Submitted to: USDA/FAS GRAIN AND FEED DIVISION SOUTH AGRICULTURAL BUILDING 14TH & INDEPENDENCE AVES. S.W. WASHINGTON, D.C. 20250-1000 Submitted by: David McClellan USDBC Regional Marketing Representative Date: March 3, 2008 GULFOOD 2008 TRADE SHOW REPORT P. 2 GULFOOD 2008 TRADE SHOW FEBRUARY 24-27, 2008 IN DUBAI, U.A.E. USDBC REPRESENTATIVES Rodrigo Yanez, Yanez International Commodities Mark Kirsten, Kirsten Company LLC David McClellan, USDBC Regional Representative Introduction: The Gulfood trade show is the largest food trade show in the Middle East, and is becoming a significant food show on an international scale. Gulfood 2008 featured 70 national pavilions and 1,955 direct exhibitors representing 2,965 companies (60% food & drink, 40% hospitality and food processing equipment) from 72 countries, and was visited by over 39,000 trade attendees from 140 countries. The show’s rapid growth reflects Dubai’s and the Middle East region’s increase in wealth and in demand for food and food related products, especially from the many new hotels and restaurants in Dubai. The show is also benefiting from the growing reluctance of many business people in the region to travel to Europe and the US to visit the major food shows there which they have traditionally attended. The government of Dubai sees trade shows as an important factor in the city’s quest to become a major international hub of business and tourism. The GULFOOD 2008 TRADE SHOW REPORT P. 3 organizers of Gulfood plan to again expand the exhibition area in the 2009. Next year’s Gulfood dates will be Feb. 23-26, 2009. Trade Show Evaluation: The USA pavilion was again the largest national pavilion in the Gulfood show with 77 exhibitors. The US Dry Bean Council and the USA Dry Pea & Lentil Council each paid for a booth space and coordinated to create a USA Legumes booth large enough for two meeting tables along with a full display of US dry beans, lentils, dry peas and garbanzos. The USA Legumes booth received a steady stream of trade visitors, especially during the first two days, and took a record 249 trade leads during the 4-day show. Strong demand for legumes combined with the weak dollar convinced many buyers to contact US suppliers for perhaps the first time ever. Buyers were clearly worried they would not get the legumes they needed from their traditional suppliers. The show offered an excellent opportunity for our exporters to start working with traders, wholesalers, packagers and canners in the region. Of the 249 trade leads taken at the show, 62 were rated at very high or high importance i.e. likelihood to buy. Leads were taken from companies from 36 different countries. The Gulfood show will continue to grow along with opportuinities in the region for our exporters. We recommend that both USDBC and USADPLC again exhibit together in the 2009 edition.
