  • This 2008 Letter
The Most Reverend and Right Hon the Lord Archbishop of Canterbury & The Most Reverend and Right Hon the Lord Archbishop of York July, 2008 Most Reverend Fathers in God, We write as bishops, priests and deacons of the Provinces of Canterbury and York, who have sought, by God’s grace, in our various ministries, to celebrate the Sacraments and preach the Word faithfully; to form, nurture and catechise new Christians; to pastor the people of God entrusted to our care; and, through the work of our dioceses, parishes and institutions, to build up the Kingdom and to further God’s mission to the world in this land. Our theological convictions, grounded in obedience to Scripture and Tradition, and attentive to the need to discern the mind of the whole Church Catholic in matters touching on Faith and Order, lead us to doubt the sacramental ministry of those women ordained to the priesthood by the Church of England since 1994. Having said that, we have engaged with the life of the Church of England in a myriad of ways, nationally and locally, and have made sincere efforts to work courteously and carefully with those with whom we disagree. In the midst of this disagreement over Holy Order, we have, we believe, borne particular witness to the cause of Christian unity, and to the imperative of Our Lord’s command that ‘all may be one.’ We include those who have given many years service to the Church in the ordained ministry, and others who are very newly ordained. We believe that we demonstrate the vitality of the tradition which we represent and which has formed us in our discipleship and ministry – a tradition which, we believe, constitutes an essential and invaluable part of the life and character of the Church of England, without which it would be deeply impoverished.

HECTOR SCERRI ECUMENISM IN THE ARCHDIOCESE OF MALTA DURING THE EPISCOPATE OF ARCHBISHOP JOSEPH MERCIECA (1976–2007) A b s t r a c t. The long episcopate of Mgr Joseph Mercieca, Archbishop of Malta from 1976 to 2007, is characterized by the fruitful application and implementation of the Second Vatican Council in this European nation, at the southernmost tip of the European Union of which it has been a member since 2004. This research article studies the gradual development of the Ecu- menical Movement in this predominantly Catholic nation from the years immediately following the Council, right through the many initiatives during the period of Mercieca’s leadership of the Church in Malta, particularly the establishment of a Diocesan Ecumenical Commission on a sure footing, the collaboration with other Churches and ecclesial communities, the two pastoral visits of Pope John Paul II and the celebration of a Diocesan Pastoral Synod in the concluding years of his episcopate. This article serves as a case study on the genesis and the subsequent develop- ment of ecumenical relations in a local Church, the ecumenical initiatives taken over the years, and the way forward in this important pastoral dimension of an extrovert Church. Key words: ecumenism; Malta; Archbishop Joseph Mercieca; diocesan ecumenical commission; ecumenical relations. • Diocese in Europe's 2019 Annual Review
Annual Review 2019 Message from Our Bishops Welcome to the Diocese in Europe’s 2019 Annual Review. We are delighted to present a Review covering the life of the Diocese over the past twelve months, produced as an issue of European Anglicans, our new Diocesan publication launched this summer. People across the length and breadth of the Diocese have again made possible the stories and the content that have gone into this Review, and for this we are truly grateful. Clearly, there are more highlights, reflections and achievements than there is space to acknowledge. The Review is a tour d’horizon of selected stories and images drawn from the published content of the Diocesan website, and our Bishops’ blogs over the course of this year. We hope you will enjoy them once more here. An important theme of our efforts this year has been consolidation. Among these include continued work to secure our long-term financial position. We are thankful for the increased contributions this year from chaplaincies to our common fund, and we welcome significant steps on future common funding arrangements. We have also been successful in the award of further strategic funding from the Church Commissioners that will provide us with more full-time stipendiary Archdeacons. Our new central senior staff have now been in post for a year: Andrew Caspari as Diocesan Secretary/Chief Operating Officer; Susan Stelfox as Head of Finance; and Damian Thwaites as Diocesan Bishop’s Attaché to the European Institutions and Director of Communications. We have also welcomed Grace Fagan in November, who has succeeded Andrea Watkins as Diocesan Safeguarding Adviser.
