Canadian Guiding Badges And Insignia Brownie Six/Circle Emblems Following the introduction of the Brownie program to provide Guiding for younger girls, and after the decision to base the new program on The Brownie Story, a further decision was made in 1919 to subdivide a Brownie Pack into smaller groups consisting of six girls. These smaller groups within the Pack were known as Sixes and were identified by a Six emblem bearing the name of some mythical fairy- like person from folklore. [Reference: POR (British, 1919)] The original Six emblems were brown felt; later versions were brown cotton with the edges bound in brown. In 1995, the term “Sixes” was replaced by the term “Circles”, and the shape of the emblems was changed as well. In 1972, three of the original twelve Six emblems were retired and in 1995 four new ones were added. After the ‘discovery’ of African pygmies in the 1860s, little people became a powerful way of imaginatively connecting to an inconceivably distant past, and the place of humans within it. Little people in fin de siècle narratives have been commonly interpreted as atavistic, stunted warnings of biological reversion. I suggest that there are other readings available: by deploying two nineteenth-century anthropological theories – E. B. Tylor’s doctrine of ‘survivals’, and euhemerism, a model proposing that the mythology surrounding fairies was based on the existence of real ‘little people’ – they can also be read as positive symbols of the tenacity of the human spirit, and as offering access to a sacred, spiritual, or magic, world. -

An Abbreviated History of Garden Gnomes Garden gnomes occupy that same odd niche shared by lawn flamingos and circus- animal topiary; the ultra-kitschy, flamboyant and just-a-little-ridiculous decorations that came to prominence in American suburbs throughout the 1960′s and then latched tenaciously onto our cultural sub consciousness. But unlike flamingos and topiary, gnomes have a long and storied history of folklore and myth to draw upon. Gnomes have been a part of western culture since at least the 16th century with the early writings of Swiss-born alchemist Paracelsus. For many of us, though, our knowledge of the history of garden gnomes really only extends back as far as that one Travelocity commercial. Which is unfortunate, really, because garden gnomes are really the “great grandfathers” of campy garden decor. The Celtic revival period gave birth to the paradox that still defines the Celtic image to this day, namely that the rurality, simplicity and spirituality of the Celts was to be admired, but that they were uncivilised, irrational and wild at the same time. Recent debates surround the concepts of “Celt”, “Celticity” and “Celtic” are also discussed in this thesis. The first part of this thesis focuses on Celtic history and culture, as well as the complexities surrounding the terminology and the construction of the Celtic image over the centuries. This main body of the thesis analyses the way Celtic elements in contemporary adaptations of the Arthurian narrative form the modern Celtic image. -

The Sea Program Notes
! Introduction It is interesting to consider that seventy percent of the Earth’s surface is water-covered. You never have to go far to find some body of water whether it be a lake, a river or the ocean. Growing up in Baltimore, Maryland I was only minutes from the Chesapeake Bay. Known for its seafood, particularly crabs, shipping and industry, as well as historic Navel battles the Chesapeake is the life source of the city and the eastern half of the state. I have fond memories of picnics at Fort McHenry watching tankers or cruise ships come in and out of the port, sitting on a pier fishing for crabs, and spending my summers on a sailboat. These memories remind me of the opening lines of Longfellow’s poem The Secret of the Sea, “Ah! what pleasant visions haunt me, As I gaze upon the sea!, All the old romantic legends, All my dreams, come back to me…” There are many great poems, stories and songs that have water or the sea as a central theme. Tonight I want to share with you a small collection of pieces from the flute repertoire that depict some of the many secrets! of the sea. The Four Elemental Races, they are influenced by the 4 temperaments almost completely. The Sylph, they're blessed by the wind and have features that are windswept, dwelling primarily in valleys and plains they are a nomadic bunch of folk that love stories and meeting new people. A bit flighty at times they hate being tied down to one location for an extended period of time. The Sylphs themselves cannot fly but are very agile and can move quickly and do impressive athletic and acrobatic stunts. They have a working relationship with Rocs and use them as beasts of burden and mounts. Gnomes, these moody and unsociable small folk are masters of rock and earth. Not beholden to any form of wealth they create expertly crafted statues or other items from various stone for little in the way of payment. Often for the Undine they give them golden or platinum statues or trinkets that won’t corrode in the water, for the Sylph they create giant markers as waypoints to be seen during flight Undine, also known as Merfolk. These unrivaled diplomats live primarily in large bodies of water or when on land in places that are humid and wet. Living in giant reef cities to a matriarchal society they enjoy an often quiet life. Merfolk for most of their life are able to form a pair of legs when the need to traverse on land arises. The Undine offer their services in trying to negotiate peace with the other races. The female are your atypical Mermaid, the men have more shark like features. -

Granting them the Oni gauntlet, a power relic that lets one to master and use magical weapons to dispose of the clan’s enemies. The onimusha is an archetype of the samurai class. Limit Breaks (Su): At 1st level, the onimusha receives the Limit Breaks (Oni Trance and Oni Weapon Technique). Oni Trance (Su): This Limit Break allows the onimusha to enter a trance that increases his prowess in combat, taking on the appearance of an oni warrior of ancient times. His type changes to Outsider (Native) and gains Fast Healing 2 and a +2 dodge bonus to AC bonus. These bonuses increases by 2 per four samurai levels after 1st. Upon activating this limit break, he can summon forth a weapon from his dragon arsenal. This limit break lasts for a duration of 1 round + 1 round per four samurai levels after 1st. This limit break requires only a swift action. Oni Weapon Technique (Su): This Limit Break allows the onimusha to use a weapon from his dragon arsenal at its full potential using a new technique with the weapon. This limit break is a standard action to activate and is different depending on the wielded weapon. If he does not have a weapon summoned, he can as a free action without spending soul points as part of activating this limit break. • Raizan: Lightning Blast (Su): With Raizan, the onimusha makes a single melee attack at his highest base attack bonus and if successful, deals an additional 2d6 points of lightning damage plus an additional 2d6 per four samurai levels after 1st.
