Waqf-Institution Och Gazi Husrev Bays Bibliotek I Bosnien Och Hercegovina MAGISTERUPPSATS I BIBLIOTEKS- OCH INFORMATIONSVETENSKAP VID BIBLIOTEKS- OCH INFORMATIONSVETENSKAP/BIBLIOTEKSHÖGSKOLAN 2006:133 ISSN 1404-0891 Waqf-institution och Gazi Husrev bays bibliotek i Bosnien och Hercegovina SABAHUDIN HADZIC © Sabahudin Hadzic Mångfaldigande och spridande av innehållet i denna uppsats – helt eller delvis – är förbjudet utan medgivande. Svensk titel: Waqf-institution och Gazi Husrev bays bibliotek i Bosnien-Hercegovina Engelsk titel: Waqf-institution and Gazi Husrev bays library in Bosnia and Herzegovina Författare: Sabahudin Hadzic Kollegium: 1 Färdigställt: 2006 Handledare: Magnus Torstensson Abstract: This thesis is of an historical nature and deals with two institutions in Bosnia and Hercegovina: waqf and the Library of Gazi Husrev bay. These institutions are placed in a societal context which makes it easier to understand their origins, development and decline. The purpose of this thesis is to describe and analyze the history of the Library of Gazi Husrev bay and its specific characteristics as well as analyze the institution of waqf in a societal context. The questions posed by this thesis are: What is waqf and its meaning? What are its benevolent as well as hostile periods? How did the Library of Gazi Husrev bay and its mission develop? The thesis is limited to waqf in its societal context. The method used consists of a qualitative literature study with source criticism and hermeneutics as methods of interpretation. The study shows that waqf is an important societal institution which has roots dating back to early Islamic history, that waqf had/has great importance in the education of Bosnians and the development of society in general, and that it was/is a widespread phenomenon in Bosnia. The thesis also shows that waqf experienced a number of hostile and benevolent periods as well as a neutral one. When it comes to the Library of Gazi Husrev bay, the thesis shows the library’s arduous history, its mission as well as its role in the preservation of Bosnia’s cultural heritage. • Danish Cartoons and Christian-Muslim Relations in Denmark
Exchange 39 (2010) 217-235 brill.nl/exch Danish Cartoons and Christian-Muslim Relations in Denmark Jørgen S. Nielsen Professor and Director of the Centre for European Islamic Thought, Faculty of Theology, University of Copenhagen [email protected] Abstract Prior to the arrival of Muslim immigrants and refugees into Denmark in the 1970s and after, Denmark’s experience with Islam was partly through university-based research and partly through missionary activities. During the 1980s and 1990s both sectors gradually adapted to the settlement of Muslims in the country. In the 1990s the public political debate became increasingly heated, leading to a steady tightening of immigration and refugee policies. In this debate an Islamic dimension was starkly exacerbated by the events of 11 September 2001 and the arrival of a new centre-right government two months later. This was the environment in which the ‘Muhammad cartoons’ were published in September 2005, and in which the domes- tic and international crisis played out over the subsequent 6-8 months. But the events also encouraged the emergence of new Islamic organizations and new responses, both negative and positive, on the part of the churches. While the sharp public debate continues, new apparently sustainable structures of Christian-Muslim relations have appeared. Keywords Muslim-Christian relations, Danish church, Muhammad cartoons The publication1 by the national daily newspaper Jyllands-Posten on 30 Sep- tember 2005 of a set of 12 cartoons presented as ‘perceptions’ of the Prophet Muhammad sparked a crisis which swept round the world over the following many months and which still leaves echoes.

There are an estimated 175,000-200,000 Muslims in Denmark, making up 3.7% of the total Danish population (Ministry of Integration, 2006; OSI 9) [1]. Most are first- and second-generation immigrants. Over the past two decades, Muslim immigrants have come from Iran, Iraq, the Palestinian territories, and Somalia. In the 1970s, many Muslims immigrated from Turkey, Pakistan, Morocco or Yugoslavia (U.S. Dept. of State, 2006; quoted in European Parliament 99). Turks make up the largest group of Muslims in Denmark (IHF, 2005). Muslims constitute the second largest religious community in Denmark after the Lutheran Protestant Church [U.S. Dept. of State, 2006; qtd. in European Parliament 99]. [2] Labor Market Research by state employment agencies and Danish think tanks provides very little information about Muslims in the labor market, because ethnicity is often explicitly kept out of surveys conducted by the national bureau of statistics (Danmarks Statistik), state-subsidized insurance associations, and labor unions. When ethnicity is a criterion for research, questions regarding religious identity are still avoided (OSI 19). There are indications that Muslims do not excel to the same degree as native-Danish in the job market. According to the Open Society Insititute (OSI) Report, the majority of ethnic minorities possess less skills and qualifications that are valuable in the workplace (OSI 19).

  • Islam and Muslims in Denmark
ISLAM AND MUSLIMS IN DENMARK. AN INTRODUCTION Tim JENSEN Universidad de Odense Preliminary remarks Like other religions, Islam is not one ‘thing’, Muslims are a mixed lot, and answers to the question “What is Islam?” -- no matter if directed to texts, classical- canonical or others, to learned or unlearned Muslims, men or women, secularist or integrist, devout or non-devout -- are legion. Besides, answers depend on contexts and purposes, of those asking and answering. Consequently, it may be argued that approaching Islam in a non-normative and non-theological but historical cum anthropological way necessarily lead to the conclusion: There are as many Islams as there are Muslims1. Islam in Europe2, including what has been called ‘Euro-Islam’, is no exception to this. Even within discernable institutionalized ‘Islams’ in the EU, Islam come in many more than one shape. In EU in total and in the individual EU countries. The different kinds of European Islams are due differences of the same kind as mentioned above. Muslims in the EU and the European nation states come with various languages, educational, political, idelogical, socio-economical and religio- theological backgrounds, agendas and aspirations. Some are Sunnis, some Shi’ites, some Alawi. Some are Salafi, others Wahabi, others again maybe Salafi-Sufi. Some are well integrated, others not. The pluralism within Islam in the EU also has to do with the fact that the Muslim presence and communities in have different histories in the different countries. In some EU countries it goes way back in time, in others it is relatively recent, and in e.g.

Author’s Updated Preface Andrew G. Bostom, M.D. “Andrew Bostom has written and continues to write…I would say there is no one who is writing more scholarly, but accessible material about Islam in the world today, than Andrew Bostom” —*Dennis Prager, author of Why The Jews? The Reason For Antisemitism, and The Rational Bible: Exodus, and syndicated columnist, and radio talk show host. Monday, August 22, 2016, The Dennis Prager Show https://bit.ly/35wcXYG “To understand and elucidate the ‘something’ that is the core of classical Islam has been the mission of Andrew Bostom’s scholarship for well over a decade. A professor of medicine by education and training, Dr. Bostom has brought the uncompromising rigor of that discipline to the study of Islamic history and doctrine. It is the saddest of ironies that such rigor is sorely needed in an age of jihadist supremacism…In the best Western tradition, Bostom’s quest for knowledge is rooted in reason, applied gimlet-eyed to an assemblage of evidence drawn painstakingly from the historical record. The contributions of this approach have already been immense. Most notably, Bostom has edited two essential compendia: The Legacy of Jihad: Islamic Holy War And The Fate of Non-Muslims (2005) And The Legacy of Islamic Antisemitism: From Sacred Texts To Solemn History (2008). These collections, featuring accounts of Islam in word and deed for over a millennium, as well as the critiques of scholars of Islam — Muslim and non-Muslim — over the centuries, put the lie to conventional wisdom. Jihad, despite assiduous efforts to reinterpret its meaning and bleach away its history, originated as the mission to spread Islam by forcible conquest.
