a Black Digital Humanities research design to create an African agentic ritual archive that counters the colonial one. Additionally, this dissertation explains the importance of understanding the imperial geographic logics inherent in the hegemonically quotidian cartographies of Europe and the United States that sanction white supremacist narratives of memory and suppress spatial imaginations and memories in African communities primarily, but Native American communities as well. It is the hope of the primary researcher that from this project knowledge will be gained about how African people can use knowledge gained from analyzing select monuments/sites of memorialization for the purposes of asserting agency, resisting, and possibly breaking the supposed correctness of the colonial map.

The "inventionof slavery" consisted in the idea that one group of persons can be marked off as an out-group, branded enslaveable, forced into labor and subordination-and that this stigma of enslaveability combined with the reality of their status would make them accept it as a fact. 3 And, further, that such enslavement would not only last for the lifetime of the slave, but that slave status could be permanently affixed to a group of humans, formerly free, and to The Woman Slave their offspring. The crucial invention, over and above that of brutalizing another human being and forcing him or her to labor against their will, is the possibility of designating the group to be dominated as entirely different from the group exerting dominance. Naturally, such a dif­ ference is most obvious when those to be enslaved are members of a foreign tribe, literally "others." Yet in order to extend the concept and make the enslaved into slaves, somehow other than human, men must have known that such a designation would indeed work. We know that mental constructs usually derive from some model in reality HISTORICAL SOURCES ON THE ORIGIN of slavery are sparse, speculative and consist of a new ordering of past experience. That experience, and difficult to evaluate. How were systems of slavery instituted in different medieval societies? How did these systems of slavery differ from each other and the racial slavery system imposed on the Americas by Europeans after 1492? Rationale/Context One of the major turning points in the seventh grade course is the global convergence at the end of the year when the people of the Atlantic World (followed by the Pacific) come into contact, and the Europeans initiate colonization and racial slavery in the Americas. With racism and settler colonialism still major factors in the United States 500 years later, these are important historical events and systems to help students unpack. Students may have some exposure to these systems from their 5th Grade study of Early American History, and from other popular culture, media, and educational resources. However, while slavery existed in many societies before 1492, these systems were very different than the racial slavery that developed in the Americas. Thus, the answer the end of the year question, “Was slavery always racial?” is no. This lesson is designed to provide a basic summary of the racial slave system of the Americas and then offer students evidence from three Medieval slave societies for comparisons. This model can be used to also compare other medieval slave societies not included in this lesson.
