THE ARCHDEACONS’ FORUM for the Church of England and the Church in Wales Archdeacons’ News Bulletin no. 41 February 2019 from Norman Boakes Archdeacons’ National Development Officer It was wonderful to see so many archdeacons at the national conference Dealers in Hope in January. I think it was our largest attendance for very many years and the atmosphere and collegiality were inspiring and affirming. We were also blessed with very good speakers. The worship framework offered by Hopeweavers really did weave prayer, worship and hope through the conference. Thank you to all those who attended and participated so fully and thank you also to those who have shared their reflections on the conference already. If there is anything you would like the Forum Executive to consider when we review the event and start the planning for the next one, please send it to me by the end of February. In case anyone is interested, Jessica Martin has sent me an electronic copy of her address Hope, Desire and the Unexpected which she gave during our Closing Eucharist. If you would like a copy, just let me know. For those of us with Welsh connections, this year is one of those rare occasions when we can celebrate St David’s Day outside of Lent. Whatever you are planning for Lent, I hope it will be a time which allows for space and renewal, and an opportunity to continue reflections on how we may better be Dealers in Hope. With all good wishes and prayers, Norman [email protected] 023 8076 7735 * * * * * 1 A reminder – in this newsletter, if something has a purple heading and a black text, it is new material; if it has a black heading and grey text, it has been here before.

  • Diocese in Europe's 2019 Annual Review
Annual Review 2019 Message from Our Bishops Welcome to the Diocese in Europe’s 2019 Annual Review. We are delighted to present a Review covering the life of the Diocese over the past twelve months, produced as an issue of European Anglicans, our new Diocesan publication launched this summer. People across the length and breadth of the Diocese have again made possible the stories and the content that have gone into this Review, and for this we are truly grateful. Clearly, there are more highlights, reflections and achievements than there is space to acknowledge. The Review is a tour d’horizon of selected stories and images drawn from the published content of the Diocesan website, and our Bishops’ blogs over the course of this year. We hope you will enjoy them once more here. An important theme of our efforts this year has been consolidation. Among these include continued work to secure our long-term financial position. We are thankful for the increased contributions this year from chaplaincies to our common fund, and we welcome significant steps on future common funding arrangements. We have also been successful in the award of further strategic funding from the Church Commissioners that will provide us with more full-time stipendiary Archdeacons. Our new central senior staff have now been in post for a year: Andrew Caspari as Diocesan Secretary/Chief Operating Officer; Susan Stelfox as Head of Finance; and Damian Thwaites as Diocesan Bishop’s Attaché to the European Institutions and Director of Communications. We have also welcomed Grace Fagan in November, who has succeeded Andrea Watkins as Diocesan Safeguarding Adviser.

  • The Official Chess Yearbook 2010 Foreword
English Chess Federation The Official Chess Yearbook 2010 Foreword I played chess actively for a decade, racking up hundreds of games every year. Although my fanatical playing days are behind me, the welfare of chess, both in England and internationally, is still an overriding passion for me. After my election in 2009, I was determined to use the ECF Presidency as a force for good throughout the chess community. My predecessor Gerry Walsh made enormous advances in promoting the English game and its players all over the world and I hope to be able to continue this work. However, it is no secret that the domestic situation has deteriorated recently and this will be the focus of my attention. England is still a significant chess power and I believe the casual attitude of merely 'punching above our weight' is no longer relevant. The stunning successes of the Staunton Memorial and the London Chess Classic proved the country is capable of staging magnificent world class events and it is essential we build on this in the coming years. We have an amazing array of wonderfully talented players, at every level of the game, and their passion and enthusiasm can only be inspiring for those that work to enhance the situation for chess. I cannot promise miracles but I will promise to listen to any individual, club, league or tournament that has anything to say. I am travelling extensively to meet people, within the chess community, government and business, to establish relationships which can be used in order to further the ambitions of the ECF and its members.
