(4) Trong Kinh Pháp Hoa , ðức Phật Bổn Sư Thích Ca Mâu Ni tuyên thuyết rằng chư Phật trong quá khứ cũng như ðức Phật ðấng Như Lai, Bậc A La Hán Chánh ðẳng Chánh Giác xuất hiện trong thế gian là ñể “chỉ bày cho tất cả chúng sanh thấy tri kiến của Như Lai, làm cho chúng sanh nhập vào tri kiến Như Lai, chứng ngộ tri kiến Như Lai”. Nhất Thừa hay Phật Thừa (Buddhayana) là cổ xe duy nhất ñể ñưa chúng sanh ñạt ñến Phật quả Vô Thượng Chánh ðẳng Chánh Giác. Cũng vậy, như ñóa hoa udumbara nở rực rỡ, này Xá Lợi Phất, bây giờ Như Lai thuyết giảng giống như vậy, Chánh Pháp ñược chỉ bày có hình thức như vậy. Này Xá Lợi Phất, hãy tin lời Ta, ðiều Ta nói là thật, ñiều Ta nói là chân lý, ñiều ta nói là không hư dối. Thật là khó hiểu sự diễn giải tạng bí mật của Như Lai, Này Xá Lợi Phất, vì làm sáng tỏ Chánh Pháp, Này Xá Lợi Phất, ta dùng hàng trăm ngàn phương tiện thiện xảo, như là nhiều cách giải thích, nhiều cách chỉ bày, nhiều sự giảng giải, nhiều minh họa khác nhau. Này Xá Lợi Phất, không phải bởi lý luận mà Chánh Pháp ñược tìm ra: nó vượt ra ngoài giới hạn của lý luận, nhưng Chánh Pháp phải ñược Như Lai chỉ bày. 7 Này Xá Lợi Phất, Vì cớ sao ? Vì một ñối tượng duy nhất gì, một mục ñích duy nhất gì, chắc chắn là vì một ñối tượng cao thượng gì, một mục ñích cao thượng gì mà ðức Phật, ðấng Như Lai, Bậc A La Hán, Chánh ðẳng Chánh Giác xuất hiện trong thế gian ? ðó là ñể chỉ bày cho tất cả chúng sanh thấy tri kiến của Như Lai mà ðức Phật, ðấng Như Lai, Bậc A La Hán Chánh ðẳng Chánh Giác xuất hiện trong thế gian. Này Xá Lợi Phất, ñây là ñối tượng duy nhất, mục ñích duy nhất, mục tiêu duy nhất của sự xuất hiện của Ngài trong thế gian. Này Xá Lợi Phất, như vậy ñó là ñối tượng duy nhất, mục ñích duy nhất, ñối tượng cao thượng, mục ñích cao thượng của ðức Như Lai. Lại nữa, nó ñược thành tựu bởi ðức Như Lai. Vì cớ sao? này Xá Lợi Phất, Ta chỉ cho tất cả chúng sanh thấy cái tri kiến của Như Lai, Ta làm mở mắt cho tất cả chúng sanh thấy ñược tri kiến của Như Lai; Này Xá Lợi Phất, Ta thiết lập vững chắc Giáo Pháp về tri kiến của Như Lai; Này Xá Lợi Phất, Ta dẫn dắt ñến giáo Pháp của Như Lai bằng con ñường chân chánh. Này Xá Lợi Phất, vì những ý nghĩa nhất thừa, Phật thừa, ñể dẫn dụ Ta giảng cho chúng sanh Diệu Pháp; không có thừa thứ hai, cũng không có thừa thứ ba. Này Xá Lợi Phất, ñây là Pháp Tánh phổ quát trong thế gian, trong mọi phương hướng. Vì cớ sao ? Này Xá Lợi Phất, tất cả ðức Như Lai, Bậc A La Hán, Chánh ðẳng Chánh Giác trong thời quá khứ ñã xuất hiện trong vô số vô lượng thế giới hệ trong mọi phương hướng vì lợi ích cho số ñông, vì hạnh phúc cho số ñông chúng sanh, Ngài giảng Diệu Pháp cho chư thiên và loài người bằng những phương tiện có thể, như nhiều phương cách, nhiều sự chỉ dẫn, nhiều lý lẽ, nhiều lý luận, nhiều minh họa, nhiều ý tưởng nền tảng, nhiều sự giải thích, tôn trọng những căn cơ của chúng sanh, những sở thích của chúng sanh, những tính khí của chúng sanh có quá nhiều hiển lộ, này Xá Lợi Phất, mà tất cả Chư Phật và Thế Tôn ñã thuyết giảng Chánh Pháp cho chúng sanh bằng nhiều phương tiện khéo léo của một thừa duy nhất, Phật Thừa, và cuối cùng dẫn ñến Nhất Thiết Chủng Trí; Cũng hệt như vậy, với sự phô bày cho tất cả chúng sanh thấy Tri kiến Như Lai; với sự mở mắt cho chúng sanh thấy Tri kiến của Như Lai, 8 với sự thức tĩnh nhờ thấy ñược tri kiến của Như Lai, với sự dẫn dắt ñến giáo thuyết tri kiến của Như Lai bằng con ñường chân chánh. Cũng vậy, ñó là Diệu Pháp mà chư Phật ñã thuyết giảng cho chúng sanh. Này Xá Lợi Phất, những chúng sanh ñã nghe Chánh Pháp từ những ðức Như Lai, Bậc A La Hán, Chánh ðẳng Chánh Giác trong quá khứ, tất cả chúng sanh ñó ñều ñạt ñược Vô Thượng Chánh ðẳng Chánh Giác.” (7) Tất cả chúng sanh ñều sở hữu chủng tử Phật, và ñều có khả năng trở thành một vị Phật như lời tuyên thuyết trong phẩm Phương Tiện của Kinh Diệu Pháp Liên Hoa vừa dẫn ra ở phần trên. Nhưng chúng sanh vẫn mãi mê ngụp lặn trong ngôi nhà lửa như những ñứa con mãi mê chơi trong ngôi nhà cháy. Ẩn dụ 3 xe: xe nai, xe dê, và xe trâu và ngôi nhà cháy là một trong bảy ẩn dụ của Kinh Pháp Hoa, (8) ñược ðức Phật quyền xảo ñể lập ra 3 thừa: Thanh Văn thừa tương ứng xe nai, Duyên Giác thừa tương ứng xe dê, và Bồ Tát thừa tương ứng với xe trâu phù hợp với từng căn tánh dị biệt của chúng sanh như sự mô tả trong những bài kệ của Phẩm 3 Thí du (aupamyaparivarta ḥ) sau ñây: […..] śrutvā ca so tatra pravi ṣṭ u k ṣipra ṁ pramocanārthāya tadātmajānām| mā mahya bālā imi sarva dārakā dahyeyu naśyeyu ca k ṣiprameva||64|| sa bhā ṣate te ṣamagārado ṣān du ḥkha ṁ ida ṁ bho ḥ kulaputra dāru ṇam| vividhāśca sattveha aya ṁ ca agni mahantikā du ḥkhapara ṁparā tu||65|| āśīvi ṣā yak ṣa suraudracittā ḥ kumbhā ṇḍ a pretā bahavo vasanti| bheru ṇḍ akā ḥ śvānaś ṛgālasa ṁghā gṛdhrāśca āhāra gave ṣamā ṇāḥ||66|| etād ṛśāsmin bahavo vasanti 9 vināpi cāgne ḥ parama ṁ subhairavam| du ḥkha ṁ ida ṁ kevalamevarūpa ṁ samantataścāgniraya ṁ pradīpta ḥ||67|| te codyamānāstatha bālabuddhaya

The Introduction of Pre-Nyingma Buddhism and Zhang-zhung Rites to Central Tibet Zhang-zhung was conquered by Yarlung (Central Tibet) in 645 CE. The Yarlung Emperor Songtsen-gampo (Srong-btsan sgam-po) had wives not only from the Chinese and Nepali royal families (both of whom brought a few Buddhist texts and statues), but also from the royal family of Zhang-zhung. The court adopted Zhang-zhung (Bon) burial rituals and animal sacrifice, although Bon says that animal sacrifice was native to Tibet, not a Bon custom. The Emperor built thirteen Buddhist temples around Tibet and Bhutan, but did not found any monasteries. This pre-Nyingma phase of Buddhism in Central Tibet did not have dzogchen teachings. In fact, it is difficult to ascertain what level of Buddhist teachings and practice were introduced.

Religious tolerance in Achaemenid Empire continued in Parthian Era as well. This religious openness among public lasts in Seleucid Empire and after them, in Parthian era, and let the other religions to enter to Iran. Of course it shall be considered that after Seleucid’s attack to Iran, the Iranian’s lost their self-esteem, therefore their belief to religion became poor and acceptance of foreign religions was common in this era. One of these foreign religions was Buddhism. Buddhism formed in east and northeast of Iran. Its missionaries tried to extend their influence inside Iran and find some followers among Iranians. This is a library study to investigate Iranians approach toward Buddhism in Parthian Era, the followers of this religion, and the areas affected by this religion in the Parthian Era. This investigation is performed using different reference texts, historical resources and the literatures regarding Buddhism in Iran in Parthian Era. This is worth to mention that one can conclude that due to the religious tolerance in Parthian Era, a lot of new religions emerged in this era and Buddhism is one of them. The main problem of the author is the lack of references for the chosen subject and there is no direct reference about Buddhism history in the Parthian Era.

Geburtstag von Michael Mann An den Titel meiner ersten Lehrveranstaltung bei Professor Rothermund im Jahr 1983 kann ich mich beim besten Willen nicht erinnern. Erinnern, das ist eher eine seiner ganz großen Stärken. Herr Rothermund wird noch heute nicht nur den Titel der Veranstaltung, sondern auch das Thema meiner Hausarbeit damals parat haben. An dieses erinnere ich mich immer- hin: „Der Zufall in der Geschichte“. Wie ich den Zufall bearbeitet habe, gefiel ihm. Warum das so war, müssen Sie ihn fragen. Ich weiß es nicht mehr. Sowohl zur Geschichte Südasiens wie zu Herrn Rothermund kam ich, nachdem ich mein Studium der Geschichte und Germanistik nach zwei Semestern für ein Jahr unterbrochen hatte, um als „Backpacker“ Südasien zu erkunden. Von Land und Leuten keine Ahnung, war ich nach einem Jahr Aufenthalt so begeistert, dass ich mich unversehens in seine Vorlesun- gen setzte und mich schließlich auch überzeugt auf Indologie und Geschichte Südasiens um- schrieb.

Moğol istilası ile İran coğrafyasındaki İlhanlı sarayında tekrar canlanır. Bu dönemde önceki dönemden farklı bir statüye ulaşır. Çeşitli sebepler ve süreçler; Uygur, Çin, Tangut ve Tibet Budizmi gibi İlhanlı Budizmi’ni de şekillendirmiştir. Budizm, Gazan Han ve halefi Olcaytu’nun İslam’ı seçmesinden sonra İran’da ortadan kalkmış ve yalnızca İranlı sanatçıların eserlerinde ve İranlı yazarların yazılarında temsil edilen bilim ve sanat formunda yaşamaya devam etmiştir. İlhanlı dönemi İran’ında gelişme gösteren Budizm ile ilgili tarihi çalışmalarda Moğollar arasındaki çeşitli Budist okullarının; Budizm ile aile kurumu, siyaset, ahlak, bilim, sanat, ekonomi, gibi sosyal kurumlar arasındaki ilişkilerin ve ayrıca bir yandan Budistler ve Müslümanlar arasındaki teorik etkileşimleri, diğer yandan Budistler ve diğer dini ve mezhebi azınlıkların arasındaki ilişkilerin ortaya konması gerekmektedir. Bunların tamamının bu makale kapsamına ortaya konmasının mümkün olmadığı açıktır. Bu sebeple bu makalede sadece Moğollardaki Budist okulları ve İlhanlı sarayındaki Budizm’in varlığı ve buradan yola çıkarak kısmen siyaset üzerindeki etkisinden bahsedilecektir.     The long shadow of Emmy Wellesz with a translation of her ‘Buddhist Art in Bactria and Gandhāra’ Karl Johns Emilia Franciska Stross (1889-1987) had married Egon Josef Wellesz (1885-1974) in Vienna in August 1908. She was known as Emmy both informally and in documents such as the university records. As it was published in the summary article below, her dissertation exemplifies work being done in Josef Strzygowski’s ‘I. Kunsthistorisches Institut der Universität Wien’ during the time when Heinrich Glück (1889-1930) was active there. Since her life and career were intertwined with that of her husband, she also provides evidence of the influence of art historians on musicology in the early 20th century. Emmy Wellesz had been a favourite student of Eugenie Schwarzwald at the famous private girl’s school founded and led by her, and was then enrolled at the university in the department led by Josef Strzygowski while also attending the teaching of Max Dvořák. She was employed as ‘Assistentin’ to Strzygowski and earned her doctorate with the aforementioned study and then herself taught at the Schwarzwaldschule. As is well known, her sometime fellow teachers there among others included Adolf Loos, Egon Friedell, Oskar Kokoschka and Arnold Schoenberg. When Schoenberg cancelled his classes there, Egon Wellesz is thought to have become his earliest private student. They were nonetheless not as close as others. Aside from their differences in style and attitude to voice, drama, orchestration and other elements, it might actually have been the very sociability of Egon Wellesz that to some degree alienated Arnold Schönberg.

    Appendix: Certain Influences of Shaivism and Tantra on the Islamic Mystics In order to have an integrated understanding of the S´aivite and Tan- tric influences on certain mystical currents in the Islamic world, it behooves us to consider the need for a future comprehensive volume. This appendix is only a brief introduction to what may be buried or disguised in the memory of the past. The porous borders between the Indian and the Islamic worlds have always created inevitable cross- influences, which can no longer be overlooked. In India, if the Sufis and yogic masters lived side by side, they must have intermingled and influenced one another. Certainly, various Hatha Yoga and S´aivite ideas became manifested in the practices of the Sufis in India as they absorbed non-Islamic elements.1 Chroniclers record that in thirteenth-century Sind some dervish orders would gather in certain S´iva temples.2 Shaivism as a potent spiritual order assimilated many elements from other traditions. The multifaceted nature of some of its practices and universal conceptual ideas meant that S´aiva practices could be car- ried on under other names. And with its syncretic system of practices, Shaivism spread through north India, Central Asia, and Iran, “influ- encing both Qalandars and Sufis.”3 The strength of Shaivism’s his- torical presence was such that the early Kushan dynasty (ca. 80–375), in what is now Afghanistan, adopted Shaivism alongside Buddhism: their coins depicted S´iva on one side and the Buddha on the other.4 The archaeological evidence for the

Ontology of Discontinuity: Buddhism and Descartes This paper proposes an alternative conception of persistence that challenges our basic presupposition about persistence of persons. We presuppose the ontology of continuity, the belief that the basic nature of existence is to continue to exist. I give arguments for the opposite view: the ontology of discontinuity, according to which the basic nature of existence is to perish unless made to continue. The arguments in support of the ontology of discontinuity come from Descartes and the Buddhist logicians, such as Dharmakīrti, Śāntarakṣita and Ratnakīrti. The main purpose of this paper is to articulate the ontology of discontinuity through the discussion of these philosophers. One of the distinctive features of Islamic art in Safavid Persia is the exquisite iconographies of biblical figures. Under the influence of the vast Mongol empire, Islamicate biblical iconographies synthesized East Asian artistic motifs with folktales and writings of biblical progenitors drawn from Jewish-Christian traditions. Three East Asian artistic features are commonly found in Islamicate biblical iconographies, they are the Chinese dragon, the immortal realm and the flame nimbus. By tracing the use of each prominent East Asian artistic motif in two dispersed Fāl-Nāma ( The Book of Omens ) illustrations of Adam and Eve, and their later copies in the Stories of the Prophets ( Qiṣaṣ al-anbiyā’), this article dis- cusses how East Asian artistic motifs contribute to different interpretations of Islamicate portray- als of Adam and Eve in the early modern period. 1 An intriguing Islamicate illustration in the mid-sixteenth century portrays a bright and delightful scene in Genesis 3.
