This report summarises information and issues relating to the utilisation, assessment and management of shared fish stocks in the Bay of Bengal region. The report was carried out as a desk study and is based primarily on published documents and information that is in the public domain, national reports produced under the BOBLME programme, personal communications from specialists in the BOB region and elsewhere, and the author’s own personal observations. 2. A number of problem areas are identified, as follows: • overfishing. There is excess fishing capacity in many of the region’s coastal fishery stocks, which is reducing productivity and threatening long-term sustainability; • destructive fishing of various kinds is commonplace, and may be worsening in some areas. Destructive forms of fishing include use of dynamite and toxins to capture fish, net fishing for prawn larvae which destroys the larvae of other species, live coral mining, and bottom trawling which causes habitat alteration; • fishery monitoring, control and surveillance arrangements are inadequate, giving rise to problems of unauthorised fishing, user conflict, and a general failure of centralised fishery management arrangements; • pollution and unmanaged coastal development have widespread and sometimes severe negative impacts on fish stocks; • processes for ensuring that stock assessment data are integrated into the fisheries management decision-making process are under-developed; • there is an unrealistic expectation that stock assessment can provide robust, highly reliable measurements, rather than estimates; • despite most fishery resources being shared among two or more countries, there are few bilateral or multilateral attempts to assess and manage stocks; • fishery statistics

Studies on spawning periodicity indicated that this species spawned only once in a year over a prolonged period extending from January to April with a peak during March to April. Analysis of size at first maturity of D. acuta using cumulative frequency method showed that male and female attained first maturity between 16-18cm in total length. Male always recorded lower gonado-somatic index (GSI) values than female due to higher ovary weight compared to testis. The GSI values of female were high during January to April with peaks in March and April. The fecundity of fish ranged from 12,642 to 34,782 eggs with an average of 21796 eggs. Log linear relationship was established between fecundity and gonad weight. The sex ratio of male to female was 1:0.74. There was an overall male predominance in the population. The size of males ranged from 107 to 203 mm and weighed between 9.63 to 67.61g, while of females, ranged from 109 to 208 mm in length and 7.98 to 66.45g in weight. Among the compared characters, coefficient of correlation (r) was highest for total length against standard length (0.9597) and lowest for head length against body depth (0.7422). Based on the present investigation on meristic characters, the fin formula can be written as B5-6 D14-18 P12-16 V8-9 A12-16 C20-26. The length-weight relationship was established as W= 0.000001609 L3.3209 for male, W=0 .000001517 L3.3378 for female and W= 0.000001474 L3.3408 for pooled, indicating positive allometric relationship. However, condition factor suggested the species to be in average condition throughout the year in both sexes except the month of May. The current work presents a comprehensive checklist of the Omani fish species. The different fish samples have been collected since the establishment of the Department of Marine Science and Fisheries (MSAF) in 1986. The fish samples identified by the MSAF were compared with the most recent published book on the Coastal Fishes of Oman. The number of Omani fishes (from both fresh water and sea water) totalled 1179, distributed in 527 genera, 165 families and 37 orders. Under the Chondrichtyes, the most diverse family was Carcharhinidae with a total of 25 species and 8 genera. The Carcharhinidae species comprised 27% of the total species identified under the Chondriichtyes. The second most diverse family was the dasyatidae with 10 species (11%) and 5 genera. Under the Ostiecthyes, the most diverse three families were the gobiidea with 37 genera and 69 species, the labridae with 26 genera and 63 species, and finally the carangidea with 20 genera and 54 species. Oman has a 3165 km long coastline with an exclusive economic zone area of 300,000 km2.

PANIGRAHY* Department of Marine Sciences, Berhampur University, Berhampur 760 007 INTRODUCTION Gopalpur (19° 16'N and 84~ 55'E), Ganjam (22° 22'N and 85° 02'E) and Patisonapur (18° 4'N and 84°· 25'S) are the main marine fish landing centres in Ganjam district of Orissa state. The fish fauna at these three centres usually comprise the marine and estuarine species which were caught from the Bay of Bengal, a pocket lagoon situated to the north-eastern side of Gopalpur and the two prominant estuarine systems, the Rushikulya and Bahuda river estuaries. Information concerning the systematics of fish fauna from this region are quite scanty. Only Misra (1981) has published a preliminary account on the fish fauna of this region based ·on his collections made from Berhampur fish market. The present communication reports, the systematics of marine and estuarine fishes of South Orissa coast as an additional information to the above publication. Fish specimens were collected at monthly interval from three locations mentioned supra above spreading over a period of one year from March 1988 to February 1989. Each specimen was examined thoroughly and identified following standard literature (Day, 1978; Misra, 1962; Weber and Beaufort, .1933; F.A.O. Fish Identification Mannual, 1974; Munro, 1982). The systematics arrangement was made as per the classification given by Berg (1940). The English name and local name in Oriya was quoted following the Indian Standard Glossary (1974).
