I appreciate also, so much, my family’s interest and encouragement, without which I would not have had this opportunity. i Abstract This thesis investigates embedded databases and graphical interfaces for the MicroBaseJ project. The project aim is the development of an integrated database and GUI user interface for a typical 3G, or 2.5G, mobile phone with Java MIDP2 capability. This includes methods for data acquisition, mobile data and information communication, data management, and remote user interface. Support of phone delivered informatics will require integrated server and networking infrastructure research and development to support effective and timely delivery of data for incorporation in mobile device-based informatics applications. A key research and development (R&D) challenge is to support effective and timely delivery of data for incorporation in mobile device-based informatics applications. Another important aspect of the project is determining how to develop efficient graphics for the small mobile screen. The research investigates and analyses the architecture of a mobile monitoring system. The project developed a generic solution that can be implemented in a number of commercial sectors, such as horticulture, building management and pollution/water management. The developed concept is tested using data relevant to the horticultural area of application. The system also addresses the main issues related to mobile monitoring, including realtime response, data integrity, solution cost, graphical presentation, and persistent storage capabilities of modern mobile devices. Four embedded databases based on J2ME have been investigated. Two of the four have been evaluated and analysed. The Insert function, Sequence Search, and Random Search of Perst List and RMS (Record Management System) databases have been tested. The size of the processed data was limited to 20,000 records when using the wireless toolkit simulator, and 11,000 records when using a mobile phone. Perst Lite reflects good performance and has out-performed RMS in all tests. User interface software such as J2ME Polish for mobile phones has been investigated. Custom J2ME class for graphical interface is developed. This provides the graphical presentation of the data collected from the sensors; including temperature, wind speed, ii wind direction, moisture, and leaf wetness. The graphical interface, bar charts, and line charts with trace ball for collected data have been designed and implemented. The embedded database performance and project performance have been investigated and analysed. The performances of Perst Lite and RMS are evaluated in terms of the insert, sequence search, and random search functions based on simulation and real devices. The record numbers vary from 1,000 to 20,000. The project performance contains data receiving and storage, and data presentation and configuration. The performance of data storage and configuration can be negated due to the running mode and the response time. Thus, data presenting performance is the key focus in this project. This performance was divided into the categories of initial, data search, data selection, and charting. The initial performance includes the initialisation of the project parameters, and the reaching of the welcome interface. Data search performance refers to the retrieval of the specified data from the embedded database, measured on 48 data points, which only can be presented on the mobile screen from the retrieved data. These four performance types are measured in thousands of record numbers, varying from 1,000 to 18,000 record numbers, with the retrieved data range varying from 1 day to 30 days. iii Table of Common Lisp was the first ANSI standardized Lisp dialect [13] and Common Lisp Object System (CLOS) was probably the first ANSI stan- dardized object oriented programming language [14]. Apart from its outstand- ing features as a Common Lisp subset. Various Lisps were used in artificial intelligence [11] and to some extent the language comes from AI labs and its ecosystem. Common Lisp was used as the language of choice by some AI tutors, like Peter Norvig (in [10]). But the whole family of languages address general problems in computer science, not only these in AI. John Backus argues [3] that the functional style is a real liberation from the traditional imperative languages and their problems.

    A Variability-Aware Module System Christian Kästner, Klaus Ostermann, and Sebastian Erdweg Philipps University Marburg, Germany Module systems enable a divide and conquer strategy to software develop- ment. To implement compile-time variability in software product lines, mod- ules can be composed in different combinations. However, this way variability dictates a dominant decomposition. Instead, we introduce a variability-aware module system that supports compile-time variability inside a module and its interface. This way, each module can be considered a product line that can be type checked in isolation. Variability can crosscut multiple modules. The module system breaks with the antimodular tradition of a global variabil- ity model in product-line development and provides a path toward software ecosystems and product lines of product lines developed in an open fashion. We discuss the design and implementation of such a module system on a core calculus and provide an implementation for C, which we use to type check the open source product line Busybox with 811 compile-time options. 1 Introduction A module system allows developers to decompose a large system into manageable sub- systems, which can be developed and checked in isolation [13]. A module hides informa- tion about internal implementations and exports only a well-defined and often machine- enforced interface. This enables an open-world development style, in which software can be composed from modular self-contained parts. The need for compile-time variability, for example in software product lines [6, 17, 10], challenges existing module systems. To tailor a software system, stakeholders may want to select from compile-time configuration options (or features) and derive a specific configuration (or variant, or product) of the system.

We can say mobile de- vices are sibling of personal computers. Mobile device usage patterns are very different as compared to conventional PCs, as the devices are targeted for general users. Mobile devices have some great features, e.g., light weight and efficiency, but it has some drawback like small memory and battery is- sues. Peoples want to use many applications, due to growing the number of purposes, but it challenges to manage the many application in mobile device. Performance of mobile device depends on how to managing our applications and its data. There is a need to measure the performance of various com- monly used applications. Our work start with simple question: does storage affect the performance of mobile device? What kinds of database requires for mobile device? What are the parameter to measure the performance of databases? How to measure the performance of mobile device and its possible tools.
