His unique, story-driven approach to the craft of film scoring has seen him work on some of the most innovative productions of recent years. From Alfonso Cuaron’s Gravity to Edgar Wright’s Baby Driver, Steven’s individualistic scores seek to enhance the ideas and images of great filmmakers in truly bespoke ways. Steven’s diverse music reflects the wide range of movie and television projects he has been involved with. Beginning his career in the late 1990s, he contributed to productions such as The Lord of the Rings trilogy and Batman Begins, before making his scoring debut in 2011 with Joe Cornish’s inner-city horror comedy, Attack the Block. Recent years have seen him compose distinctive scores for Claire McCarthy’s reimagining of Hamlet, Ophelia, David Ayer’s Suicide Squad, and the Paramount Animation Wonder Park. From his incorporation of original WW2 tanks in the percussion of the Brad Pitt starring Fury to the wind instrument driven score created for Tom Harper’s The Aeronauts, the music created for each production seeks to give each story its unique voice, the result of an experimental and collaborative process. His work in the Natural History realm, working alongside Sir David Attenborough on The Hunt, (for which Steven won a Bafta), and the Netflix Original Our Planet, (nominated for two score Emmys), will continue in 2020 with a new live arena spectacular, Our Planet Live in Concert, the premiere for which will be held at London’s O2 Arena in October 2020.

  • Movie Review: ‘Suicide Squad”
Movie Review: ‘Suicide Squad” By John Mulderig Catholic News Service NEW YORK — Initially stylish but ultimately ridiculous and chaotic, the DC comics- based adventure “Suicide Squad” (Warner Bros.) also features some dubious moral values. Add to that the film’s lurid atmosphere overall and its appeal, along with its appropriate audience, dwindles still further. If there’s any good news to be salvaged from this mess, it’s that casting Viola Davis as a tough-as-nails government bureaucrat works quite well. Davis plays hard-bitten intelligence agent Amanda Waller. Waller’s pet project is the creation of the combat team of the title, an ensemble of violent villains she’s determined to spring from prison and put at the service of the government. The leading figures in this dirty half-dozen are skilled assassin Floyd Lawton (Will Smith), aka Deadshot, and psychiatrist-turned-psychopath Harley Quinn (Margot Robbie), or Dr. Harleen Quinzel in her old job. Together with Australian killer Boomerang (Jai Courtney), arsonist Diablo (Jay Hernandez), skin disease-afflicted brute Killer Croc (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje) and escape artist Slipknot (Adam Beach), Deadshot and Quinn find themselves placed under the command of the military’s leading special ops warrior, Col. Rick Flag (Joel Kinnaman), and compelled to do Waller’s bidding. Their first mission is to take on an evil specter whose campaign of destruction has forced the evacuation of an entire city. Whence this malignant spirit? Well, it seems that archaeologist June Moone (Cara Delevingne), Flag’s true love, got more than she bargained for when she went barging into an Aztec temple one day.

Before the emergence of online streaming platforms such as Amazon Prime, Hulu, YouTube, and Netflix, audiences were not able to play, pause, and change contents as they wished. Although this is not to say that the programming choices for television and theaters were not reflective of audiences’ demands back then, it’s true that online steaming platforms have put the power back in the hands of the viewer by giving them the ability to watch what they want, when they want to watch it. According to online community platform for media, entertainment, and technology IBC365, “Netflix rarely releases data about its content but recently broke cover to claim that 45 million accounts, nearly a third of its total, had streamed the Sandra Bullock thriller (and Netflix original) Bird Box (2018) in its first week on the platform (Pennington, 2019)”. The film and television industries all over the world, most of all Hollywood, are being forced to change their business models to compete. After all, this is the year when box office revenues for movies are predicted to be overtaken by over-the-top (OTT) revenues for the first time according to analyst firm Ampere Analysis (Pennington, 2019). Steven Spielberg has recently made a controversial comment on how online streaming platform-produced films that do not screen in theaters for ninety days should have no place at the Oscars.

  • Training Day and the Shield: Evil Cops and the Taint of Blackness
Training Day and The Shield: Evil Cops and the Taint of Blackness Robin R. Means Coleman and Jasmine Nicole Cobb Abstract The police detectives of Hollywood’s Training Day (2001) and cable television’s The Shield (2002-), Alonzo Harris and Vic Mackey, represent the newest face of evil in entertainment media. Harris and Mackey are menacing, rough cops who rule their urban beats like the street gangs and criminals who co-exist in the same cement terrain. Train- ing Day and The Shield utilise a discourse that emphasises racial signifiers and class positioning to portray a social environment that justifies the presence of such troublesome policing. Through a critical, cultural analy- sis of these figures, we explore these sociopolitical themes while expound- ing upon definitions of evil that begin with describing a war between light and dark, black and white. Our analysis is informed by James McDaniel, St. Augustine, and Nietzsche’s definitions of evil. We argue that, by defi- nition, only the Alonzo Harris characterisation, portrayed by a Black body, in contrast with that of a white Vic Mackey, can be considered truly evil in nature by virtue of his undivided emersion in the “dark” - morally and racially. Key Words: African Americans, Augustine, ethnicity, F. Nietzsche, po- lice, race, The Shield, stereotyping, Training Day, whiteness 1. Introduction Racial images in the mass media are infused with color-coded positive and negative moralistic features. -Jannette L. Dates and Wil- liam Barlow1 The dawn of the twenty-first century brings with it a new face of evil in entertainment media. This evil comes in the form of a breed of po- lice detectives who are highly corrupted, often motivated by greed rather than by a sense of justice, and murderous.
