As such, those countries are the furthest from the UK and tend to have more exotic and unusual native species. Many of these species cannot be grown in the UK, but in slightly more temperate regions, some species will thrive here and be of great benefit to our native pollinators. One such example is Verbena bonariensis, native to South America, which is a big hit with our native butterfly and bumblebee species. The Southern Hemisphere contains a lower percentage of land than the northern Hemisphere so the areas included are most of South America (particularly Chile, Argentina, Ecuador and Peru), Southern Africa (particularly South Africa) and Oceania (Particularly Australia and New Zealand). A large proportion of the plants in this list are fully hardy in the UK but some are only half-hardy. Half-hardy annuals may be planted out in the spring and will flourish. Half-hardy perennials or shrubs may need to be grown in pots and moved indoors during the winter months or grown in a very sheltered location. The illustrations pro- vided by Burman in Rariorum Africanarum Plantarum are designated as the lectotypes of these names. Furthermore, an epitype for the name O. versicolor is also designated in order to avoid any ambiguity in the interpretation of the lectotype. Keywords: epitype, Linnaeus, nomenclature, typification Introduction The genus Oxalis Linnaeus (1753: 433) (Oxalidaceae R.Br.) is a very complex group of vascular plants and is found principally in South America and South Africa (Macbride 1949, Eiten 1963, Denton 1973, Lourteig 1975, 1979, 1980, 1988, 1994, 1995, 2000, Dreyer & Makgakga 2003, Oberlander et al. 2004, 2009, 2011, Nesom 2009, López et al. 2013). The genus comprises approximately 500 species distributed in two centres of species richness: South America (c. 250 species) (Lourteig 1994, 2000) and southern Africa (c. 210 species) (Salter 1944, Oliver 1993, Williamson 1999, Dreyer & Makgakga 2003), with the former being the putative place of origin for the genus (Oberlander et al. -

4 Oklahoma Native Plant Record Volume 9, December 2009 VASCULAR PLANTS OF SOUTHEASTERN OKLAHOMA FROM THE SANS BOIS TO THE KIAMICHI MOUNTAINS Submitted to the Faculty of the Graduate College of the Oklahoma State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy May 1969 Francis Hobart Means, Jr. Midwest City, Oklahoma Current Email Address: [email protected] The author grew up in the prairie region of Kay County where he learned to appreciate proper management of the soil and the native grass flora. After graduation from college, he moved to Eastern Oklahoma State College where he took a position as Instructor in Botany and Agronomy. In the course of conducting botany field trips and working with local residents on their plant problems, the author became increasingly interested in the flora of that area and of the State of Oklahoma. This led to an extensive study of the northern portion of the Oauchita Highlands with collections currently numbering approximately 4,200. The specimens have been processed according to standard herbarium procedures. The first set has been placed in the Herbarium of Oklahoma State University with the second set going to Eastern Oklahoma State College at Wilburton. Editor’s note: The original species list included habitat characteristics and collection notes. The first feast for bees, in the shrubland short of trees not breeze. Sun’s rays soon last longer in the days: Babianas, Chlorophytums, Geissorhizas, Gladiolius’s, Hesperanthas, Lachenalias, Moraeas and Trachyandras spread their cheerful gaze. Accompanied by annual daisies and bright gladioli filling the air with strong scents of honey - monkey beetles waste no time as they perch upon delicate flowers, lest they are caught in the season’s showers. As if to suggest this is the best nature sends small midge flies to pollinate in jest, and surround mammals to tease their bloody channels. Another month has come and gone - not long now for the raaptol and Micranthus which provide nectar for brown butterflies and painted ladies. Then is the last sequence of bulbs - the fine white-filled fields of chinkerinchees. Grasses’ hour is now soaking up the sun displaying beautifully crafted silhouettes till summers end. As if heaven sent delicate geophytes are still producing their charm, when botanists avoid the midday sun. Leaves simple, with parallel nerves. In- terminal in umbels florescences or axillary, cymes, spikes or (in Amaryllidoideae), or flowers solitary, bracteateand often with one or few spathes (in Amaryllidoideae). Flowers sometimes in 2 free bisexual, actinomorphic or zygomorphic, marcescent. Tepals whorls, sometimes with Stamens free or united into a tube, a conspicuous corona. 6, or some- times united into a false corona, often inserted at the mouth of the perigone-tube; anthers often versatile. 3-celled with basifixed, dorsifixed or medifixed, Ovary inferior, axillary placentas; ovules 1 to numerous per cell. Fruit capsular, dehiscing either loculicidally or irregularly, or fruit a berry. Seeds globose or flattened, sometimes winged. Distribution— Cosmopolitan, with c. 80 genera and around 1000 species. In Malesia only 6 genera are indigenous or naturalized, but many others are cultivatedin botanic and private gardens (see the list on p. 371). Taxonomy — The family is treated here in a broad sense, comprising the genera with an inferior ovary, i.e. excluding the Allioideae(= Alliaceae), which are characterized by a superior ovary. In Malesia there are no indigenous species of the latter family, which is treated elsewhere in this instalment (p. 375). The Agavoideae (partly with an inferiorovary and partly with a superior one) are also excluded. The family Agavaceae has one indigenous genus in Malesia (Dracaena, includ- ing Pleomele). In the Amaryllidaceae two subfamilies are hererecognized which are often considered to be distinctfamilies: the Amaryllidoideae (= Amaryllidaceae s.
