  • Hill Walking & Mountaineering
Hill Walking & Mountaineering in Snowdonia Introduction The craggy heights of Snowdonia are justly regarded as the finest mountain range south of the Scottish Highlands. There is a different appeal to Snowdonia than, within the picturesque hills of, say, Cumbria, where cosy woodland seems to nestle in every valley and each hillside seems neatly manicured. Snowdonia’s hillsides are often rock strewn with deep rugged cwms biting into the flank of virtually every mountainside, sometimes converging from two directions to form soaring ridges which lead to lofty peaks. The proximity of the sea ensures that a fine day affords wonderful views, equally divided between the ever- changing seas and the serried ranks of mountains fading away into the distance. Eryri is the correct Welsh version of the area the English call Snowdonia; Yr Wyddfa is similarly the correct name for the summit of Snowdon, although Snowdon is often used to demarcate the whole massif around the summit. The mountains of Snowdonia stretch nearly fifty miles from the northern heights of the Carneddau, looming darkly over Conwy Bay, to the southern fringes of the Cadair Idris massif, overlooking the tranquil estuary of the Afon Dyfi and Cardigan Bay. From the western end of the Nantlle Ridge to the eastern borders of the Aran range is around twenty- five miles. Within this area lie nine distinct mountain groups containing a wealth of mountain walking possibilities, while just outside the National Park, the Rivals sit astride the Lleyn Peninsula and the Berwyns roll upwards to the east of Bala. The traditional bases of Llanberis, Bethesda, Capel Curig, Betws y Coed and Beddgelert serve the northern hills and in the south Barmouth, Dinas Mawddwy, Dolgellau, Tywyn, Machynlleth and Bala provide good locations for accessing the mountains.

The IWA is an independent organisation owing no allegiance to any political or economic interest group. Our only interest is in seeing Wales flourish as a country in which to work and live. We are funded by a range of organisations and individuals, including the Joseph Rowntree Charitable Trust, the Esmée Fairbairn Foundation, and the Waterloo Foundation. The H’mm Foundation is named after H’m, a volume of poetry by R.S. Thomas, and because the musing sound ‘H’mm’ is an internationally familiar ‘expression’, crossing all linguistic frontiers. This literary venture has already secured the support of well-known poets and writers, including Gillian Clarke, National Poet for Wales, Jon Gower, Menna Elfyn, Nigel Jenkins, Peter Finch and Gwyneth Lewis.

  • TAC Response to Holding the BBC to Account for the Delivery of Its Mission and Public
Response to Ofcom Consultation: Holding the BBC to account for the delivery of its mission and public purposes July 2017 TAC Response: Holding the BBC to account for the delivery of its mission and public purposes 2 ____________________________________________________________________________________________________ About TAC 1. TAC is the trade association which represents the independent TV production sector in Wales, which is comprised of over 40 companies making TV content for all the UK Public Service networks, plus BBC Wales and S4C, as well as being involved in international co-productions. Like all current content production companies, TAC’s members work across online platforms and many also make radio, including for national BBC stations Radio Wales and Radio Cymru. 2. During the BBC Charter Review process, TAC supported the idea of Ofcom regulating the BBC and put the arguments for doing so directly to Sir David Clementi and the then Secretary of State for Culture, Media & Sport, as well as putting them in its written response to the Green Paper. We are therefore pleased that Charter Review decided that the BBC should be externally regulated by Ofcom, and look forward to working with Ofcom going forward. 3. Clearly, the operating licence and operating framework form an important part of Ofcom’s regulation of the BBC, and contain key provisions relating to the BBC’s relationship with the creative industries. Capacity of the production sector in Wales 4. On a general level, we would like to reiterate a point we have raised with Ofcom previously regarding its 2015 review of the TV production sector, which reproduced inaccurate figures from a research report claiming that Wales had only ten active TV production companies1.

  • Snowdonia 1911 – 2016 V8 (By Alfie Windsor (64-68))
OCs & Snowdonia 1911 – 2016 v8 (by Alfie Windsor (64-68)) When the ship moved to Glyn Garth in 1941 cadets were drawn by the sight of the mountains of Snowdonia dominating the southern horizon;“We begged the captain to allow us to walk in the hills at weekends.” The idea was regarded with suspicion at first but Captain Goddard eventually allowed day expeditions on selected Sundays. The first walk scaled an “unimposing (and un- identified) hill of 1700 feet. The first tramp in the hills was quite memorable … we were determined to repeat it.” Subsequent trips attacked Y Drosgl, Foel Grach, Foel Fras, Yr Ellen, and Carnedd Llewylyn, They were not the first OCs to climb in Snowdonia as Captain H Broadbent RNR (1880-81) had climbed Mt Snowdon on Thursday 7th September 1911 (see left) while on a sailing expedition with a number of members of staff in his yacht Inyala. On 11th and 12th July 1941 cadets Slater and Brooks climbed to the summit of Snowdon in their normal reefers and without any waterproof clothing. Brooks’s report of the climb from The Cadet is reproduced below. It turned out that Brooks had appendicitis. Two days later his appendix was removed. In 1942 cadets formed the Conway Mountain Climbing Club and parties of six to eight cadets began regular, unsupervised, weekend expeditions into the mountains staying at the youth hostel at Idwal Cottage by Llyn Ogwen. Fraser MacKenzie (41-42) led its first expedition on 30th May taking a bus to Llanberis and then walking across to Idwal via Nant Peris, Y Garn, and Bristley Ridge.
