Wine Facts DOMAINE VACHERON Sancerre Blanc ‘Les Romains’ The Vacherons without question are Sancerre’s leading winemaking clan. From the family’s pioneering work in identifying and exploring the region’s top terroirs to their leading position in biodynamic viticulture, there are few if any artisans today in Sancerre as exacting or as respected. The estate’s peerless older vines, planted and cultivated by generations of family members, are cared for fastidiously. Yet it is the their single- vineyard wines, like ‘Les Romains’—terroir-based selections recalling the painstaking work of Burgundian monks in the Côte d’Or—that have shown the world the heights and complexity that Sancerre can reach. Sancerre red AOP Jean Colin A cuvee from our Ancestor! The influence of the Loire, the intimate knowledge of the Loire Valley subsoils and soils, a strict selection of the grapes and a meticulous work in the cellar are all symbolizing the depth and the intensity of Jean Colin’s quality. GRAPE VARIETY 100% pinot noir de Bourgogne TERROIR & FARMING It comes from pinot noir vines planted on clay-limestone soils. Many years ago, we chose to take the ambitious high road of ecological transition involving a reduction in the use of chemical products, the recovery of biodiversity, the preservation of the soil’s potential and the management of resources, particularly water. In 2019, our wine-estates has achieved HVE3 certification, a High Environmental Value farming certificate. We are now converting in organic practices under Ecorcert. WINEMAKING We choose to harvest the grapes at night in order to help to concentrate the aromas, the flavors and to control the oxidation of fruits. A cold pre-fermented maceration of 72 hours at 6°C takes place and encourages the extraction of colours and tannins. Afterwards, the wine ferments during 18 days from 18°C to 25° C. The « pigeage » and « remontage » (pumping-over) are carried out twice daily in order to extract the colour, tannins and intense aromas... A portion of the wine is aged in stainless steel tanks and the other portion in oak barrels (from the local forests of Tronçais and Bertranges) for 9 months where it undergoes its malolactic fermentation. Loire 1 Loire Following two reasonably straightforward vintages, 2011 was very challenging for many vignerons, particularly in Touraine and the Central Vineyards. Warm spring weather ensured rapid development in the vineyards, but during the summer months low temperatures and too much rain brought the threat of rot to grapes struggling to ripen. On 2nd May the village of Quincy suffered a significant hailstorm, which reduced the crop at Domaine de Chevilly to less than a third of a normal year. In over 20 years I have never tasted a range of Loire Sauvignon Blancs with such a variation of success. Very careful selection has been required as too many wines offered showed the tell-tale damp cellar and mushroomy characters of grey rot infection. We are very happy with the wines from our trusted growers; certainly Francis Blanchet felt that all his hard work was justified by the finished product,Pour “ moi la qualité d’un vin est intimement liée au travail dans la vigne”. Further west the later ripening Cabernet Franc and the Chenin Blancs of Anjou and Coteaux du Layon benefitted from the sunshine and warmth which returned in mid September. Stéphane Branchereau of Domaine des Forges professed himself very happy across his range, to the point that he felt some wines risked being almost too rich.
