Biendarra University of Cincinnati In March 1999, critic Volker Hage adopted a term in Der Spiegel that subsequently dominated public discussions about new Ger- man literature by female authors-"Frauleinwunder."' He uses it collectively for "the young women who make sure that German literature is again a subject of discussion this spring." Hage as- serts that they seem less concerned with "the German question," the consequences of two German dictatorships, and prefer in- stead to thematize "eroticism and love" in their texts.

Cambridge University Press 978-0-521-19237-8 - The Novel in German Since 1990 Edited by Stuart Taberner Excerpt More information Introduction: The novel in German since 1990 Stuart Taberner the problem with the german novel In his The German Novel, published in 1956 and for a long time a standard reference work in the English-speaking world, Roy Pascal averred that even the very best of German fiction was marred by a ‘sad lack of the energy and bite of passion’. It was impossible to deny, the British critic claimed, that there was ‘something provincial, philistine’ at its core. Indeed, he concluded, German writing was strangely lacking – ‘Altogether the char- acters in the German novels seem less alive, less avid of life, less capable of overflowing exuberances, than those of the great European novels.’1 Pascal’s oddly damning assessment of his object of study might today be merely of historical interest as an example of the supposition of a German Sonderweg (special path) apart from other European nations, widely promulgated in the countries that had defeated Nazism only a few years earlier, if it were not for the fact that similar indictments feature throughout the 1990s in a series of debates on the German novel’s post- war development. These more recent criticisms, however, were voiced not by critics outside Germany seeking to identify its ‘peculiarity’ but in the Federal Republic itself. While scholarly attention has focused, then, on Ulrich Greiner’s attack on Christa Wolf’s alleged cowardly opportunism in waiting until the collapse

Advocating the decisive role of the social functions of cultural products, my investigation starts from the thesis that, with the electronic mass media acquiring a dominant role in the cultural sphere, a functional differen- tiation has taken place, forcing authors of artistic aspiration to focus on the media-specific strengths and benefits of literature as text while at the same urging them to adjust to the con- sumption patterns of mass entertainment – not least because literature as institution is increas- ingly permeated by the laws of a globalized market.

UC Berkeley TRANSIT Title 'Schriftstellerin zu sein und in seinem Leben anwesend zu sein, ist für mich eins': Ein Gespräch mit Terézia Mora Permalink https://escholarship.org/uc/item/2c83t7s8 Journal TRANSIT, 3(1) Author Biendarra, Anke Publication Date 2007-06-22 DOI 10.5070/T731009718 Peer reviewed eScholarship.org Powered by the California Digital Library University of California Terézia Mora was born in 1971 in Sopron, Hungary, in the border region close to Austria, where she grew up as part of the German-speaking minority. When the borders were crumbling in the Eastern bloc, Mora made her way to Berlin, where she has lived since 1990. She studied Hungarian studies and theater studies at Humboldt University and script writing at the German Film and Television Academy. Since 1998 she has worked as a freelance author writing prose, plays for the stage, and scripts for television. She is also a well-known literary translator from the Hungarian. Mora has won a range of prizes and stipends for her literary work and translations. Her first collection of stories, Seltsame Materie (Rowohlt, 1999), garnered the Ingeborg Bachmann Prize (1999) and the Adelbert-von-Chamisso-Förderpreis (2000). Alle Tage (Luchterhand, 2004), her highly acclaimed first novel, was awarded the Prize of the Leipzig Book Fair in 2005. The following interview was conducted in Berlin on September 11, 2007. Terézia Mora and I met at her newly established workspace in Prenzlauer Berg, in a quiet, nicely renovated Hinterhaus . The signs of Mora’s recent move were still visible in the unpacked boxes and the general emptiness of the space.
