FUSIONpresents and the Surrey Board of Trade continue to lead the way in bringing more quality music to Surrey through our Surrey Music City initiative, helping develop Surrey’s growing music economy and community! We continue to meet with various Surrey arts organizations, as well as artists, promoters, venues and representatives from the City of Surrey, and are developing strategies and programs to facilitate and encourage an increase in live music entertainment in the City. If you’re interested in getting involved, please contact us and let’s set up a meeting at our SBOT Office. Live music continues strong at the Sheraton Vancouver Guildford Hotel in Surrey in the MIXT Lounge! With the great weather and longer days coming up, we’ve moved our music a little later on, starting at 7pm and ending at 11pm on both Friday and Saturday. BC’s top jazz talent perform on Fridays and established and up & coming contemporary artists entertain the crowds on Saturdays. FP NEWSLETTER BC ARTIST HIGHLIGHT : BRUCE’S CORNER RANJ SINGH by Bruce Connick I am constantly trying to wrap my head around how quickly technology has changed everything. Gone are the days that we buy CD’s or albums. Now it’s all about streaming. A stereo system is now virtually a waste of space. Now we buy portable sound systems that provide pretty good sound, I must say, and stream. Last year, I joined the tech race and bought myself a portable Bose sound system and started streaming. I signed onto Spotify and then tried to decide what to listen to first. Quite a big decision, it turned out. In the end, I went with Mark Knopfler. And whenever I listen to that Bose speaker invariably it is Mark Knopfler who I start with. Although Sultans of Swing was the first introduction, and remains the go to song for most people when talking about the Dire Straits, it was their third album, Making Movies, that closed the deal for me. And then, of course, Brothers in Arms, became the soundtrack for my 1985. I saw Dire Straits on their tour supporting this album and it still rates as one of my favourites. At the end of the show the crew started breaking down the stage until it was just Knopfler Ranjit “Ranj” Singh makes music with a distinct Indian- playing the guitar. Rolling Stone rated Mark Knopfler at #27 in Western flair that draws on the singer-songwriter and self-taught guitarist’s love for rock music and heartfelt the top 100 guitarists, but I have always thought that was too lyrics. He refers to his unique blend of music as “Indo- low. Canadian Folk”. The Dire Straits catalogue is only a small part of who Mark Knopfler is. The album delivered thoughtful lyrics and music that were inspired by Ranj’s life and his legendary mentors, Neil Young and the late Indian ghazal singer Jagjit Singh. More recently Ranj has returned to music as a solo artist, following his recovery from a serious vehicle collision. He’s stronger than ever and happy to be pursuing his passion for music again, often collaborating with former band members and other SULTANS OF SWING talented musicians to meet the needs of a given venue, event, or project. DIRE STRAITS In 2015 Ranj released his third album, the acoustic The Man Cold featuring his signature melodies and distinctive “up-stroke” riffs from his 12-string guitar. Drengsgaard Many consider him one of the greatest guitar slingers in the world. Others think that his songs are best used as sleeping pills. The British musician Mark Knopfler has a tendency to make people dis- agree. He has done that ever since he entered the international music scene with a red Fender guitar around his neck more than 25 years ago and started creating a name for himself. What Knopfler’s fans especially admire him for is his elegant fingerpicking technique and his melancholy, personal songs that he sings with his subdued, hoarse voice. In the general public he is probably most well-known as the frontman of Dire Straits, one of the world's biggest rock groups up through the 1980s. Mark Knopfler was born in Glasgow, Scotland, in 1949. Later, the family moved to northern England, where Knopfler studied to become a journalist and later an English teacher. Although he did use both his educations professionally, the guitar appealed more to the young Knopfler. As a teenager, he fell in love with the instrument and managed to save up £50 for his first electric guitar. From the mid-1960s he played in various local groups in Leeds, and in 1973 he went to London to try his luck as a rock musician. Here his guitar was heard in various contexts, but without great success. In 1977 he moved into a flat with his brother David, who also played guitar, and the bassist John Illsley.

Teacher Mark Knopfler (guitar/vocals, born 12 August 1949), his younger brother, social worker David Knopfler (guitar- they were born in Glasgow and grew up in Newcastle) and sociology student John Illsley (bass, born 24 June 1949) are sharing a flat in Deptford, South London. Vaig tenir la gran sort de poder-los veure quan només faltaven cinc concert abans d'acabar la trajectòria de Dire Straits. Es el de la foto de l'entrada (abans si que feien entrades com Déu mana), que va en portada d'aquest article. Un 2 d'octubre de 1992 al Palau Sant Jordi. Només els hi quedaven els dies 3 i 4 també al Sant Jordi, 6 i 7 a la Plaça de Toros de Las Ventas de Madrid, i el 9 a La Romareda de Saragossa per posar punt i final a Dire Straits. Es publicaria el directe d'aquesta gira, On The Night (1993) i al 1995 la banda anunciava la seva dissolució. Son d'aquelles coses que et passen a la vida que sense saber-ho acaben transcendint a gairebé fet històric.
