Ted Larson Ezekiel 47:2 Journey Down the River 1 4a Again he measured a thousand and led me through the water, water reaching the knees. Ted Larson Ezekiel 47:4 Journey Down the River 2 4b Again he measured a thousand and led me through the water, water reaching the loins. Ted Larson Ezekiel 47:2 Journey Down the River 3 5 Again he measured a thousand; and it was a river that I could not ford, for the water had risen, enough water to swim in, a river that could not be forded. Ted Larson Ezekiel 47:5 Journey Down the River 4 6b Then he brought me back to the bank of the river. 7 Now when I had returned, behold, on the bank of the river there were very many trees on the one side and on the other. Ted Larson Ezekiel 47:7 The Healing River 8 Then he said to me, “These waters go out toward the eastern region and go down into the Arabah; then they go toward the sea [the Dead Sea], being made to flow into the sea, and the waters of the sea become fresh. 9 It will come about that every living creature http://www.youramazingplaces.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/03/Dead-Sea-11.jpg which swarms in every place where the river goes, will live. And there will be very many fish, for these waters go there and the others become fresh; so everything will live where the river goes. 10 And it will come about that fishermen will stand beside it; from Engedi to Eneglaim there will be a place for the spreading of nets. Their fish will be according to their kinds, like the fish of the Great Sea, very many. 11 But its swamps and marshes will not become fresh; they will be left for salt. http://www.postonline.co.uk/IMG/383/212383/post-fisherman-net.JPG 12 By the river on its bank, on one side and on the other, will grow all kinds of trees for food. Their leaves will not wither and their fruit will not fail. They will bear every month because their water flows from the sanctuary, and their fruit will be for food and their leaves for healing.” Ted Larson Ezekiel 47:12 Fruit Trees Along the River Bank Interpreting the “Fulfillment” of OT Prophecy 1) How does the inaugurating of the New Covenant in Jesus relate to the OT Covenants? --How many covenants are functioning since the 1st Coming of Jesus? Single Covenant Church Dual Covenant Church & Jewish people 2) What type of fulfillment will occur? Singular (at one point in history) Composite (“telescoping” / Interwovenly describes several events) Multiple (Speaks of several distinct events) Not Predicted, but Theologically Analogous 3) Must Prophecies be fulfilled in a Physical manner, or can they be fulfilled in a Spiritual Manner 4) How does the New Testament speak about those Prophecies? To What Historical Events are these “Restoration Prophecies” referring? Jesus’ 1st Coming Modern Israel & ► Spiritual Fulfillment: 1948 ● Temple = Christ End Times Events & Body of Christ ► Physical Fulfillment: (See Ephesians 2:21-22) ● River = Spirit of God ● Temple will be rebuilt ● Literal River (See John 7:37-39) Return from Babylonian Exile ►Physical Fulfillment: ●Temple was rebuilt (520-516 B.C.) ► Spiritual Fulfillment: ● River = Metaphor of God’s Renewing Presence (See Pss 36:8-9; 46:4) Earthly Physical Fulfilment ►the OT prophetic language is understood as describing something that will be literally fulfilled in a concrete and physical way e.g., Temple = literal Temple river = real river Spiritual (non-Physical) Fulfillment • OT prophecy uses concrete, physically descriptive language to metaphorically describe a reality that is fulfilled in a spiritual / theological way e.g., Temple = Christ / Church river = outflowing of Spirit from Christ / Church Physical or Spiritual Fulfillment ■ Issue is NOT that of ACTUAL (Real) Fulfillment vs. Lack of Fulfillment ● Fulfillment in a Spiritual way is just as real (just as much a fulfillment) as a fulfillment in the Physical realm Interpreting the “Fulfillment” of OT Prophecy 1) How does the inaugurating of the New Covenant in Jesus relate to the OT Covenants? 2) What type of fulfillment will occur? 3) Must Prophecies be fulfilled in a Physical manner, or can they be fulfilled in a Spiritual Manner 4) How does the New Testament speak about those Prophecies? e.g., Does the NT speak about a “physical” fulfillment to the Jewish people of those prophecies? Is the physical “land” of theological importance in the NT? Is the physical “Temple” of theological importance in the NT? Which is more important in the NT, the Body of Christ or the ethnic Jewish people as a nation? 2 Corinthians 6 (NASB) 16b For we are the temple of the living God. As God has said: “I will live with them and walk among them, and I will be their God, and they will be my people.” Paraphrasing Ezekiel 37 (KGF) 26b and I will place my sanctuary in their midst forever. 27 And my dwelling place will be with them. And I will be their God, and they will be my people. Ephesians 2 (NASB) 19b So then you . are of God’s household, 20 having been built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus Himself being the corner stone, 21 in whom the whole building, being fitted together, is growing into a holy temple in the Lord, 22 in whom you also are being built together into a dwelling of God in the Spirit. John 7 (NASB) 37 . .Jesus stood and cried out, saying, “If anyone is thirsty, let them come to me and drink. 38 The one who believes in me, as the Scripture said, ‘From their innermost being will flow rivers of living water.’” 39 But this he spoke of the Spirit, whom those who believed in Him were to receive; .
