Dear Residents and Tenants,

I hope everyone had a great summer! Shanghai Centre has been busy striving to bring you a better living experience. Many new and exciting things are happening that I would like to share with you.

FIORI has renovated their nail salon to include a self-tanning service. Getting a nice tan is no longer limited to summer.

Renaud air is now located in the complex and carries one of the most popular air purifier brands, Blue air. Filter changes have never been easier.

Brioche Dorée has brought to Shanghai Centre the taste of original French baking. You can either pick up your breakfast quickly at their kiosk located at the Plaza or you can visit their 2F shop to unwind with afternoon tea.

Why not try something special like bubble tea at TPLUS located at the Plaza. Originating from Taiwan, bubble teas have become popular the world over.

Now there is even more great shopping at Shanghai Centre. LIULI gallery has a beautiful selection of handcrafted crystal glass artwork and the unique fashions of SHANGHAI TANG are now available in the lobby of The Portman Ritz-Carlton. In the next few months, we look forward to a few more fabulous additions to the complex including a Hawaiian and a Vietnamese restaurant as well as two high-end fashion houses. Stay tuned!

Let us also congratulate our F&B tenants who won City weekend’s Readers’ 2015 Choice Awards! Beef & Liberty won for Best Burger, PizzaExpress for Best Pizza, and Tock's for best Sandwiches & Delis!

To celebrate our 25th Anniversary, we are running a special referral program throughout the year! You have a chance to win iphones and free travel trips as rewards. Take this opportunity to invite your friends to also enjoy the great experience of living and working at Shanghai Centre!

COVER STORY

IN JANUARY 1979, one week after Normalization between China and the US, architect John "Jack" C. Portman III went with the Portman delegation to Shanghai, Beijing and Hangzhou to investigate real estate development opportunities in China. A few months later Deng Xiao Ping visited the United States and one of his stops was Atlanta. Deng stayed at the Peachtree Plaza Hotel, which was owned and designed by Portman. Deng gave a luncheon address to the Atlanta business community and met with Mr. John Portman II, Jack’s father. In that speech, Portman recalls, Deng was very expressive and confident in extolling his optimism regarding the growth and future of China. Just a few months later, Portman was back in China, laying the groundwork for what would eventually become one of the earliest and most successful East-West joint ventures – Shanghai Centre. As Shanghai Centre celebrates its 25th Anniversary, Portman shares his memories of that special time, as well as his reflections on the future of Shanghai as an international city, and the on- going relevance of Shanghai Centre. ARCHITECT JOHN C. PORTMAN III ON THE PAST AND FUTURE OF SHANGHAI & SHANGHAI CENTRE What were your first impressions of Shanghai?

Shanghai in 1979 was a step back in time. Streets were narrow and followed no geometric grid. Trees created linear caverns, with limbs and leaves overhanging the sun-sheltered streets, and streetlights had this soft, dull, amber light, which bordered on mystical. It was "SHANGHAI CENTRE the 1940’s. Nothing had changed over all those years. Clean air is a right not a privilege

Clean air is a right, not a privilege. This is the sentiment behind the push to improve China’s air quality, and ultimately raise the standard of living. At APAC this year, two of the world’s largest polluters made commitments to drastically improve air quality over the next 20 years. However, there are many things that we can do now to take a proactive approach in improving the air in our homes. For example, many people are unaware that much of the indoor pollution in our homes comes from the pipes in our bathrooms and kitchens. By closing bathroom doors, plugging sinks, and covering shower drains when not in use, uncomfortable smells and volatile organic compounds (VOC’s) are reduced. More things we can do: Close windows. It’s very common in offices and homes in China to minimize AC usage and promote airflow by opening windows. Unfortunately, the majority of days in China are above the 70AQI standard set by the WHO. Clean AC units. AC units collect dust and can grow mold. Mold spores are then injected into the room and increase allergy reactions in sensitive people. Change HEPA filters. Most residents in Shanghai are aware that the only true way to take control of the air quality in your home and office is to use an air purifier with HEPA filter. It is recommended to change filters every 6 months, but in Shanghai it can be as soon as 3 or 4 months depending on use and pollution levels.

Assess air quality.
