Today is the Fi eenth Sunday in Ordinary Time The readings for today can be found at hp://www.usccb.org/bible/readings/071220.cfm

For useful background and acvies to beer understand the readings, go to bit.ly/38vr7vP and bit.ly/2ZMbE6q

Do you know the difference between hearing and listening? Sometimes we might hear somebody talking to us, but we are not really listening. Maybe we are distracted, or maybe our hearts are not open to hearing or responding to what the other person is saying. It is just like this when we hear the message of Jesus too. Is your heart open to hearing the word of God today? Today’s gospel is a parable about the Kingdom. The 'Kingdom' is a key theme throughout Matthew's gospel. Jesus told stories using images and objects that were familiar to the people - in this case it was the planting of seeds. The seeds represent Jesus' message and the soil represents how different people respond to or listen to Jesus' message. Talk together about the ways your family practices your faith (daily prayer, going to Sunday Mass, caring for others, etc.). Remind one another that you do these things as a family so that God’s Word can take root in your lives and God’s love will show in your actions, thoughts, and words. God wants us to be the ‘good soil’ that God’s Word grows in so it can be shared with others. Source: excerpted from www.stkevinsparish.org.au

Saint of the Week Saint Kateri Tekakwitha Feast Day: July 14th Bio: St. Kateri Tekakwitha is the first Native American saint! She was born to the Mo- hawk clan in 1656, and her early life was not easy. She lost her parents, her little brother, and half of her sight to a smallpox outbreak when she was four. Around this time, Jesuit missionaries were allowed to enter Mohawk communities. While her uncle hated them, Kateri was moved by their words. She eventually converted and was bap- tized, resigning herself to a life of slavery in her community. She was convinced by a priest friend to run away to a town near Montreal, where she took a vow of virginity. She often fasted for the conversion of the Mohawk nation. When she died at the age of 34, it is said that her emaciated face gained the color of a healthy child, and even the smallpox scars faded away. St. Kateri, pray for us!

Apologetics 101: When It’s Hard To Forgive

Forgiving someone is one of the hardest things we can do in life. And it also brings the most peace. This week, we explore some praccal ways to help us forgive. Forgiveness doesn’t mean accepng abuse or pretending what was done to you was OK. - Forgiving someone doesn’t mean you are weak. It actually means you are strong enough to not let them define who you are. Forgiveness is a process, not an event. If we do not forgive someone, it does not hurt them; it hurts us. - Withholding forgiveness causes all the negavity and resentment to fester inside us; forgiving them re- leases all of that from us. Forgiveness doesn’t mean that there are no consequences for the behavior that was done to us, it means that we aren’t the ones responsible for delivering the jusce. - “‘Vengeance is mine,’ says the Lord, ‘I will repay.’” (Deuteronomy 32:35) * Noce God doesn’t say, “there will be no vengeance”; rather, there is vengeance but He will be the one to take care of it. Forgiveness is required of us. Jesus says clearly that if we do not forgive others, the Father will not forgive us. - “Forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us…” * Noce the “as”; it’s like an equal sign that says ‘Lord, forgive me only to the extent that I forgive others.’ If you struggle to forgive, meditate on the Crucifixion of Jesus. When the soldiers were pounding nails through His body, what does He say? - “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do…” * He not only forgives them, He offers an excuse to the Father for them!

Council Chancellor Charles Farley Peculiar to the Knights is the role of Chancellor, sort of third in command and ably filled by a gentleman you may recognize if you study his picture for a while. Charles has been a parishioner of St Bridget Parish since 1968 when he married his lovely wife Linda (Simoneau) while serving in the US Army. Officiating at their wedding was Fr Hanley, first Pastor of St Bridget, and Fr Torpy, founding Pastor of The Church of the Epiphany (their eventual Parish, Linda being the first Parish Secretary). Charles has a de- gree in Chemistry from SCSU and a degree in programming as well, having retired as a Programmer/Systems Analyst at NASDAQ . Recognize his picture? Charles was a daytime TV announcer for the Conn Lottery for five years driving some of us to tears and for some others making their day (week? month? life?). Charles joined our Council about the time of the tragic passing of Linda in 2011. We should all bounce back as well after such a loss. He has become a Fourth Degree Knight and was Corps Commander of the Color Guard until last year.

Next week we will have our final installment of introductions with a blend of new faces and old. See you then!
