EUROPEAN UNION United Europe was born after War World II Today it Comprises 28 states The official currency is the euro. EUROPEAN UNION EUROPEAN UNION ITALY Italy is located in the Southern Europe. It has got a population of 59.7 million inhabitants and its capital is Rome. Its Northern border is delimited by The Alps and the rest of the territory is surrounded by the Tyrrhenian, the Ionian and the Adriatic, seas, united in the Mediterranean Sea. Sicily and Sardinia are the main islands . The Vatican City and San Marino are inside the Italian Republic. Rome, which was the capital of the Roman Empire, was for centuries the political and cultural center of Western civilization. Our Region: Lazio Lazio is an administrative region of Central Italy, and Viterbo is one of its five main cities, among which there is Rome, the capital. The region is surrounded by mountains and stretches along the Tyrrhenian Sea. One of its main river is the Tevere. Province of Viterbo The province of Viterbo stretches from Rome to Tuscany, whit the Tyrrhenian Sea to the West and Umbria to the East. It has a population of about 300,000 and its capital is Viterbo, the area’s largest town whit approximately 60,000 inhabitants. The town is geographically at the center of the region. Know also as “Tuscia”, the province of Viterbo expresses the vivacity of an area in which the economy has been created by man rather than imposed on him. It is an where agriculture represents not only an enormous resource but also an essential part of local life, full of pride and kindness. Its centuries-old trade is geared to offer quality; its folklore remains alive in festivals and commemorative events. The whole area is studded whit historical and artistic memories. Gastronomy is also important here since farm products find their way from the fields to the many restaurant tables of the area in just a few hours. City of Viterbo The town has ancient origins (it is believed that Viterbo derives from the Latin Urbs Vetus, that is, the Old Town) and has a large medieval town center San Pellegrino Viterbo is historically known as the City of the Popes: in fact, in the thirteenth century, the Pope Palace hosted the Popes for many years and there were various elected Popes . D'ARCA From the 'Centro di Studi-della Microcitemia di Roma% Istituto d'Igiene dell'Universitd di Roma, Italia SUMMARY In the 1975 to 1976 school year, under the auspices of the Health Authorities of the Latium Region, the Rome Microcythaemia Centre carried out for the first time a partial screening survey of thalassaemia carriers among the students of the compulsory intermediate school in Latium. This work was the beginning of a new preventive school health service aimed at the prophylaxis of Cooley's disease. In 23 places investigated in Latium, 17 724 students were examined, 13 354 of whom were in Rome and 4370 elsewhere. The mean percentage of co-operation was 70% and the mean percentage of thalassaemia 2.42%. Thalassaemic students were invited to attend the centre for a check-up along with their families: about half had already come in by the end of June 1976. All students examined, whether normal or thalassaemic, have received written results of the tests. The screening survey aroused notable interest and obtained wide approval both at school and at home. The news of being thalassaemia carriers, even if not welcome, was never the cause of family tragedy. copyright. This investigation represents the preliminary steps of a study aimed to know the specific environmental features and dynamics prior to the eruptions of the "nenfri" of the Paleovulsini complex. The physico-chemical characteristics and some horizons morphological details such as the presence of roots fingerprint, the polyhedric angular and columnar structure suggest incipient weathering and pedogenesis. Moreover, the presence of nodules and the high salinity of deep horizons suggest the incorporation of pyroclastic material into a hydromorphic environment at the time of the eruptions, putting forward the hypothesis of a paleo-marsh under an arid paleoclimate. [email protected] | www.genius-loci.it ***GENIUS LOCI TRAVEL - The Real Spirit Of Italy*** Independent 'Self Guided' walking tour INTRODUCTION This is a moderately challenging tour which is suitable for experienced walkers with a good general physical condition. Through the extensive footpath network of the area, roughly following the traces of the Via Francigena, one of Europe’s most important ‘highways’ in medieval times, you walk from village to village, a full immersion in the world-famous Tuscan landscape, until arriving on the shore of Lake Bolsena, in the Etruscan heartland. This last part of the Via Francigena is perhaps the area where the intriguing history of the area comes most alive. Here, more than ‘only’ walking over a medieval pilgrim’s route you’ll walk through the heartland of the Etruscans, an ancient civilisation which flourished in this area before the rise of the Roman Empire. This area, now known as the ‘Tuscia’ area, is an area where the layers of history can all be explored: apart from the Etruscan heritage, of course the Romans left many traces here too, among which one of the best preserves amphitheatres in the ancient city of Sutri. In medieval times a number of fortresses where built in several places, while during the Renaissance Popes and other wealthy families from Rome built their villa’s here, often surrounded by superbly landscaped parks.

The Holy See PASTORAL VISIT TO VITERBO AND BAGNOREGIO BENEDICT XVI ANGELUS Valle Faul - Viterbo Sunday, 6 September 2009 [Video] Dear Brothers and Sisters, At the end of this solemn Eucharistic Celebration, I once again thank the Lord for having given me the joy of making this Pastoral Visit to your diocesan community. I have come to encourage you and to strengthen you in your fidelity to Christ, as the theme you have chosen clearly shows: "Strengthen your brethren" (Lk 22: 31). Jesus addressed these words to the Apostle Peter during the Last Supper, entrusting to him the task of being Pastor of his whole Church here on earth. Your Diocese has been distinguished for many centuries by a unique bond of affection and communion with the Successor of Peter. I was was able to see this when I visited the Palace of the Popes, and in particular, the Conclave Hall. St Leo the Great was born in the vast territory of ancient Tuscia. He rendered a great service to the truth in charity by diligently preaching the word, as his Sermons and his Letters testify. Pope Sabinian, the Successor of Gregory the Great was born in Blera; Paul III was born in Canino. The Roman Pontiffs chose Viterbo for their residence during the whole of the second part of the 13th century. Five of my Predecessors were elected here and four of them are buried here. At least 50 visited the city the last of whom was the Servant of God John Paul II, 25 years ago. These figures have historical significance, but above all I would like to here emphasize their spiritual value.
