At the conclusion of the third phase of TKAP in March 2011 this position had radically altered. There are many clear indications of how much we have all learned from being part of the Programme, and the positive difference it has made to the lives of vulnerable young people in our communities. The three phases of TKAP have enabled us to build our knowledge around the type of interventions that work in reaching vulnerable young people to prevent violence and to start to change attitudes and behaviours. The ability of the Programme to share what works and lessons learned across all those participating has been one of its strengths, and has resulted in some excellent projects and operational activities being adopted and adapted to meet local needs. We have compiled good practice examples and case studies from across the participating areas, and these are listed below covering all nine core activities, plus governance and partnership, undertaken in TKAP during 2010/11. -

It uses data from the National Dental Epidemiology Programme 2019 survey of 5-year-old children1. The profile is designed to help local government and health services improve the oral health and wellbeing of children and tackle health inequalities. In County Durham 248 5-year-olds (approximately 68.0% of those sampled) were examined at school by trained and calibrated examiners using the national standard method2. East Durham Area Action Partnership Better for everyone East Durham Area Action Partnership Annual Report 2020/21 Introduction The past twelve months have challenged us all in many ways. The Covid pandemic has changed how the council and Area Action Partnerships (AAPs) have had to work as many communities and local residents have struggled because of the restrictions that we have all had to follow. If there are positives we can take from this terrible situation it is that ‘community’ is alive and well in County Durham. Thousands of people have stepped forward and have taken action to ensure the most isolated and vulnerable have been looked after. The people of County Durham need to be applauded for their efforts. Many of those organisations that have been helping out have been supported by the AAPs who have provided funding to numerous groups enabling them to do their vital work. Some of this funding has come directly through the AAPs whilst other resources have been allocated from the County Councillors Neighbourhood Budgets. I’d like to take this opportunity to thank the AAP teams for their help and support in ensuring that our Neighbourhood Budgets have been making a real difference in local communities. The next year will be no less challenging but I am delighted to say that the AAPs are being given extra resources to help communities recover from the pandemic. There is also new funding to support the County Council’s Towns and Villages Programme and the AAPs will be playing a key role in ensuring this funding helps to improve communities across County Durham. -

Some of the fields at Blast Beach are among the best places to enjoy them, with plants like bloody cranesbill, dyer’s greenweed and devil’s-bit scabious creating a riot of colour in the summer. The patches of scrub that intersperse the grassland provide shelter for birds like grasshopper warblers. Listen out for their insect-like song. While the flowers are at their best in spring and summer, the fabulous cliff-top views can be enjoyed year-round. These views are quite different now to how they looked at the end of the last century. This stretch of the Durham Coast was once home to the biggest coal mine in Europe, and to some of the worst coastline pollution in the world. Buried under no less than two and a half million tonnes of colliery waste every year, the beach was a no-go area for people, animals and birds. Thanks to a massive clean-up project involving the National Trust and 13 partner organisations the vast majority of the waste has now been removed and wildlife and people are able to use the coast again. The grid reference for the car parking at Nose's Point is NZ436478. The nearest postcode for satnav is SR7 7PS. The magnesian limestone that underlies this area has given rise to a spectacular landscape of cream-coloured cliffs intersected by steep-sided wooded valleys, or gills. -

The A19 Trunk Road
THE CHARTERED INSTITUTION OF HIGHWAYS & TRANSPORTATION The A19 Trunk Road The A19 tends to live in the shadow of the more well known A1 it runs more or less parallel with. However, it is no less important to the region, serving the heavy industry and associated ports of Teesside, Wearside and Tyneside. Its journey from a single carriageway road linking coastal towns to modern day dual carriageway has been a painstaking process of over 45 years but has brought both economic and visual transformation to the North East. 1 A Broad History Today the A19 trunk road is a modern all-purpose dual carriageway running from the junction with the A1 at Seaton Burn, north of Newcastle, until it leaves the region south of Middlesbrough. It continues through North Yorkshire to Thirsk and, via a short link (A168), rejoins the A1 at Dishforth. The A19 itself continues as a non-trunk road to Doncaster. In 1952, the A19 was very different. It existed only south of the River Tyne and was a coastal route of single carriageway and relatively poor standard. Starting at South Shields it passed through Whitburn, Sunderland and Seaham, heading inland through Easington and then back out to the coast via Horden and onto Hartlepool. It then snaked its way through Billingham, Stockton, Eaglescliffe and Yarm. The improvements in our region towards the route we know today began at the Tyne Tunnel in 1967/8. The tunnel (£13.4m) was built with approach roads from the A1058 Newcastle to Tynemouth Coast Road (£6.5m) in the north and the A184 Gateshead to Sunderland Trunk Road (£3.5m) in the south.
