Biographical Note by The HistoryMakers® Jazz composer and saxophonist Sonny Rollins was born on September 7, 1930 in New York City. His parents, immigrants from the U.S. Virgin Islands, raised him in Manhattan’s central Harlem and Sugar Hill neighborhoods. Rollins received his first alto saxophone at seven years old; and was heavily influenced by saxophonist Charlie Parker by the time he enrolled at Edward W. Stitt Junior High School. Rollins switched to tenor saxophone, and was mentored by pianist Thelonious Monk. Upon graduating from high school, Rollins made his first recordings with Babs Gonzales, J.J. Johnson, Bud Powell, and Fats Navarro. He went on to record with such jazz legends as Miles Davis, the Modern Jazz Quartet, Charlie Parker and Thelonious Monk. In 1954, Rollins’ compositions “Oleo,” “Airegin,” and “Doxy” were featured on Miles Davis’ Bags' Groove.

    CifuJazz Discografía de BLUE NOTE Records Colección particular de Juan Claudio Cifuentes Introducción Sin duda uno de los sellos verdaderamente históricos del jazz, Blue Note nació en 1939 de la mano de Alfred Lion y Max Margulis. El primero era un alemán que se había aficionado al jazz en su país y que, una vez establecido en Nueva York en el 37, no tardaría mucho en empezar a grabar a músicos de boogie woogie como Meade Lux Lewis y Albert Ammons. Su socio, Margulis, era un escritor de ideología comunista. Los primeros testimonios del sello van en la dirección del jazz tradicional, por entonces a las puertas de un inesperado revival en plena era del swing. Una sentida versión de Sidney Bechet del clásico Summertime fue el primer gran éxito de la nueva compañía. Blue Note solía organizar sus sesiones de grabación de madrugada, una vez terminados los bolos nocturnos de los músicos, y pronto se hizo popular por su respeto y buen trato a los artistas, que a menudo podían involucrarse en tareas de producción. Otro emigrante aleman, el fotógrafo Francis Wolff, llegaría para unirse al proyecto de su amigo Lion, creando un tandem particulamente memorable. Sus imágenes, unidas al personal diseño del artista gráfico Reid Miles, constituyeron la base de las extraordinarias portadas de Blue Note, verdadera seña de identidad estética de la compañía en las décadas siguientes mil veces imitada. Tharp 2020 ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ABSTRACT Thorough examination of the existing research and the content of ballad and folk song collections reveals a lack of information regarding the methods by which folk musicians learn the music they perform. The centuries-old practice of folk song and ballad performance is well- documented. Many Child ballads and other folk songs have been passed down through the generations. Oral tradition is the principal method of transmission in Ozark folk music. The variants this method produces are considered evidence of authenticity. Although alteration is a distinguishing characteristic of songs passed down in the oral tradition, many ballad variants have persisted in the folk record for great lengths of time without being altered beyond recognition.

Cohen (guest post)* Jelly Roll Morton Jelly Roll Morton (1885-1941), born Ferdinand Joseph Lamothe in New Orleans, had Creole parents. He began playing the piano at an early age in the New Orleans Storyville neighborhood during the birth pangs of jazz. For a decade, starting in 1907, he traveled the country as a vaudeville musician and singer; in 1915 his composition “The Jelly Roll Blues” became the first published jazz tune. From 1917 to 1923, he continued performing from his base in Los Angeles, then moved to Chicago where he met Walter and Lester Melrose, who had a music publishing company. Along with his sheet music, Morton began recording for Paramount Records in 1923 as well as for Gennett Records in Richmond, Indiana, and for the Autograph label. Backed by various session musicians, particularly the Red Hot Peppers, his most influential recordings came in 1926-30, first for Vocalion, then for RCA-Victor. With the onslaught of the Depression, Morton’s career languished, so he moved to New York, then Washington, D.C., in 1936. He now hosted show “The History of Jazz” on WOL and performed in a local club. Known in 1937 as the Music Box/Jungle Inn, there he met the young, creative, and energetic Alan Lomax. Born in Austin, Texas, the son of the folklorist John Lomax, Alan Lomax (1915-2002) had become assistant-in-charge of the Archive of American Folk Song at the Library of Congress (LC) in 1937.
