Jelly Roll Morton interviews conducted by Alan Lomax (1938) Added to the National Registry: 2003 Essay by Ronald D. Cohen (guest post)* Jelly Roll Morton Jelly Roll Morton (1885-1941), born Ferdinand Joseph Lamothe in New Orleans, had Creole parents. He began playing the piano at an early age in the New Orleans Storyville neighborhood during the birth pangs of jazz. For a decade, starting in 1907, he traveled the country as a vaudeville musician and singer; in 1915 his composition “The Jelly Roll Blues” became the first published jazz tune. From 1917 to 1923, he continued performing from his base in Los Angeles, then moved to Chicago where he met Walter and Lester Melrose, who had a music publishing company. Along with his sheet music, Morton began recording for Paramount Records in 1923 as well as for Gennett Records in Richmond, Indiana, and for the Autograph label. Backed by various session musicians, particularly the Red Hot Peppers, his most influential recordings came in 1926-30, first for Vocalion, then for RCA-Victor. With the onslaught of the Depression, Morton’s career languished, so he moved to New York, then Washington, D.C., in 1936. He now hosted show “The History of Jazz” on WOL and performed in a local club. Known in 1937 as the Music Box/Jungle Inn, there he met the young, creative, and energetic Alan Lomax. Born in Austin, Texas, the son of the folklorist John Lomax, Alan Lomax (1915-2002) had become assistant-in-charge of the Archive of American Folk Song at the Library of Congress (LC) in 1937.

  • Unbound Jazz: Composing and Performing in a Multi- Cultural Tonality
Unbound Jazz: Composing and Performing in a Multi- Cultural Tonality By Carlo Estolano Commentaries for the PhD folio of compositions University of York Music December 2017 2 3 Unbound Jazz: Composing and Performing in a Multi-Cultural Tonality Thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of a PhD degree in Music at The University of York, December 2018 by Carlo Estolano. Abstract This folio is conceived to propose and demonstrate music realisation of original compositions throughout the employment of elements of mainly two distinct sources: a selection from the wide palette of Brazilian folk styles that have improvisation as a strong element, which is internationally acknowledged as Brazilian Jazz; and its intersections with a certain style of European Jazz represented by artists notable by their keenness to combine elements from distinct musical genres with their Classical background, such as Ralph Towner, Jan Garbarek, John Abercrombie, Eberhard Weber, Kenny Wheeler, Terje Rypdal, Keith Jarrett to name a few. Both Brazilian and European approaches to Jazz seem to share processes of appropriation of foreign musical languages, as well as utilising characteristic features of their own traditions. Another common ground is their relation with some elements and procedures of classical music. The methodology to accomplish an organized collection of musical material was to divide them in five major influences, part of them by composers and part by genres notable by having evolved through absorbing elements from distinct cultural sources. In five projects, fifteen original compositions are provided along with their recorded and/or filmed performances and commentaries about the compositional aspects, concerningthe style or composer focused on.

  • Resonance Records to Release Long Lost Wes Montgomery Tapes, Echoes of Indiana Avenue, on March 6, 2012
RESONANCE RECORDS TO RELEASE LONG LOST WES MONTGOMERY TAPES, ECHOES OF INDIANA AVENUE, ON MARCH 6, 2012 FIRST FULL ALBUM OF PREVIOUSLY UNHEARD MONTGOMERY MUSIC IN OVER 25 YEARS RELEASE COINCIDES WITH MONTGOMERY'S 88TH BIRTHDAY With a lot of sleuthing and a team of experts on the case, long lost tapes of Wes Montgomery have been discovered and restored. Resonance Records will release Echoes of Indiana Avenue - the first full album of previously unheard Montgomery music in over 25 years - on March 6, 2012, which would have been Montgomery's 88th birthday. Over a year and a half in the making, the release will provide a rare, revealing glimpse of a bona fide guitar legend. The tapes are the earliest known recordings of Montgomery as a leader, pre-dating his auspicious 1959 debut on Riverside Records. The album showcases Montgomery in performance from 1957-1958 at nightclubs in his hometown of Indianapolis, Indiana, as well as rare studio recordings. The release is also beautifully packaged, containing previously unseen photographs and insightful essays by noted music writers and musicians alike, including guitarist Pat Martino and Montgomery's brothers Buddy and Monk. On this scintillating discovery, Montgomery plays it strictly straight ahead, swinging with a momentum and ferocity that is positively visceral - a clear display of Montgomery's bebop side. Listening to these recordings only reaffirms how Montgomery exerted such a profound influence over generations of guitarists - from George Benson, Pat Martino and Joe Pass to John Scofield, Pat Metheny, Kevin Eubanks, and Russell Malone to Kurt Rosenwinkel. Joined by such Naptown colleagues as drummer Paul Parker and keyboardist Melvin Rhyne (who would later appear on Montgomery's first Riverside release), pianist Earl Van Riper, bassist Mingo Jones and drummer Sonny Johnson, as well as brothers Monk on acoustic bass and Buddy on piano (the brothers featured on one track), Montgomery swings with blistering abandon on a program of burners and ballads.
