Adrian Scigajlo, 3GB3, scigaa, 1217741 3GB3 Presentation Here are the transcribed notes from my presentation, I made sure it's very close to what I had written. Game Worlds Introduction - World, Setting, Game Setting - Interact with (Singleplayer) - Physical, Temporal, Environmental, Emotional, Ethical, + Realism Artificial Universe - Not all games but... - All games have symbols - Sometimes a board (Tic-tac-toe vs Settlers of Catan) - Can include cultures, styles, set of moral values - Not only visuals! - Some games entertain by Gameplay - Some through story and narrative - Without the world, it would not exist - Different world, different game - The more you concentrate on games core mechanics, the less the game world matters. Dimensions - Different properties which define Game Worlds Physical Dimension - Simulated Physical Space Spatial - Not the same as how it is displayed! 2D - Top Down - Side Scrolling - 3D render for 2D games 2,5D ' -Layers 3D 4D - Extra world, shadow world, light and dark world etc. Scale - Physical size relative - Unit speed (vs. real life) - Distort scale for gameplay, but not enough to ruin player experience - "Look real, Play Well" - Dealt with in different ways - Indoors vs Outdoors - Kirov's, helicopters (Jets tend to be too fast) - Simulation games. Boundaries - Edge of board, Edge of world - Sports stadium - Indoors - Natural Borders - Defined Locations (Planets, levels) - Illusion of infinite world -For open world games, Mountains, boundaries, world wrap - Procedural Generation (No Man's Sky) Temporal - Turn-based games, stuff idles and sits - Doesn't mean racing games - Sometimes passage of time is visual - Minecraft has spooky nights Variable Time - Speed up, slow down - Time Scales - No sleep for soldiers Anomalous Time - Smelting iron, Tree growing, building units - Having a time scale reference does not help (eg, age of empires years counter, berry collecting symbols) - Production vs Warfare Letting Players Adjust Time - Some football games have three hour games - Some try to be shorter - Sims allows speed ups - Skyrim allows waiting Conclusion and Videos This is EVE, shots from EVE online that show the rich player created world and setting: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AdfFnTt2UT0 (some swearing) Trine A 3D rendered 2D game https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iXamgP-j-xU Legend of Grimrock, another 3D rendered 2D game, in orcs and elves dungeon crawl style. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ae-SmQnTtUU Achron!
