TOPICS: Ritual & Celebrations / Sacraments of Initiation Registration after Masses at St. Luke, St. Bernard, Immaculate Conception Pastor’s Corner . . . ORDINARY TIME We entered into ordinary time, a season that extends until Tuesday before Ash Wednesday and after Pentecost towards Christ the King. Although this year, we live out the gospel of Matthew, the second Sunday is always taken from the gospel of John. John the Baptist’s description and designation of Jesus as the Lamb of God confirms in a profound sense the true identity of Jesus. When he saw him, John exclaimed, "Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world." He is the one of whom I said, “A man is coming after me who ranks ahead of me because he existed before me (John 1: 29-30).” In the end, he added, "...He is the one who will baptize with the Holy Spirit...Now, I have seen and testified that he is the Son of God (Jn 1:33-34)”. As John the Baptist points and leads us into the real Jesus by sharing his experience of not knowing him and seeing 'the spirit come down like a dove from the heaven and remain upon him,' (John 1: 32), he offers a reminder that holidays may be over for many and back to business as usual but for Catholics, the mystery of the incarnation is just beginning to unfold. For John, Jesus is the paschal lamb. He is depicted as the New Passover lamb whose sacrificial death on the cross brought deliverance from sin and reconciliation. The Johannine Gospel, a thinking community, specifically, presents the cosmic drama between God’s love for the world and the devil’s business that is, alienation from God, the destruction of Jesus - the incarnation of God in the flesh. The devil’s affairs has always been the promotion and the proliferation of the sin of the world. It looks like there’s battle between good and evil (so-called, religious dualism) but there’s none.
LAMB OF GOD Lamb is used as sacrificial victim in ritual passages such as Passover liturgy - the great national feast of Israel (Ex 12: 1-14) where the blood of the lamb saved the Hebrews and the flesh Passover communion meal. The annual rite celebrates the Israelites entry into Canaan and their establishment as people of God. It’s a commemoration of God’s saving act. Lamb is also used in temple sacrificial system offered in worship where sins are purged and penitent reconciled with God. Many of us will agree that the flesh of the lamb is a delicacy (Deut. 32:14). In fact, lamb chop is one of the best I had. Lamb is also mentioned in one of the songs of the suffering servant (Isa. 53:7-8) as a figure of innocence where the silent lamb is led to the slaughter. There was a sense of helplessness (Ps. 119). John is the only one in the entire New Testament who used the image and gave the title “Lamb of God” to Jesus which of course, has its allusions in the Old Testament. The startling image of Jesus as the lamb of God, a distinctive feature, highlights the notion of sacrifice. It provides a description derived from a weak, lowly and vulnerable sacrificial lamb ready for slaughter, rather painting a picture indicative of the society's status quo, that is, power and dominion. John truthfully acknowledged that he didn't know him before. Clearly, Christianity cannot be understood apart from sacrifice. In fact, there is no Christianity without sacrifice. The Lamb of God bears away our sins. The lamb of God lifts off the sin of the world. Let’s spend a brief moment clarifying the sin of the world. It is the condition, the social milieu and the fundamental state of affair more than the act. The sinful world is the structure of evil which inhabits us and affects us in this border town including the whole human race. The sin of our first parents which we call original sin (an inherited sin) brought us into where we are now which obviously, had a lasting residual effect. This struggle takes us back to the fall of humanity through our first parents Adam and Eve. Since then, there has been a competition between God and humanity. We became fierce rivals. We wanted to be like him. We tried to grasp divinity by becoming stars in our own right to no avail. The root, the origin and the source of all the troubles faced (local and universal) is pride, our inflated egos get in the way and the desire to be like God. The Sunday Worship/ Eucharist helps us get out of the prison of ourselves. A story is told about a penitent whose confession could hardly be heard by the Priest-confessor. He, in turn, told the penitent to summarize the confession in one word. The penitent said, pride! Father! Pride Father! That’s true! Pride is the root of all sins. The sin of the world is the refusal to believe in the infinite, eternal love offering gift of God through Jesus Christ. The sin of the world is the environment that promotes greed, lust, pride, sloth, disobedience, apathy, etc. Indifference Pastor’s Corner. . . The sin of the world is the disordered human desire to be like God by seizing divinity than accepting it as a precious gift. The endless struggle, the armed conflict, the social chaos and disarray won’t stop unless we turn and behold the lamb of God who takes away the sin of world.
POINTS TO PONDER: What is the sin of the world that I participate? What can I do to stop the sin of the world? Where do I see the Lamb of God in everyday life?
Day of Prayer for the Legal Protection of the Unborn Children On the sad 47th Anniversary (January 22, 1973) of the infamous Supreme Court Decision known as Roe v. Wade that legalized the heinous crime of abortion, we especially pray for the more than 50 million innocent unborn lives (who for many were nothing but a piece of tissue/cells...evil hiding under rights/priorities and wrapped with all excuses) that have been taken away and haven't had the chance to be born and lived in a country described as the land of limitless opportunities, as a result of a quick solution (an easy way out) to a complex moral dilemma. We include in our prayers the many confused men and women including parents seriously considering abortion at the present moment. We offer God's immense compassion, mercy and forgiveness to those who have committed this horrible act and are still struggling with the painful memory of loss... letting them know that there's no sin that’s unforgivable. We thank the pro-life movement for their absolute commitment to a non- violent protest and willingness to endure and face suffering, ridicule, embarrassment and shame that more often didn't matter at all so long as they can save the unborn... Whether or not the law is overturned in the coming years, in the end, the real victims are the innocents...the unborn, the mothers to be and those directly involved on it and the entire society. Ultimately, my body - my choice, is by far the strongest argument against the eternal battle for life as it irredeemably leaves no room for potential dialogue. No motive or circumstance will morally justify the
Pastor’s Corner. . . . deliberate (direct) killing of an innocent human being. Religious people, bound by the tenets of the institution, have a moral responsibility. And so, ignoring altogether this pressing socio-cultural-political-medical- religious-moral issue combined conceivably means (tacit approval). The pro-life movement exists to provide a voice for and from the unborn to the most vulnerable adult, offer support for the countless individuals whose back are against the wall and the aftermath - the terrible consequences in years to come. This movement emerged from the sidelines as a peaceful protest (not an armed struggle by any means) against a decadent society. As a sign of prayer and mourning for the millions of innocent lives lost and sympathy for those still grieving for the loss, 47 candles will be lit overnight at the Mother of life Grotto. Masses will be offered for peace and justice (for the legal protection of the unborn). This Wednesday, January 22, 2020, Wednesday is a day of prayer and penance for the legal protection of unborn children. Join us in the novena 9daysforlife!

Juan identifica a Jesu s como el Cordero de Dios que ha venido al mundo a remover los pecados del mundo. Este pasaje tiene cierta relacio n con la Cena Pascual, descrita en el libro del E xodo, antes que Dios liberara al pueblo de Israel de la esclavitud de las manos de los egipcios. Cuando Juan anuncia que Jesu s es el Nuevo Cordero que trae la liberacio n al pueblo de Dios, la liberacio n de la opresio n del mal y el pecado, significa que Jesu s se sacrificara para liberar a la humanidad. El profeta Isaí as anuncia al Cordero que sera degollado, ofrecido en sacrificio a Dios. Jesu s es el Siervo sufriente que derramara su sangre para la salvacio n de la humanidad. Las lecturas de hoy, nos dicen que, si queremos ser discí pulos de Jesu s, tenemos que tener claro quie n es realmente Jesu s para nosotros. Necesitamos tener claro cua l es su identidad y misio n para que seamos buenos discí pulos de Jesu s. Todo discí pulo de Jesu s, es un verdadero seguidor del Maestro y tambie n, un enviado que lleve la Buena Nueva a todos. El discí pulo de Cristo no solamente sigue el Evangelio de Jesu s, sino tambie n ayuda a otros a escucharlo, a aceptarlo y a practicarlo en su vida diaria. Cuando experimentamos esta luz en la misma Pasio n de Cristo, nosotros podemos ver el rostro de Dios iluminando a cada ser humano. Nosotros somos iluminados por el hecho de que Dios por su encarnacio n, ha unido a sí mismo, a toda creatura humana. Somos iluminados por Cristo, por el hecho de que no importa la circunstancia de las vidas de las personas, o independientemente de su edad, altura, color, raza, condicio n social rico o pobre, saludable o enfermo, etc., la vida de Dios siempre es necesaria en los seres humanos, es la manifestacio n de Dios, un signo de su presencia que muestra su gloria.

Como comunidad, Unidos a Cristo por nuestro bautismo, nuestra identidad de hijos adoptivos de Dios nos mueve la misio n de anunciar su Reino a todos los que nos rodean. Nuestra misio n es poner al servicio de nuestros pro jimos, los dones y carismas que Dios nos ha dado. Esforce monos y sacrifique monos por amor a Dios, a construir un reino de paz, justica, verdad y misericordia en nuestras familias y nuestra comunidad. Así , testificaremos que Jesu s es nuestro Dios y Sen or al dejarnos instruir por el Espí ritu Santo que mora en nosotros para ser sus servidores fieles. Juan el Bautista conoce la identidad y misio n de Jesu s y lo testifica con estas palabras: «He visto al Espí ritu Santo bajar del cielo como una paloma, y reposar sobre e l». Solamente por fe. Por la gracias del Espí ritu Santo podemos llamar a Dios Padre, “ABBA”. PADRE. Vivamos como Hijos de la luz y ofrezcamos a Dios nuestras vidas en su servicio. Oremos: Padre, dame apertura para que tu Espí ritu venga a mi vida. Te pido que enví es tu Espí ritu sobre el mundo, mi familia, la iglesia y mi corazo n. Permite que el Espí ritu me guí e hacia una comunio n ma s í ntima contigo. ¿Qué es la Renovación Carismática Católica? La Renovacio n Carisma tica Cato lica (RCC) es una corriente de gracia por medio de la cual el Espí ritu de Dios nos lleva a vivir de manera vivencial la realidad del Cuerpo de Cristo. La Renovacio n es una conversio n y entrega constante a Dios, una docilidad creciente al Espí ritu Santo. De allí que, para la Iglesia, la Renovacio n es un Pentecoste s actual para renovar la Iglesia de hoy. La RCC, es la Iglesia en movimiento. Segu n los Estatutos de la oficina de Renovacion Carismatica con sede en Roma (CARIS), aprobados por S.S. Juan Pablo II, nos dice que: “La Renovacio n Carisma tica Cato lica es un movimiento mundial, pero no uniforme, ni unificado. No tiene fundador particular, ni un grupo de fundadores como muchos otros movimientos. No tiene lista de miembros participantes. La Renovacio n Carisma tica es la reunio n muy diversa de individuos, grupos y actividades, con frecuencia del todo independientes unos de otros, en diferentes grados y modos de desarrollo, con diversos e nfasis; y que sin embargo participan de la misma experiencia fundamental y persiguen los mismos objetivos generales”. Esta experiencia fundamental es la efusio n del Espí ritu Santo –o bautismo en el Espí ritu–, que es una renovacio n de las gracias recibidas en nuestro bautismo sacramental, y que nos lleva a vivir la vida nueva en el Espí ritu.
¿QUÉ HAY SOBRE LAS METAS U OBJETIVOS DE LA RENOVACIÓN CATÓLICA CARISMÁTICA? Las metas de la Renovacio n Cato lica Carisma tica son las mismas metas y objetivos de la Iglesia misma, y se encuentran muy bien descritos en el prea mbulo de los Estatutos de CARIS. La Renovacio n busca la conversio n, salvacio n y santificacio n de toda la gente y su unificacio n dentro de una asamblea efectiva del pueblo de Dios (tomado de otra declaracio n de CARIS). La Renovacio n Cato lica Carisma tica quiere ver cada trabajo en la Iglesia sustentado en el discernimiento de los propo sitos y planes de Dios y no en nuestras propias ideas. He dicho ya que queremos ver vidas transformadas por el poder del Espí ritu Santo, aunque mientras la Renovacio n pone especial e nfasis en el papel del Espí ritu, tambie n esta centrada en Dios nuestro Padre y en Jesu s su Hijo, nuestro Sen or y Salvador. Es una Renovacio n Trinitaria.
HISTORIA La Renovacio n Carisma tica Cato lica (RCC) es el fruto de la inspiradora peticio n de la fundadora de la Congregacio n Oblatas del Espí ritu Santo, la hermana Elena Guerra, quien el 1895 solicito al Santo Padre Leo n XIII que se hiciera conocer la devocio n al Espí ritu Santo, que tanta falta le hací a a la Iglesia. Ella le pidio al Papa Leo n XIII, invitar a los fieles a redescubrir una vida segu n el Espí ritu Santo, para que hubiera una renovacio n en la Iglesia. La respuesta del Santo Padre no se hizo esperar, El Papa Leo n XIII destino a la Iglesia tres documentos sobre el Culto al Espí ritu Santo: 1º El Rescripto “Provida Matris Charitate”, el 5 de mayo de 1995, haciendo una invitacio n a los fieles a invocaral Espí ritu Santo, recomendando hacer una novena para prepararse a la celebracio n de Pentecostes. 2º La primera Encí clica sobre el Espí ritu Santo, “Divinum illud munus” del 9 de mayo de 1897 enfatizando Nuestra Fé con Padre Marco. . .2 especialmente: a. El Espí ritu Santo en el seno de la Santí sima Trinidad y su misio n entre nosotros, en la vida de Jesu s, de la b. Iglesia, y en el alma de los fieles (n. 1 al 25) b. La importancia del culto a la persona del Espíritu Santo (n. 26 al 33) c. La institucio n, por decreto, de una novena como preparacio n para la Fiesta de Pentecoste s (n. 34) d. El incentivo para que los “predicadores, pastores y directores de almas” no se descuiden de la tarea de instruir al pueblo en relacio n de la divina persona del Espí ritu Santo (n. 27) 3º La Carta a los Obispos, “Ad fovendum in cristiano populo” para reforzar los documentos anteriores. El Papa Leo n XIII, en la celebracio n Eucarí stica que marcaba el paso del siglo XIX al XX, durante la noche del 31 de diciembre de 1899 para iniciar el 1º de enero de 1900, entono el canto “Veni Creator Spiritus” consagrando el siglo XX al Espí ritu Santo, motivado por la hermana Elena Guerra, mirando hacia atra s a partir de nuestra presente perspectiva, los eventos de los u ltimos 100 an os revelan que Dios estaba movie ndose en y entre su pueblo, moldeando su proyecto (disen o) para el “siglo carisma tico”. “El siglo carisma tico empezo con el himno de invocacio n al Espí ritu Santo del Papa Leo n XIII, el 1º de enero de 1901el 25 de enero de 1959 en la calidad de Papa Juan XXIII convoca a un Concilio con esta oracio n: “Espí ritu Santo, vuestra presencia dirige la Iglesia hacia el camino correcto. Nosotros os pedimos, derramad la plenitud de vuestros dones sobre este Concilio Ecume nico. Renovad vuestros milagros en nuestros dí as, en mira de un nuevo Pentecoste s”. (cf. Ata Apostolical Sedis 51, pa g. 832). Juan XXIII destaca que, en la vida de Elena, “es notable co mo todo converge al cumplimiento de la misio n que de parte de Dios le fue confiada, de ser en nuestros tiempos el apo stol de la devocio n al Espí ritu Santo”. Los primeros cato licos en promover pu blicamente el movimiento carisma tico en el seno de la Iglesia Cato lica fueron William Storey y Ralph Keyfer, profesores laicos de Teologí a de la Universidad Cato lica de Duchesne en Pittsburg pensylvania. Unidos en oracio n pidieron un nuevo pentecoste s. A trave s de este retiro, los jo venes estudiantes renovaron su promesa bautismal y experimentaron una nueva efusio n del Espí ritu Santo donde se manifestaron los dones carisma ticos. El 8 y 9 de noviembre de 1967 se reunieron en Notre Dame, 90 personas para reflexionar sobre lo que estaba pasando en sus vidas. Podemos decir que e ste fue el primer grupo de oracio n Carisma tico Cato lico. Despue s de esta primera reunio n, su expansio n en los Estados Unidos y en Latino-Ame rica ha sido sorprendente. Estos grupos de oracio n son el movimiento laical ma s numeroso en el Ministerio Hispano Norteamericano. Actualmente la Renovacio n Carisma tica Cato lica cuenta con mas de 140 millones miembros en todo el mundo. Juan Pablo II, mayo 29 del 2004 «Gracias al movimiento carisma tico, muchos cristianos, hombres y mujeres, jo venes y adultos, han re-descubierto Pentecoste s como realidad viva y presente en su existencia cotidiana. «Deseo que la espiritualidad de Pentecoste s se difunda en la Iglesia, como empuje renovado de oracio n, de santidad, de comunio n y de anuncio» Estoy convencido que por mucho nuestro ma s importante regalo para la Iglesia es el Bautismo en el Espí ritu Santo. Como escribio el Cardenal Suenens en 196: “El alma de la Renovacio n – El Bautismo en el Espí ritu – Es la gracia refrescante de Pentecoste s ofrecida a todos los cristianos”. Esta gracia nos conducira a una personal y viva relacio n con Dios – Padre, Hijo y Espí ritu Santo – y nos ayudara a buscar la santidad. Con el bautismo en el Espí ritu Santo, vienen los dones espirituales o carismas, mismos que el Concilio Vaticano Segundo nos recuerda que son “muy conformes y u tiles a las necesidades de la Iglesia” (Lumen Gentium 12).
Compromiso Misionero Hay siempre la tentacio n de tratar de mejor aceptados por otros hablando menos de esas cosas que ellos encuentran incomodas. ¿A que cosas me refiero? Bautismo en el Espí ritu, Lenguas, Profecí a, Sanacio n, Evangelizacio n. Nunca debemos ceder a esta tentacio n – somos llamados a ser profe ticos y la vida del profeta no es fa cil. Somos llamados para servir en la Iglesia y los carismas que hemos recibido son aute nticamente cato licos, así que, aunque debemos ser sensibles con los dema s no tenemos excusas para comprometernos.
