  • Dervish on the Eurovision Stage Popular Music and the Heterogeneity of Power Interests in Contemporary Turkey
Dervish on the Eurovision Stage Popular Music and the Heterogeneity of Power Interests in Contemporary Turkey Nevin Şahin Turkey’s journey of the Eurovision Song Contest (ESC), dominated by national- istic identity claims, started in 1975, culminated in the country’s victory in 2003, and abruptly came to an end in 2012 in Baku. Turkey’s four decades of ESC participation illuminated conflicting power interests from the selection process of the songs to the decision process of the stage performances. The debates peaked in the 2004 final ESC night in İstanbul regarding the representation of whirling dervishes. Different stakeholders, including the tourist industry, the national broadcast channel Türkiye Radyo ve Televizyon Kurumu (TRT), the Ministry of Culture and Tourism, Sufi circles, and the singer and winner of the 2003 ESC Sertab Erener, influenced the participation of whirling dervishes in the 2004 round of the ESC. In doing so, they created a web of contesting power dynamics, which can be theorized in the context of public diplomacy. Historian Jessica Gienow-Hecht emphasizes the heterogeneity in the struc- ture of agency in cultural diplomacy (10). In a parallel manner, this chapter argues that there are heterogeneous power interests of different agents in the context of popular music and diplomacy in Turkey. How does the performance of “Turkishness,” emblematized by whirling dervishes on the ESC stage, reflect the competition and collaboration of actors in the cultural domain? In an effort to highlight power dynamics behind Turkey’s ESC performance, this chapter first focuses on Turkey’s ESC history. It then moves towards the competitive staging of whirling dervishes in other public events, followed by a Bourdieusian analysis of power and music diplomacy.

The question, however, remains as to what extent this report- ed scepticism truly reflects people’s opinions and feelings about Europe. We all consider it normal to cross borders within Europe, often while using the same money, as well as to take part in exchange programmes, invest in enterprises across Europe and appeal to European institutions if national regulations, for example, do not meet our expectations.

  • For the Homeland: Transnational Diasporic Nationalism and the Eurovision Song Contest
FOR THE HOMELAND: TRANSNATIONAL DIASPORIC NATIONALISM AND THE EUROVISION SONG CONTEST SLAVIŠA MIJATOVIĆ A THESIS SUBMITTED TO THE FACULTY OF GRADUATE STUDES IN PARTIAL FULFILLMENT OF THE REQUIREMENTS FOR THE DEGREE OF MASTER OF ARTS GRADUATE PROGRAM IN GEOGRAPHY YORK UNIVERSITY TORONTO, CANADA December 2014 © Slaviša Mijatović, 2014 Abstract This project examines the extent to which the Eurovision Song Contest can effectively perpetuate discourses of national identity and belonging for diasporic communities. This is done through a detailed performance analysis of former Yugoslav countries’ participations in the contest, along with in-depth interviews with diasporic people from the former Yugoslavia in Malmö, Sweden. The analysis of national symbolism in the performances shows how national representations can be useful for the promotion of the state in a reputational sense, while engaging a short-term sense of national pride and nationalism for the audiences. More importantly, the interviews with the former Yugoslav diaspora affirm Eurovision’s capacity for the long-term promotion of the ‘idea of Europe’ and European diversities as an asset, in spite of the history of conflict within the Yugoslav communities. This makes the contest especially relevant in a time of rising right-wing ideologies based on nationalism, xenophobia and racism. Key words: diaspora, former Yugoslavia, Eurovision Song Contest, music, nationalism, Sweden, transnationalism ii Acknowledgements Any project is fundamentally a piece of team work and my project has been no different. I would like to thank a number of people and organisations for their faith in me and the support they have given me: William Jenkins, my supervisor. For his guidance and support over the past two years, and pushing me to follow my desired research and never settling for less.

Fifty-four years after Germany played host to the second ever Eurovision Song Contest, the musical jamboree comes to Düsseldorf this May. It’s a very different world since ARD staged the show in 1957 with just 10 nations in a small TV studio in Frankfurt. This year, a record 43 countries will take part in the three shows, with a potential audience of 35,000 live in the Esprit Arena. All 10 nations from 1957 will be on show in Germany, but only two of their languages survive. The creaky phone lines that provided the results from the 100 judges have been superseded by state of the art, pan-continental technology that involves all the 125 million viewers watching at home. It’s a very different show indeed. Back in 1957, Lys Assia attempted to defend her Eurovision crown and this year Germany’s Lena will become the third artist taking a crack at the same challenge.

  • The Eurovision Song Contest Ecenur Güvendik*
Etnomüzikoloji Dergisi Ethnomusicology Journal Yıl/Year: 3 • Sayı/Issue: 1 (2020) Music in Political Culture: The Eurovision Song Contest Ecenur Güvendik* Abstract The Eurovision song contest of May 2020 has been cancelled in the global wake of the coronavirus epidemic. The song contest was first established in 1956 and has broadcasting annually every year. This was the first time of its’ cancelation within 64 years of history. Obviously, it is a necessary pro- tection both for musicians and the organizers of the Eurovision, and its’s audience – as Eurovision has a strong history of uniting global nations. In case of uniting different nations, this contest directly affected from political relations of countries. This article aims to explore how this contest affected from countries’ political culture, what kind of behaviour media institutions owned according to this issue and whether the quality of music really mat- tered in a song contest – in three parts. First part will focus on politics, second one is about mass media and last one is about musical quality. Eu- rovision song contest first appeared after a huge political event (which is World War II), so it directly gives us a chance to observe political relations between European and Eastern countries. This article will mention coun- tries’ strategic voting system (voting blocs) as an example for results of po- litical relations and behaviour of media is also important. Generally, media instruments used for the benefits of countries’ governments and the atti- tude of international media institutions also plays great role. Lastly, the quality and the presentation of music issue; it is strange to observe that counties pick new and unexperienced music groups/singers rather than well-known and experienced ones as a contestant for themselves.

  • Linguistic and Cultural Changes Throughout the History of the Eurovision Song Contest
Linguistic and cultural changes throughout the history of the Eurovision Song Contest Trabajo de Fin de Grado Lenguas Modernas y Traducción Facultad de Filosofía y Letras Written by: Sergio Lucas Rojo Tutored by: Irina Ursachi July 2020 Abstract This paper aims to clarify some of the linguistic problems that have arisen in recent years at the Eurovision Song Contest, one of the most important music events in the world. Through an exhaustive bibliographic review and the individual analysis of a large number of entries, it is concluded that linguistic diversity, an identifying feature of the show in the past, has been reduced by establishing a rule that does not oblige artists to sing in the language of the country they represent. English has taken over the reins of this annual competition, although there is still room for the traditional and the ethnic. The research that has been carried out is intended to serve as a reference for all Eurovision followers who wish to expand their knowledge. It also attempts to clarify concepts such as “linguistic diversity”, “identity” and “culture”, which can be extrapolated to other fields of knowledge. It must be noted that not only have linguistic issues been dealt with, but there are references to all the factors involved in the contest. However, it is those phenomena related to languages that form the backbone of the work. Key words: Eurovision Song Contest, languages, culture, identity, Europe, music. Resumen Este trabajo responde a la necesidad de aclarar algunos problemas lingüísticos que han surgido en los últimos años en el Festival de Eurovisión, uno de los eventos musicales más importantes del mundo.
