Aso, an active volcano and beautiful coastal areas. The University is close to the city center: 10 min by bus. The city is a manageable size and you can travel easily by bus and tram, or bicycle. Living costs are lower compared to the bigger cities. Graduate School of Science and Technology (GSST), Kumamoto University has about 1000 graduate students, and more than 150 1-9. Message for Applicants students from about 20 different countries are studying here. We have a program called IJEP where we teach in English. At GSST, we have Global Joint Education Center for Science and Technology (GJEC), which promote international programs and offer lectures in English given by professors invited from overseas universities. Director of International Division of GJEC will be in charge of the program for Afghan participants. Apart from academic programs we offer field trips for international students and social activities to promote exchanges with Japanese students.

2．Features of University

Kumamoto University (KU) is a national university located in the city of Kumamoto in Kyushu, the southern-most main island of Japan. Kumamoto City is the third largest city in Kyushu, having a population of approximately 730,000, known for its abundance of trees and greenery.

The University has its roots in five institutes of higher education established in Kumamoto during the Meiji Era which eventually united to form Kumamoto University. Among these institutes, The Fifth High School was a center for higher learning in western Japan and its main building located on the campus of the KU has been designated as a national treasure of Japan. KU is composed of seven undergraduate faculties, eight graduate schools and thirteen research centers/institutes. As of May 2013, KU is home to 8,075 undergraduate and 2,040 graduate students including 408 international students from 42 countries and the University is dedicated to providing a world-class education and research experience to students from all over the world.

3．Features of Graduate School

In Graduate School of Science and Technology (GSST) we provide educational programs in fields of science and engineering for Master’s and Doctoral courses and conduct advanced research in the state-of-the-art facilities. In the field of New Frontier Sciences, where we especially promote interdisciplinary research, we provide the program on pulsed power engineering supported by GCOE and the groundwater environmental leader program. Global Joint Education Center for Science and Technology (GJEC) of GSST offers intensive lectures in English given by professors invited from overseas universities.

4．Features of the Program and Curriculum in each Field of Study

Master students have to take at least 34 credits. There are 2 classes required for IJEP students: “Current Science and Technology in Japan” (2 credits), “English for Science and Technology” (2 credits). For the remaining 30 credits you will take from the classes offered in the department or the intensive classes in GJEC. Classes in GJEC for the next year have not been determined yet. In addition to the course work you will have to carry out research for dissertation.

6．Facilities

International House International House, the dormitory for International Students is located about 1.5km east of the Main Campus. More than 150 international students and guest scholars reside there. Rooms are fully furnished with furniture and even have small kitchens for making meals.

Japanese Language Program The Center for Globalization offers various kinds of classes about the Japanese language and Japanese studies for international students and researchers in Kumamoto University. Students who want to take Japanese language classes are required to take the orientation and the Japanese Language Placement Test. In order to take Japanese classes, students have to know hiragana. If you have never studied hiragana, please take the “Hiragana Class”. Japanese language ability and classes are categorized into the following 7 levels.

Level 1 = Lower Elementary (For those who have never studied Japanese) Level 2 = Upper Elementary (JPT Level 4 or N5) Level 3 = Lower Intermediate (JPT Level 3 or N4) Level 4 = Upper Intermediate (JPT Level 2 or N3-N2) Level 5 = Lower Advanced (JPT Level 1 or N1) Level 6 = Upper Advanced (JPT Level 1 or N1) Level７= Those who have passed the JLPT Level 1 or N1 with a high score and do not need to take Japanese classes. ＊JLPT= the Japanese Proficiency Test

Cultural Tour A field trip for international students is carried out once a year in February. Field trips are overnight trip by bus that will go to some historical sites and provide opportunities to experience Japanese culture.
