It is interested in the similarity between identity and mythology, and the constant reinvention that both experience. It is interested in finding where myths intersects with individuals, societies, places, and other myths. The book attempts to create a panorama of landscapes both urban and rural, of figures ranging from alchemical spirits, animals from folklore, and gods of Greek, Egyptian, and many other descents. The poems frequently employ dramatic monologue in order to offer a voice to mythical figures. They focus primarily on content and imagery, favoring metaphor and simile. Sylph does not attempt to represent the entire body of mythology, but rather different figures that have intersected in a multicultural setting. There is nothing for him to do there but live and let the dunes learn the difference between man and mirage. The scorpion cools its armor in his shadow, the snake warms her skin by his bedroll, a mist of eyes guards the coals. His body is a gentler sun, but this too is a lie. When he awakens they will all burn together. We begged him for his story. He left only a map of where the water was sweet and marked ridges where roads wouldn't suffice. A boy chased him to the edge of the sand and the man said: “the story is a mirage, the one crossing your imagination is a stranger to you and me, and you will always forget him. My footprints are enough for the desert, who will swallow and hold them forever in its belly.” 3 Little Gods I remember darkened panes, water color faces that said, “you are disturbing the peace of this place. Go.” It's all about vision. It's all about revision. I died up north and disembarked, put new feet on new pavement, my rebirth a ritual I repeat at sunrise. So who stood there next to me with a pewter jackdaw clenched in his fist? Who praised Apollo's cafe, the coffee overpriced but their grape leaves authentic, the streets of Greece alive on their tongue for a flash? I want to pry them away, the little gods. I want

  • The Sea Program Notes
    ! Introduction It is interesting to consider that seventy percent of the Earth’s surface is water-covered. You never have to go far to find some body of water whether it be a lake, a river or the ocean. Growing up in Baltimore, Maryland I was only minutes from the Chesapeake Bay. Known for its seafood, particularly crabs, shipping and industry, as well as historic Navel battles the Chesapeake is the life source of the city and the eastern half of the state. I have fond memories of picnics at Fort McHenry watching tankers or cruise ships come in and out of the port, sitting on a pier fishing for crabs, and spending my summers on a sailboat. These memories remind me of the opening lines of Longfellow’s poem The Secret of the Sea, “Ah! what pleasant visions haunt me, As I gaze upon the sea!, All the old romantic legends, All my dreams, come back to me…” There are many great poems, stories and songs that have water or the sea as a central theme. Tonight I want to share with you a small collection of pieces from the flute repertoire that depict some of the many secrets! of the sea. Mythology says that they were the daughters of Titan and his wife Tethys. They were well known to sailors and sea farers as generally benign spirits who could be called on for safe passage in troubled waters or to aid in navigation. To cross one, however, was to be avoided at all costs, as their wrath could whip up a destructive tempest. In European folklore, Undines were said to be the itinerant spirits of bereft women; wounded through unrequited or lost love.

    The Four Elemental Races, they are influenced by the 4 temperaments almost completely. The Sylph, they're blessed by the wind and have features that are windswept, dwelling primarily in valleys and plains they are a nomadic bunch of folk that love stories and meeting new people. A bit flighty at times they hate being tied down to one location for an extended period of time. The Sylphs themselves cannot fly but are very agile and can move quickly and do impressive athletic and acrobatic stunts. They have a working relationship with Rocs and use them as beasts of burden and mounts. Gnomes, these moody and unsociable small folk are masters of rock and earth. Not beholden to any form of wealth they create expertly crafted statues or other items from various stone for little in the way of payment. Often for the Undine they give them golden or platinum statues or trinkets that won’t corrode in the water, for the Sylph they create giant markers as waypoints to be seen during flight Undine, also known as Merfolk. These unrivaled diplomats live primarily in large bodies of water or when on land in places that are humid and wet. Living in giant reef cities to a matriarchal society they enjoy an often quiet life. Merfolk for most of their life are able to form a pair of legs when the need to traverse on land arises. The Undine offer their services in trying to negotiate peace with the other races. The female are your atypical Mermaid, the men have more shark like features.

    11 In Which Yet Another Pompous Blowhard Purports to Possess the True Meaning of Punk Rock Lester Bangs All the shit they play on the radio today-it lacks the true meaning of rock, which is sex, subversion, and style. Rock 'n' roll is pagan and primitive and very jungle, and that's how it should be. The moment it stops being those things, it's dead. -Sex Pistols manager Malcolm McClaren (Kohut and Kohut 1994, 18) The kids want misery and death. They want threatening noises because that shakes you out of your apathy. -John Lydon of the Sex Pistols (Kohut and Kohut 1994, 101) Lester Bangs is the most celebrated critic in the history of rock. A wild man and visionary armed with a pugnacious attitude and original writing style, which he claimed was based on the sound and language of rock and roll itself (Bangs 1987, ix), he was an early champion of punk rock. According to Bangs, punk means rock "in its most basic, primitive form," and it has thus been around from the beginnings of rock 'n' roll. Here he expounds upon what he sees as the true meaning of not only punk, but of rock itself, delivering a manifesto for both: the essence is passion. Rock must be first and foremost "a raw wail from the bottom of the guts." Punk rock was hardly invented by the Ramones in Qyeens, NY, in 1974-5, any more than it was by the Sex Pistols in London a year or so later. You have to go back to the New York Dolls.

    THE BIRTH OF HARD ROCK 1964-9 Charles Shaar Murray Hard rock was born in spaces too small to contain it, birthed and midwifed by youths simultaneously exhilarated by the prospect of emergent new freedoms and frustrated by the slow pace of their development, and delivered with equipment which had never been designed for the tasks to which it was now applied. Hard rock was the sound of systems under stress, of energies raging against confnement and constriction, of forces which could not be contained, merely harnessed. It was defned only in retrospect, because at the time of its inception it did not even recognise itself. The musicians who played the frst ‘hard rock’ and the audiences who crowded into the small clubs and ballrooms of early 1960s Britain to hear them, thought they were playing something else entirely. In other words, hard rock was – like rock and roll itself – a historical accident. It began as an earnest attempt by British kids in the 1960s, most of whom were born in the 1940s and raised and acculturated in the 1950s, to play American music, drawing on blues, soul, R&B, jazz and frst-generation rock, but forced to reinvent both the music, and its world, in their own image, resulting in something entirely new. However, hard rock was neither an only child, nor born fully formed. It shared its playpen, and many of its toys, with siblings (some named at the time and others only in retrospect) like R&B, psychedelia, progressive rock, art-rock and folk-rock, and it emerged only gradually from the intoxicating stew of myriad infuences that formed the musical equivalent of primordial soup in the uniquely turbulent years of the second (technicolour!) half of the 1960s.
