SONG OF SOLOMON 7:12 12 Let us get up early to the vineyards; let us see if the vine flourish, whether the tender grape appear, and the pomegranates bud forth: there will I give thee my loves. SONG OF SOLOMON 7:13 13 The mandrakes give a smell, and at our gates are all manner of pleasant fruits, new and old, which I have laid up for thee, O my beloved. [STOP] ISAIAH 61:7 7 For your shame ye shall have double; and for confusion they shall rejoice in their portion: therefore in their land they shall possess the double: everlasting joy shall be unto them. ISAIAH 61:8 8 For I the LORD love judgment, I hate robbery for burnt offering; and I will direct their work in truth, and I will make an everlasting covenant with them. JEREMIAH 31:34 34 And they shall teach no more every man his neighbour, and every man his brother, saying, Know the LORD: for they shall all know me, from the least of them unto the greatest of them, saith 3 the LORD: for I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more. PSALM 34:11 11 ¶ Come, ye children, hearken unto me: I will teach you the fear of the LORD. MICAH 4:2 2 And many nations shall come, and say, Come, and let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, and to the house of the God of Jacob; and he will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths: for the law shall go forth of Zion, and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem. In the fifth year of his own exile from Jerusalem, that is in 593 BC, Ezekiel was called by God to exercise a prophetic ministry to the house of Israel which he continued until about the year 570. Ezekiel was married, in fact his wife died as a sign from God on the day the siege of Jerusalem began, (24:18). He gives 318 precise measurements of the temple using some 37 unique words that are architectural terms, such as "door-posts," "windows," etc. ISAIAH 2:3 3 And many people shall go and say, Come ye, and let us go up to the mountain of the LORD, to the house of the God of Jacob; and he will teach us of his ways, and we will walk in his paths: for out of Zion shall go forth the law, and the word of the LORD from Jerusalem. ISAIAH 56:6 6 Also the sons of the stranger, that join themselves to the LORD, to serve him, and to love the name of the LORD, to be his servants, every one that keepeth the sabbath from polluting it, and taketh hold of my covenant; 4 ISAIAH 56:7 7 Even them will I bring to my holy mountain, and make them joyful in my house of prayer: their burnt offerings and their sacrifices shall be accepted upon mine altar; for mine house shall be called an house of prayer for all people. ZECHARIAH 6:12 12 And speak unto him, saying, Thus speaketh the LORD of hosts, saying, Behold the man whose name is The BRANCH; and he shall grow up out of his place, and he shall build the temple of the LORD: ZECHARIAH 6:13 13 Even he shall build the temple of the LORD; and he shall bear the glory, and shall sit and rule upon his throne; and he shall be a priest upon his throne: and the counsel of peace shall be between them both. ZECHARIAH 6:14 14 And the crowns shall be to Helem, and to Tobijah, and to Jedaiah, and to Hen the son of Zephaniah, for a memorial in the temple of the LORD. ZECHARIAH 6:15 15 And they that are far off shall come and build in the temple of the LORD, and ye shall know that the LORD of hosts hath sent me unto you. And this shall come to pass, if ye will diligently obey the voice of the LORD your God. ZECHARIAH 8:20 20 Thus saith the LORD of hosts; It shall yet come to pass, that there shall come people, and the inhabitants of many cities: ZECHARIAH 8:21 21 And the inhabitants of one city shall go to another, saying, Let us go speedily to pray before the LORD, and to seek the LORD of hosts: I will go also. 5 ZECHARIAH 8:22 22 Yea, many people and strong nations shall come to seek the LORD of hosts in Jerusalem, and to pray before the LORD. ZECHARIAH 8:23 23 Thus saith the LORD of hosts; In those days it shall come to pass, that ten men shall take hold out of all languages of the nations, even shall take hold of the skirt of him that is a Jew, saying, We will go with you: for we have heard that God is with you. DANIEL 9:24 24 Seventy weeks are determined upon thy people and upon thy holy city, to finish the transgression, and to make an end of sins, and to make reconciliation for iniquity, and to bring in everlasting righteousness, and to seal up the vision and prophecy, and to anoint the most Holy. Psalm 138:2-3 2I will worship toward thy holy temple, And give thanks unto thy name for thy lovingkindness and for thy truth: For thou hast magnified thy word above all thy name. 3In the day that I called thou answeredst me (ASV, 1901). Our God has given us much to be desired. We may not know the immediate importance of the facts and details of the Messianic Temple but God has not given us irrelevant, inconsequential or unnecessary plans and designs. These details of the future Temple provide us with an understanding of one of God’s characteristics. He is a God of order, facts, truth, plan and decorum. He does nothing haphazardly. While we may not see the 2 importance of His order it is apparent that He had an everlasting interest in the manner in which we worship Him as the Creator and Redeemer. We must seek to realize that these details are important to Him as He has gone to great length to provide them.

The Scriptures say it’s noble to “search the Scriptures daily” to verify truth like the ancient Bereans did (Acts 17:11). My folks came from Berea. My incredible Dad (and your grandfather and great grandfather, guys), Vasil Charles Valekis taught me to do this like he did---every day until I die. He taught me and everyone I know to go to church no matter what and to put God first. While Mama (Maria Pagona Stratakis Valekis) never really did this, she made sure we listened to Daddy on this one. She would have hit us with a spatula or frying pan or worse if we didn’t.     Ezekiel Week 22 Filling the Temple Chapters 43-46 Introduction We noted in the previous section the similarities between the world-constructing vision of Ezekiel 40–48 and Genesis 1–2. A further similarity emerges in Ezekiel 43–46 as the account of the formation of the different spaces in chapters 40–42 is followed by an account of their filling, just as the spaces formed in days 1–3 of Genesis 1 were subsequently filled in days 4–6. An empty temple is, by itself, worthless; it was made to be occupied. The logic of the description starts from the center with the filling of the Most Holy Place (Ezek. 43:1–9) and ends at the corners of the outer court, with the description of the activities in the kitchens (46:24). Return of God’s Glory (43:1-5) The return of the glory of the Lord to the new temple is the high point of chapters 43–46. This return, which reverses the abandonment of the temple and its destruction described in equally visionary form in chapters 8–11, is the fulfillment of the central promise of restoration: the Lord dwelling in the midst of his people forever (37:26–28). The connection with the previous visions is made explicit in 43:3: “The vision I saw was like the vision I had seen when he came to destroy the city and like the visions I had seen by the Kebar River.” The glory returns to the temple through the east gate, from the same direction in which it had earlier left (Ezek.

You have put me in the darkest depths. I am shut in. • 88:1-9. I Cry Out Day and Night Before You. This psalm is an individual lament and is the darkest psalm in the Psalter. Most laments let in a ray of sunshine, usually closing on a confident note; Psalm 88 is distinct from all the rest in that there is no explicit statement of confidence. Its presence in the Psalter shows that a believer can feel depressed and even have nothing good to say to God at the moment. It thus exemplifies a believer’s proper response in the depths of despair, when sometimes all one can do is pour out one’s heart to God and simply wait. The psalmist opens with an anguished cry of distress (vv. 1-2) and then recites his troubles, permeated with images of death (vv. 3-9). This section focuses more on the feelings than on the external circumstances. These despairing feelings, however, do not necessarily correspond to reality. Indeed, anyone genuinely singing this to the LORD, however miserable he may feel, can be assured that he is still expressing true faith.     Ezekiel Commentary-Daniel Woodhead The Book of Ezekiel INTRODUCTION TO EZEKIEL August 23, 2015 INTRODUCTION The Old Testament book of the Jewish Prophet Ezekiel is one of the so-called Major Prophets in the Christian Bible because of its length. The other four are Isaiah, Jeremiah, Lamentations and Daniel. The twelve so-called Minor Prophets follow these. They are designated minor due to their length. Therefore all the prophetic books are collected together in the Christian Bible. The Hebrew Bible, which is called the Tenach, arranges the books in a different order and assigns the Book of Ezekiel to third position in the category called the Latter Prophets (Hebrew, Neve’em). The other Later Prophets are Isaiah, Jeremiah and the Twelve Prophets. The Jewish Talmud arranges the sequence of the books of the Latter Prophets to follow a chronological order. Beginning with Jeremiah, which is primarily concerned with the prophecies of Israel’s destruction following the narrative of the books of Kings. Ezekiel, which begins with destruction, ends with the consolation of the Messianic Kingdom. Isaiah follows that and is almost all concerned with prophecies of consolation. These chapters are about Ezekiel's vision of an ideal temple being carefully measured. 1 Context Overview For much of their history the Israelites practised idolatry and all the immorality and wickedness that went with it. They “played the harlot” as God put it. They were unfaithful to the LORD. Even when they worshiped him their hearts were far from him. God finally gave the Israelites over to be conquered by the Assyrians. Later Judah was punished by means of the armies of Nebuchadnezzar, the mighty king of Babylon and Chaldea. But when the Medes and Persians took over, a remnant of the Israelites, who had been scattered among the nations, returned and resettled the land. Ezekiel’s prophecies looked forward to the return which took place decades later when leaders like Ezra and Nehemiah, encouraged the Israelites to live holy lives. The temple was rebuilt and its sacrifices restored. It was not as grand a temple as the one Ezekiel sees in his vision; nevertheless, the people based their lives on the temple and its laws and sacrifices. Furthermore, Ezekiel’s vision encouraged God’s people to live in hope for the kingdom of Heaven, the glorious and heavenly Israel to come. 2 Outline of Ezekiel 40-41-42 25th YEAR (Ezekiel 40:1). Doctor of Philosophy 2009 Donna L. Petter Department of Near and Middle Eastern Civilizations University of Toronto This dissertation is a comparison of the book of Ezekiel with the well-known city lament genre of ancient Mesopotamia. Nine shared features are analyzed and explained. These features derive from the work of Dobbs-Allsopp 1 and his comparison of biblical Lamentations with city laments of Mesopotamia. This material provides a fruitful point of comparison; one that is more than coincidental given Ezekiel’s geographical location in Nippur (the provenience of one of the five historical city laments). Compelling comparative evidence reveals that the lament genre is reflected in the book of Ezekiel and was used as a matrix for its compilation. Ezekiel’s usage of the city lament genre is, perhaps, the key to understanding the organizational structure of much of the book along with its various themes. 1 F. W.     1 graceWORKS ! GOING DEEPER The Papou Study Bible is a daily study provided by me to help folks explore the depth and joy of the “conneXion” life of God. It’s my personal study, and is not intended as a doctrinal statement or statement of any church or denomination or congregation. It’s also my belief that “grace” works, and the servant of God should always want to go deeper. Multi- tasking as usual, I’m also calling this the “Papou Study Bible.” I’m writing it as if I were speaking to my girls who love me and any descendant they have that love their Papou too. And to anyone who wants to consider me a spiritual Dad or “Papou.” I want them to be able to study the Bible with Papou (grandpa in Greek) after I’m gone---and if they don’t, I’ll haunt them. The Scriptures say it’s noble to “search the Scriptures daily” to verify truth like the ancient Bereans did (Acts 17:11). My folks came from Berea. My incredible Dad (and your grandfather and great grandfather, guys), Vasil Charles Valekis taught me to do this like he did---every day until I die. He taught me and everyone I know to go to church no matter what and to put God first. While Mama (Maria Pagona Stratakis Valekis) never really did this, she made sure we listened to Daddy on this one. She would have hit us with a spatula or frying pan or worse if we didn’t. This is a simple sharing my “daily search.” And I’d like to think it is a continuation of God’s life through my Dad through me.
