Map 44 Latium-Campania Compiled by N. Purcell, 1997 Introduction The landscape of central Italy has not been intrinsically stable. The steep slopes of the mountains have been deforested–several times in many cases–with consequent erosion; frane or avalanches remove large tracts of regolith, and doubly obliterate the archaeological record. In the valley-bottoms active streams have deposited and eroded successive layers of fill, sealing and destroying the evidence of settlement in many relatively favored niches. The more extensive lowlands have also seen substantial depositions of alluvial and colluvial material; the coasts have been exposed to erosion, aggradation and occasional tectonic deformation, or–spectacularly in the Bay of Naples– alternating collapse and re-elevation (“bradyseism”) at a staggeringly rapid pace. Earthquakes everywhere have accelerated the rate of change; vulcanicity in Campania has several times transformed substantial tracts of landscape beyond recognition–and reconstruction (thus no attempt is made here to re-create the contours of any of the sometimes very different forerunners of today’s Mt. Vesuvius). To this instability must be added the effect of intensive and continuous intervention by humanity. Episodes of depopulation in the Italian peninsula have arguably been neither prolonged nor pronounced within the timespan of the map and beyond. Even so, over the centuries the settlement pattern has been more than usually mutable, which has tended to obscure or damage the archaeological record. More archaeological evidence has emerged as modern urbanization spreads; but even more has been destroyed. What is available to the historical cartographer varies in quality from area to area in surprising ways. -

It is an image of Arethusa the Fountain nymph of the city of Syracuse. The die was engraved by Kimon of Syracuse, whose signature is on the hair band on the forehead. Dolphins circle around the head of Arethusa. It is the first great work of art with a facing head, "en face." At the height of Sicilian art between 415 and 400 BC there were only a few artists who could successfully undertake such a challenging task. LA VIA APPIA Storia Alla fine del IV secolo a.C. Roma era padrona di gran parte della Penisola e una delle grandi potenze del Mediterraneo, solo pochi gruppi etnici, a sud delle Alpi, restavano da soggiogare. L'Urbe stessa stava cambiando il suo volto tradizionale assumendo quello di una capitale, ricca di opere pubbliche erette dai suoi generali vittoriosi. Il Foro, il Campidoglio, erano luoghi dove si ostentava la potenza crescente della città. Solo la nazione Sannita sfidava ancora l'egemonia di Roma da sud; da Paestum all'Apulia la Lega Sannitica minacciava di prendere Capua, non lontana dai confini del Lazio. La Via Appia nacque in questo contesto, come una via militare che consentiva di accelerare le comunicazioni coi confini meridionali del territorio conquistato. La strada fu poi estesa man mano che altri territori cadevano sotto il dominio di Roma. Appio Claudio Cieco, il console, fu colui che rese celebre la funzione di censore per le grandi imprese di interesse pubblico da lui realizzate, ma il suo nome fu reso famoso dalla Via Appia che gli sopravvisse. Nel 1993 la Via Appia compie 2305 anni, Appio fece tracciare la strada all'epoca delle guerre contro i Sanniti, nel 312 a.C., da Roma a Capua, per una distanza di 124 miglia romane. Appio impiegò anche i suoi capitali personali laddove le tesorerie dello stato erano insufficienti. Al primo posto fra tutte le strade di Roma c'era la Via Appia, a suo tempo la più lunga, la più bella, la più imponente via che fosse mai stata tracciata in alcuna parte del mondo, al punto che i romani la chiamarono "Regina di tutte le vie". -

REPRESENTATION CHALLENGES Augmented Reality and Artificial Intelligence in Cultural Heritage and Innovative Design Domain Medma Touch, Feel, Think: Survey, Catalog and Sensory Limitations Franco Prampolini Dina Porpiglia Antonio Gambino Abstract The project is named ‘Medma Touch, Feel, Think – Technological retrofit of the Archaeological Museum of Medma–Rosarno for the 3D catalog of the exibits works on display and the possible use by subjects with sensory limits’. We have carried out the 3D survey of all the main finds with analytical photo– modeling techniques, their scientific cataloging on ICCD’s specifications, the creation of a website with a high interactivity content and an Application that allows the sharing of extended informations for blind people, through the combined use of analog 3D models and AR authoring software. A sustainable initiative, a driver for the technology transfer of innovation (often invoked, but rarely implemented), capable of generating ‘social empowerment’. The methodology can also be shared by small entities, but characterized by contents of high historical and cultural values, expecially if they are able to build–up a territorial network of high identitarian values. Greek Dramatic Monuments from the Athenian Agora and Pnyx
GREEK DRAMATIC MONUMENTS FROM THE ATHENIAN AGORA AND PNYX (PLATES 65-68) T HE excavations of the Athenian Agora and of the Pnyx have produced objects dating from the early fifth century B.C. to the fifth century after Christ which can be termed dramatic monuments because they represent actors, chorusmen, and masks of tragedy, satyr play and comedy. The purpose of the present article is to interpret the earlier part of this series from the point of view of the history of Greek drama and to compare the pieces with other monuments, particularly those which can be satisfactorily dated.' The importance of this Agora material lies in two facts: first, the vast majority of it is Athenian; second, much of it is dated by the context in which it was found. Classical tragedy and satyr play, Hellenistic tragedy and satyr play, Old, Middle and New Comedy will be treated separately. The transition from Classical to Hellenistic in tragedy or comedy is of particular interest, and the lower limit has been set in the second century B.C. by which time the transition has been completed. The monuments are listed in a catalogue at the end. TRAGEDY AND SATYR PLAY CLASSICAL: A 1-A5 HELLENISTIC: A6-A12 One of the earliest, if not the earliest, representations of Greek tragedy is found on the fragmentary Attic oinochoe (A 1; P1. 65) dated about 470 and painted by an artist closely related to Hermonax. Little can be added to Miss Talcott's interpre- tation. The order of the fragments is A, B, C as given in Figure 1 of Miss T'alcott's article. -

Eppure, pochissimi sono i siti delle ville romane in Campania scientificamente indagati e, anche questi, solo molto parzialmente; una gran quantità di scavi e scoperte occasionali sono inediti o solo insufficientemente pubblicati; assai carenti anche le ricognizioni di superficie; pochi gli studi specifici, e limitati a zone non molto estese. Certo, negli ultimi anni la situazione comincia in qualche misura a mutare, grazie anche ai maggiori investimenti economici degli ultimi anni, ai ritrovamenti avvenuti durante la realizzazione di grandi opere pubbliche e alla continua espansione edilizia che hanno investito la Campania, e alla importante e lodevole iniziativa, che assume già notevole rilievo per il Casertano e il Beneventano, della prof.ssa Stefania Quilici Gigli, che ha permesso la pubblicazione di alcuni fogli della Carta archeologica della Campania riguardanti in particolare la zona di Capua, la valle del Volturno e la Valle Caudina e, prossimamente, quella Telesina.
