Alosa Fallax (Lacépède, 1803) in German and Adjacent Waters of the Baltic Sea
Not to be cited without prior reference to the authors ICES Annual Science Conference 2004 CM 2004/S:08 Use of Estuarine and Freshwaters Habitats and the way that Freshwater and Diadromous Fish use Them Status of the anadromous twaite shad Alosa fallax (Lacépède, 1803) in German and adjacent waters of the Baltic Sea R. Thiel, P. Riel, R. Neumann and H. M. Winkler ABSTRACT The status of twaite shad in German and adjacent waters of the Baltic Sea was investigated based on the analysis of ichthyological museum collections, historical commercial catch statistics, recent catch records from commercial and recreational fishery and research hauls with different trawls from August 2003 to July 2004. 42 % of the historical records of twaite shad were estimated in subdivisions 24, whereas 21 % were registered in subdivision 26. A. fallax was mainly distributed within the areas of Pommeranian Bay and Pommeranian coast, Szczecin Lagoon, Bay of Gdańsk, Vistula Spit, Vistula Lagoon, Kuršiu Spit and Kuršiu Lagoon. Twaite shad was an important commercial species in those areas during the last quarter of the 19th and the first half of the 20th century. The annual catches of twaite shad in the Southern Baltic declined sharply In the 1950s. The mean annual catch of twaite shad amounted to 90 982 kg for the entire Southern Baltic Sea between 1891 and 1960. About 47.9 % of that value were contributed by subdivision 26, comprising the areas of Gdańsk Bay, Vistula Lagoon/Vistula Spit and Kuršiu Lagoon/Kuršiu Spit. The proportion of subdivision 24, comprising the areas of Pommeranian Bay/Pommeranian coast and Szczecin Lagoon, amounted to 37.5 %. -

Even as a town in the early stage of its development, has merged in itself influ- ences of many cultural circles, which can be traced today by examining an archaeological artefacts. With a view to this phenomenon, the aim of this article is the presentation and analysing of construction of 10th century atypical hull fragments of the early medieval clinker-built boats from the archaeological site no. 3 in Wolin. Examined relics consists of four constructional groups – keel made of pine wood, upper strakes with oarports, planks of unusual cross-sectional shape and these with painted external side. They are a part of a set of 80 shipbuilding elements secondary used in the constructions of harbour quays, recorded during archaeological excavations conducted in 2012-2013. The whole observation is embedded on the wide comparative background enabling indication of similar objects – e.g. the finds dis- covered off the coast of the south Baltic zone and today’s Denmark, Norway and Sweden. Furthermore, the study aims to emphasize the high research value of the heterogeneous set of secondary used planks. On the basis of the observed technical aspects such as raw material, caulking, planks cross-sections, holes for the oars or treatment of the outer sides, there was noted many similarities to the wrecks char- acteristic for both the lands dominated by Slavs and Scandinavians. -

Low Sea Level Occurrence of the Southern Baltic Sea Coast
International Journal Volume 4 on Marine Navigation Number 2 and Safety of Sea Transportation June 2010 Low Sea Level Occurrence of the Southern Baltic Sea Coast I. Stanisławczyk, B. Kowalska & M. Mykita Instytut Meteorologii i Gospodarki Wodnej, Oddział Morski, Gdynia, Poland ABSTRACT: The level of 440 cm is defined as the upper limit of low sea level. This value is also accepted as the warning level for navigation, according to the NAVTEX. The low sea levels along the southern Baltic Sea coast were analyzed in the years 1955 – 2005. Lowest values recorded ranged from 309 cm in Wismar to 370 cm in Kołobrzeg. The phenomenon was chiefly generated by hurricane like offshore winds. Extremely low levels were not frequent, their occurrence did not exceed more than 0,3% in Świnoujście and not more than 1% in Warnemünde. In summer months these phenomena occurred extremely seldom, they were more fre- quent in the western, than in the eastern part of the coast. Long-term variation and statistical analysis was pre- sented. Probability of low sea levels occurrence was calculated by Gumbel method and percentile distribution for 4 gauge stations was analyzed. The calculations revealed that, for instance, in Warnemünde once in 20 years the minimum sea level can be as low as 358 cm. 1 INTRODUCTION gauges in Wismar, Warnemünde, Sassnitz, Świnoujście and Kołobrzeg. Determining Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers in Surface Waters of Western Pomerania Using Gas Chromatography with Electron Capture Detection
Pol. J. Environ. Stud. Vol. 24, No. 3 (2015), 961-968 DOI: 10.15244/pjoes/34010 Original Research Determining Polybrominated Diphenyl Ethers in Surface Waters of Western Pomerania Using Gas Chromatography with Electron Capture Detection Marlena Byczkiewicz*, Maciej Jabłoński** Institute of Chemistry and Environmental Protection, West Pomeranian University of Technology, Al. Piastow 42, 71-065 Szczecin, Poland Received: 10 October 2014 Accepted: 29 December 2014 Abstract We show how to determine polybrominated diphenyl ethers in aqueous samples using liquid-liquid extraction and gas chromatography with electron capture detection (LLE-GC-μECD). This method, due to its simplicity, low limits of determination (7-9 pg/L), high accuracy, relatively low costs, and high recovery coef- ficients for all of these PBDEs (86-92%), offers enormous benefits for routine analyses of PBDEs. The devel- oped method was applied to surface water samples collected from different sampling points in western Pomerania. Keywords: polybrominated diphenyl ethers, surface water, gas chromatography, liquid-liquid extrac- tion Introduction the transfer and dissemination of PBDEs in the environ- ment. Particularly toxic are the following PBDEs: BDE-28, Polybrominated diphenyl ethers (PBDEs) are classified BDE-47, BDE-99, BDE-100, BDE-153, and BDE-154. as persistent organic pollutants. They are added to plastics, Most of these congeners are part of a commercial prepara- paints, coatings, and textiles, as well as resins and poly- tion to delay the combustion process – pentaBDE [3]. meric materials to reduce their flammability without the PBDE solubility in water decreases with increases in formation of chemical bonds between the additives and the the number of bromine atoms in the molecule, and the polymeric materials [1-4]. -
