It also blends together theory and practice, in a new account of Chilean institutional culture validated through real-life consultancy experiences. This venture required significant cooperation from various angles. I thank all persons in Chile who contributed to the fieldwork for this study. We were living in colorado at the time, and we heard about a family of nor - wegian-American sheepherders in Montana who were among the last to trail their band of sheep long distances — about 150 miles each year, all of it on hoof — up to the mountains for summer pasture. i visited the Allestads that April during lambing, and i was so taken with the magnitude of their life — both its allure and its arduousness — that we ended up following them, their friends and their irish-American hired hands intensely over the following years. to the point that they felt like family. Sweetgrass is one of nine films to have emerged from the footage we have shot over the last decade, the only one intended principally for theatrical exhibition. As the films have been shaped through editing, they seem to have become as much about the sheep as about their herders. the humans and animals that populate the footage commingle and crisscross in ways that have taken us by surprise. Sweetgrass depicts the twilight of a defining chapter in the history of the American West, the dying world of Western herders — descendants of scandinavian and northern european homesteaders — as they struggle to make a living in an era increasingly inimical to their interests. set in Big sky country, in a landscape of remarkable scale and beauty, the film portrays a lifeworld colored by an intense propinquity between nature and culture — one that has been integral to the fabric of human existence throughout history, but which is almost unimaginable for the urban masses of today.

Using original documents I gathered in research trips to Chile and Spain, I am able to reconstruct the debates that went on both sides of the Atlantic over funds, protection from ’ th pirates, and indigenous slavery that so defined Chile s formative 17 century. While my conclusions are unique, frontier residents from Paraguay to northern New Spain were also dealing with volatile indigenous alliances, threats from European enemies, and questions about how their tiny settlements could get and keep the attention of the crown.

    The Political Marketplace: Analyzing Political Entrepreneurs and Political Bargaining with a Business Lens Framework and Background Seminar Memo By Alex de Waal World Peace Foundation This memorandum is intended to serve as an introduction to the framework of the “political marketplace,” as background for the seminar. The political marketplace is a contemporary system of governance, characterized by pervasive monetized patronage, in the form of exchange of political loyalty or cooperation for payment. The countries where this occurs share three principal features, namely (a) the dominance of inter-personal political bargaining over formal rules and procedures, (b) pervasive rent-seeking by members of the political and business elite, and (c) integration into a global patronage order. The political marketplace is not a transitional or outdated system that is about to replaced by Weberian states, but a flexible and dynamic governance order. The framework of the political marketplace helps to explain four enduring puzzles in contemporary Africa and the Greater Middle East: 1. State-building is becoming harder, not easier. An earlier generation grasped the prospect of modernity but it now appears to be beyond reach. Despite a collective demand for democracy and capable states, international technical assistance, and remarkable economic growth, institutionalized states seem more remote today than half a century ago. 2. Large-scale killing is declining but volatility is increasing. The numbers of people killed in today’s conflicts are considerably smaller than twenty or thirty years ago. Military coups and wars are rarer. But reduced violence does not seem to translate into greater stability. More effort than ever is invested in peace, and peace agreements are larger and more complicated than ever before, but they seem not to bring peace.

Clayman Institute for Gender Research, Stanford University, 450 Serra Mall, Stanford, CA, 94025-2047, USA *Correspondence: [email protected] Abstract The hedge fund industry is one of the most lucrative and powerful industries in the USA, yet it mostly comprises white men. To understand why, I turn to Weber’s theory of patrimonialism, which primarily has been applied to historical or non- Western societies. I argue that patrimonialism—activated through trust, loyalty and tradition—restricts access to financial rewards and facilitates the reproduction of the white male domination of this industry. Using data from 45 in-depth interviews com- bined with field observations at industry events over a 4-year period, I investigate how hiring, grooming and seeding practices within and among firms enable certain elites to maintain monopolies over financial resources. Applying the theory of patri- monialism to a context with few women and minority men in power-holding posi- tions demonstrates how practices that reproduce elite structures are directly connected to inequality in the workplace.   • The Great Chilean Recovery: Assigning Responsibility for the Chilean Miracle(S)
    ABSTRACT THE GREAT CHILEAN RECOVERY: ASSIGNING RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE CHILEAN MIRACLE(S) September 11, 1973, a day etched in the memory of Chilean history, marked the abrupt end to the socialist government of Salvador Allende, via a military coup led by the General of the Army, Augusto Pinochet. Although condemned by many for what they consider the destruction of Chile’s democratic tradition, the administrative appointments made and decisions taken by Pinochet and his advisors established policies necessary for social changes and reversed economic downward trends, a phenomenon known as the “Chilean Miracle.” Pinochet, with the assistance of his economic advisors, known as the “Chicago Boys,” established Latin America's first neoliberal regime, emphasizing that a free-market, not the government, should regulate the economy. Examining the processes through which Pinochet formed his team of economic advisors, my research focuses on the transformations wrought by the Chicago Boys on the economic landscape of Chile. These changes have assured that twenty-four years after Pinochet’s rule, the Chilean economy remains a model for Latin American nations. In particular, this examination seeks to answer the following question: Who was responsible for the “Chilean Miracle”?
