In ’s indigenous architecture the door was a defining feature of the urban built Derives from the Kuwaiti word meaning small-detailed object(s), usually beads and other environment and often the most elaborate element of residential buildings that would have been jewelry items. The choice of nimnim reflects our passion for defining even the smallest details visible to the public eye. Bearing ornaments and carvings imbued with aspects of local custom in a design and culture, an example of this unique element in the old town would have been the bab-bu- khokha. The choice of bab reflects our belief in the importance of defining space via architectural elements that are both functional and expressive, much in the same way our ancestors did – Often, the use and design of doors in architectural planning is minimized. However, we regard thereby reflecting an intuition and ingenuity which we seek to sustain through our design work the door as a major element; being the threshold between the interior and exterior space of any in the present. environment.

4 5 JASSIM ALSADDAH The Team Is a Kuwait-based architect who obtained his diploma Jassim AlSaddah, Tareq Hashim, (RIBA II) at the Architectural Association (AA) in London in 2008. Following this, Jassim took part in internships as Assistant Designer with Mishari AlNajjar, Yolla Ali, Daniel Yalung, Milk Studio Architects in London and Masafa in Kuwait as well as Jarmine Dela Cruz, Manaf AlNafouri, freelancing as a Graphic Artist and an Architect for small-scale projects. Karim Yousef, Ahmad AlKhateeb, In 2010, Jassim established Bab.nimnim Design Studio. Dina Mohamed Shaaban, Riya Villarosa The company’s first commission was to create the Al Saddah mosque a milestone for its makers and a new design standard in the local market.

Since then the company continues to build on its initial success by maintaining a holistic approach to design: from context to site, architecture to interior, object design to detailing and finishing.

ABOUT Terrazzo platforms, carpets reminiscent of lakes, and blush peach screens are some of the overall elements and materials that make up this new concept store and restaurant in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia.

DESIGN Babnimnim was commissioned to create the identity along with the SUMMARY interiors of the store/restaurant hybrid from concept to implementation. The name chosen for the project, Sum+Things, is indicative of a collection of items and flavours presented within a cohesive package.

LOCATION Riyadh, Saudi Arabia

The platformed display zone can have multiple compositions from mobile blocks and detachable marble shelves. The retail experience covers the front half of the ground floor and extends with a terrazzo staircase that emerges from the display landscape to the mezzanine level. Hidden behind the landscape of the home accessories boutique is the restaurant which occupies the back half of the space and the mezzanine. The seating arrangements vary from dining tables and chairs, to a more relaxed lounge setting. This space is differentiated from the rest of the interior with the use of a plush custom made carpet that gradates from deep blues to sandy peaches. The carpets are populated with various lighting poles, mimicking bamboo shoots, that create an additional sense of intimacy within the expansive space.

ABOUT Tucked away in the basement of Crystal Tower in Downtown , an undulating wall of skin toned tetrahedrons fold inwards leading shoppers to an arcade dedicated to start up boutiques. The name Peristyle is a nod to roman or Greek arcades lined with columns, while also relating to fashion in the abstract scenes. .

DESIGN The carved entrances, along with custom made brass lighting SUMMARY fixtures drop from a faceted ceiling mimicking stalactites usually found in caves. This is meant to enhance the arcade’s location within the basement of the tower, the rock like walls appear to be a result of the process of excavation for crystals.

The walls facing the mall are kept solid, adorned with glass reinforced gypsum tetrahedrons painted in varying shades of nudes. The store fronts are kept minimal, standing in stark contrast with the outer wall of the arcade. This allows for each STATUS Completed shop tenant to display their items as they see fit, while also allowing equal opportunity for exposure as visitors only get to experience the shops once they walk past the undulating carved wall.

ABOUT Food & Beverage Concept (local to Kuwait), Loft Kitchen and Ristretto Coffee & Community are two entities that coexist within the same space. Located in the heart of Kuwait City. The high ceiling space is in a prominent location that is easily visible from the mall and the street itself.

DESIGN The mission of the space is to provide a welcoming space SUMMARY where people from all over the city can come in to enjoy a meal prepared from the finest and freshest ingredient complemented with a fine cup of freshly roasted and brewed coffee.

36 37 Having two distinct elements that could potentially operate independently of each other in other locations was the main approach to designing the space configuration for this specific location. Ristretto acts as a central bar that could cater to both it's own clients and the users of Loft Kitchen. The bar is housed in an extruded mass that virtually slices up the space into two parts, it's location closer to the store front means that the remainder of the store is left open allowing for both spaces and programs to bleed into each other creating a cohesive and unified entity.

38 39 40 41 ß Custom Light Fixture - The cork ceiling acts as an acoustic buffer for the open space, the coffee bar punctures this sloped ceiling from which various clusters of the lighting element emerge, arranged around the coffee bar in a radial manner. Each cluster of lighting has different formations and lengths creating a dynamic and intricate formation of descending light tubes.

42 43 44 45 à Coffee bar seating - The stagelike setting allows for greater social interaction and a greater number of seats. The top level of the seating is made out of an upholstered alcove that fully envelops the corner of the store.

ABOUT Especially at times when technology and modern living seem to be outpacing Kuwaitis’ appreciation for their unique heritage, experiencing a culture through its food is one way of positively reinforcing a nation’s identity while introducing it to taste buds both foreign and familiar. Dar Hamad Restaurant, therefore, acts as a ‘gift’ of sorts

DESIGN In contrast to the traditionally inspired “dowry box” exterior, the SUMMARY interior is rich in color and contains patterns that oscillate in an enthusiastic nod towards the future. So while older-generation Kuwaitis will appreciate the structure’s familiar elements, younger generations can revel in the contemporaneity of where life is headed for them.

Daleel Holding was designed to give a physical expression of the ABOUT company's logo via its folded surface elements which were utilized to create dynamism and energy. This attracts users into different parts of the office space further enhances smaller functions

The renovation of the beach front villa required a full interior re-finish ABOUT along with the addition of a pool house and landscape towards the beach. The Villa's main architecture elements were preserved and refinished to enhance the pre existing lines.

DESIGN Following the linearity of the original design, the additions SUMMARY of the pool house and the wooden louvers on the sea facing facadea employ a wooden louver system with metal framing. The stepped concrete landscape gently slopes down towards the sea end of the property line.

Beach side facade with the addition of the new pool house on the left. The wooden louvres are the new application above the newly added larger window frames, and the language of this mixture of elements is directly translated to the pool house. STATUS Completed

The balustrade is from the former house that was kept and maintained to a new finish.

ABOUT Villa #1 is a 6-person family home spanning 3 floors. The prominent feature of the exterior design is on the street facing façade, where a contemporary expression of the traditional mashrabiya (screen) which overlays the windows of two protruding volumes. The middle volume has a number of recessed multiple-sized windows that allow light in to the double-story reception area.

DESIGN Two inner courts – accessible from both basement and ground floor SUMMARY allow views of the swimming pool from the main dining and family areas. The main staircase that connects all floors is designed as a curvilinear object located towards the rear of the house

ABOUT The project introduces a unique challenge since the program for the villa requires having four separate units that would have four families, while still insuring that the overall mass of the building reads as a singular unit.

DESIGN To create a unified look for four town houses situated within one SUMMARY large plot of land, various design elements were employed to blur the line between each unit.

à Wooden Louvers - A vertical louver system conceals the main stairway in two of the townhouses, providing shade and privacy. 94 95 The plot of land is divided into four equal quadrants, two unit modules are mirrored along the horizontal axis of the site. This is done to maximize accessibility to each unit, while insuring each resident's privacy.

Two of the units have large terraces on the upper floor, these are partially shaded and concealed from the neighboring units with the aid of the wooden mashrabiya, that wraps along the unit's facade and folding above the terraces.

ABOUT The project compromised of three family villas projects, two of which are identical mirrored houses, while the third is the larger family house. Due to the project's location, a dense suburban area, privacy was a main factor in tackling the design and each unit's layout

ABOUT The Yard is a strip of commercial buildings that consists mainly of restaurants, coffee places and shops.

DESIGN Modernising and simplifying the aesthetics of industrial architecture in terms of massing SUMMARY and materiality is the main architectural language of the exterior facades. Materials like flatsheet metal, corten steel, corrugated metal, bricks, and concrete are applied to the facades with a reinterpretation of an industrial aesthetic. Each material is assigned to designated blocks of the facade breaking down the total elevation strip to non-homogenize the overall look.

ABOUT AlBahar Mosque is a modern building inspired by the traditional Mamluk architecture of Islamic Cairo, the mass is designed to respect the context of the land and the direction of Qibla.

DESIGN Inspired by the islamic dome pendetive “Moqarnas“ whose basic SUMMARY shape is an offset of a 45° rotation of a square shape around its centre. The idea is to reset these squares to their original size and orientation, and rearrange them in a way where one is facing Qibla, one is aligned with the plot it self, and one is north oriented to cast the most shadow on the northern facade.

ABOUT A renovation project meant to revitalize and update North Nugra complex in Hawally.

DESIGN The renovation project also called for the introduction of new retail SUMMARY spaces, in both the interior and exterior. In order to insure that the addition remains respectful to the original architecture while also studying the design trends of the 70's and re introducing them in the space in a modernized fashion.

ABOUT The International Investor (TII) has strategically transitioned as a group from traditional fee based investment banking activities, into a private equity focused group, whereby TII manages its own portfolio of assets.

DESIGN The design calls for an executive office for an investment company: The spatial experience SUMMARY for both clients and staff is energized by the flow of movement through the communal spaces – as defined by an overhead ribbon that meanders and merges with the reception walls and meeting room areas. The perimeter of these rooms are also composed of translucent glass walls - in order to allow light to wash over the subsequent walls and surfaces. This is further enhanced by a fritted reinterpretation of the company’s logo embedded in the walls, to create a heightened degree of privacy.

The underlying, unifying design concept is inspired by the Islamic belief in ABOUT the Oneness of Allah – symbolized through repeated use of the circle form.

DESIGN The overall sense of wholeness and continuity is further enhanced by the use of a single SUMMARY pattern and typography. The pattern- proliferated on several materials and surfaces such as woodwork, metal work, internal walls, mashrabiyas, minaret and dome - derives from a Damascan mashrabiya (screen) of sixinterlocking circles around a hexagon. The Koufi font type – while very modern looking – is one of the oldest forms of Arabic calligraphy. Here, it is used to inscribe the 99 names of Allah and Quranic verses on interior walls. The minimal color scheme of white, beige, lapislazuli and gold brass is apparent throughout the entire structure.

ABOUT As the name suggests, Cubed 3 Diwaniya merges three intersecting cubed volumes into a bespoke hospitality concept that is contemporary in feel yet serving the traditional functions of the typical Kuwaiti diwaniya.

DESIGN The primary space is the reception area where hosts welcome their guests. The secondary, SUMMARY larger volume - which overlooks a lower ground swimming pool - is the recreation area, where one can enjoy the view or socialize in a more casual setting. The smallest cubed volume is the servicing area with a kitchenette / dining spot and restrooms. The exterior of Cubed 3 Diwanya boasts a corten steel finished facade that follows on from the use of wood in the main residence – both elements reminiscent of traditional Kuwaiti wooden door designs with metallic studs, a prominent feature of indigenous architecture.

The outline typography used throughout is meant to create a balance of forms and lines coordinated into systems used to emphasize to brand's motto, to introduce a decentralized and alternative standard of beauty.

Baguettes and round brilliant-cut diamonds are organized as if they were captured mid-eruption around a central emerald-cut diamond.

The necklace is designed with special micro hinges allowing the diamonds to fit perfectly on any chest size. ALT-PLUME A ruby baguette is placed within on left side of the necklace, situated right above the heart.

This necklace symbolizes the subtle emotions of its wearer. Paradoxically, the necklace is moderately lavish. THE SOURCE COLLECTION
