According to previous studies, the northern species, present in Europe and the Mediterranean, form a paraphyletic, basal clade, and the southern species, present in South Africa, form a robust monophyletic group. In this work a molecular phylogenetic analysis from European and from Central and South African Erica species was performed using the chloroplast regions: trnL-trnL-trnF and 5´trnK-matK , as well as the nuclear DNA marker ITS, in order i) to state the monophyly of the northern and southern species, ii) to determine the phylogenetic relationships between the species and contrasting them with previous systematic research studies and iii) to compare the results provided from nuclear data and explore possible evolutionary patterns. All species were monophyletic except for the widely spread E. arborea , and E. manipuliflora . The paraphyly of the northern species was also confirmed, but three taxa from Central East Africa were polyphyletic, suggesting different episodes of colonization of this area. -

Vegetation of Durokoppin and Kodj Kodjin Nature Reserves
II VEGETATION OF DUROKOPPIN AND KODJ KODJIN NATURE RESERVES B.G. MUIR INTRODUCfION Durokoppin Reserve (DR) and Kodj Kodjin Reserve (KKR) both fall within the Avon district of the South-west Botanical Province of Gardner and Bennetts (1956) and the vegetation of the Reserves largely conforms to that generally found throughout this region. Abbreviated vegetation descriptions of DR appear in Appendix 1 and of KKR in Appendix 3. Full descriptions of the vegetation following the format presented in Muir (1977a) have been lodged in the Archives of Western Australian Museum; details are available on request from the Librarian. A description of the road verge connecting DR and KKR is given at the end of Appendix 1. Methodology The vegetation of DR and KKR was mapped at Level 2 of the reliability scale set out in Muir (1977a). Each vegetation formation discernible on the air photographs was examined on the ground; this information was then extrapolated to adjacent formations. Uncleared land contiguous to the Reserves but not included within them was mapped at formation level directly from the photographs (Level 3). Level 2 locations, shown on vegetation Maps 1 and 2 represent 'sample areas' where the vegetation was examined and described using the classifica tion shown in Table 1 and discussed in detail in Muir (1977a). The following prefix numbers of the locations represent basic formation types. 1 woodland formations 5 lithic complexes 2 mallee formations 6 breakaway complexes 3 shrubland formations 7 salt complexes 4 heaths 8 other Level 3 locations are shown on the maps prefixed by: W = woodland formations M = mallee formations The methods used in classifying formations, coding habitat data, preparing plant lists, classifying litter and describing soils are those of Muir (1977a). -

Available at: http://scholarship.claremont.edu/aliso/vol10/iss1/3 ALISO 10(1), 1981 , pp. 19-34 WOOD ANATOMY OF CHLOANTHACEAE (DICRASTYLIDACEAE) Sherwin Carlquist1 Introduction Chloanthaceae, apparently the correct name for a group also termed Di crastylidaceae (Munir 1978), is a familial taxon often used for Australian genera which have been referred to Verbenaceae. The family was erected by Hutchinson (1959). Others have, to be sure, treated the family as a distinct tribe of Verbenaceae, beginning with Bentham and Hooker (1876) . The presence of endosperm in seeds as well as ovule position in Chloan thaceae have been used as criteria for segregating the family from Verben aceae (Munir 1979) . However, the present study adds two important dis tinctions. All species of Chloanthaceae examined to date have successive cambia. Verbenaceae have normal cambia except for Avicennia (Metcalfe and Chalk 1950; Zamski 1979), a genus sometimes recognized as a separate family. Chloanthaceae all prove to have bordered pits on imperforate tra cheary elements of the secondary xylem. These pits are not fully bordered; they are intermediate between fully bordered and vestigially bordered. Thus the elements should be termed fibertracheids. Vestigial borders have been reported on pits of imperforate tracheary elements of Petraea volubilis L. -

Bell heather Erica cinerea Family Ericaceae (heath) Also known as Heath, Scotch heather Where is it originally from? Western Europe What does it look like? Long-lived, low growing (<30 cm), bushy shrub with small needle-like leaves arranged in groups of three around stems. Bell-shaped, mostly purple (sometimes pink or white) flowers (6 mm long, Dec-Feb) produce large amounts of seed in mature plants. Are there any similar species? Calluna vulgaris Photo: Trevor James Why is it weedy? Forms dense mats, suckers and seeds profusely, and is faster growing than its subalpine competitors. Tolerates cold, high to low rainfall, semi-shade, and poor soils, but is intolerant of heavy shade. How does it spread? Mature plants produce large amounts of seeds that are viable for a long time (30-40 years). Seed spread via gravity, wind, animals, ornamental trade. What damage does it do? Adversely impacts environmental values of rocky outcrops, low stature shrub land and tussock communities in the hill and high country by competing with native species such as flax and snow Photo: Trevor James tussock. Loss of production from pastoral agriculture is also a possibility if left uncontrolled in the hill and high country. Has allelopathic properties, especially affecting grasses, and may cause patches of bare soil as a result that are vulnerable to further weed invasion or erosion. Which habitats is it likely to invade? Grows on hillsides, cliffs, dry slopes, sea cliffs heaths, rocky ground, woods, frequently disturbed sites and tussock grassland. Can tolerate acidic, waterlogged soils, has slight salt tolerance and frost resistant. -

Heathers and Heaths Heathers and heaths are easy care evergreen plants that can give year-round garden color. With careful planning, you can have varieties in bloom every month of the year. Foliage colors include shades of green, gray, gold, and bronze; some varieties change color or have colored tips in the winter or spring. Flower colors are white and shades of pink, red, and purple. Heathers make excellent companions to rhododendrons and azaleas. They are also excellent in rock gardens or on slopes. Bees love traditional heaths and heathers; however, the new bud-bloomer Scotch heathers, whose flowers are long-lasting because they don’t open completely, do not provide good bee forage, nor do the new foliage-only series. Choose other varieties if that is a consideration. Heathers grow best in neutral to slightly acid soil with good drainage. A sandy soil mixed with compost or leaf mold is ideal. Heathers bloom best in full or partial sun. Plants will grow in a shady location but will not bloom as well and tend to get leggy. They will not do well in areas of hot reflected sunlight. To plant heather, work compost into the planting area, then dig a hole at least twice the width of the rootball. Partially fill with your amended soil and place the plant at the same level it grew in the container. Excess soil over the rootball will kill the plant. For the same reason, do not mulch too deeply or allow mulch to touch the trunks. Normally a spacing of 12-30” apart is good, depending on the variety. -

All recognized taxa will be clades; adherence to Linnaean ranks is optional. Synonymy is very incomplete (comprehensive synonymy is not a goal of the project, but could be incorporated). Although I anticipate producing a publishable version of this classification at a future date, my near- term goal is to produce a web-accessible version, which will be available to the public and which will be updated regularly through input from systematists familiar with taxa within the Lamiales.
