May 9, 2021 Sixth Sunday of A New From 1895 to 1903 Leo XIII received 12 confidential letters from a named Sister Elena Guerra. Elena, who had founded a religious community called the Oblates of the , appealed to the Pope to lead the Church back to the Upper Room in order to bring about a renewed life in the Spirit. Elena believed that the experience of the MASS INTENTIONS AND READINGS apostles in the Upper Room at Pentecost wasn’t simply an event of the Monday, May 10 past but an experience that is perpetually available to every Christian of St Damien de Veuster, Priest every age. Inspired by Sister Elena ’ s letters, Pope Leo issued a document Acts 16:11-15; Jn 15:26-16:4a in 1895 in which he asked the faithful to pray a solemn novena to the Holy Spirit every year between the feasts of the Ascension and 8:15 am Gary Pierron (Pierron) Pentecost. As commendable as this was, Elena kept writing and Tuesday, May 11 encouraged the Pope to teach more on the Holy Spirit. Thus, in 1897 the Acts 16:22-34; Jn 16:5-11 Pope promulgated an titledDivinum Illud Munus (On the Holy 12:00 pm Charles Parmenter (Eardly) Spirit). Yet, Elena still wasn ’ t satisfied. Determined, Elena kept writing Wednesday, May 12 and urged the Pope to pray the Veni Creator Spiritus (Come, Creator Sts Nereus and Achilleus, Martyrs Spirit) on behalf of the entire Church. On January 1, 1901, in St. Peter ’ s Basilica in , Pope Leo responded by solemnly singing the requested Acts 17:15, 22-18:1; Jn 16:12-15 prayer. In addition, he consecrated the whole 20th century to the Holy 8:15 am Judy Miller Cheesman (Pistone) Spirit. Thursday, May 13 Did you know this, that the 20th century was consecrated to the Holy Our Lady of Fatima Spirit? Did you know that in preparation for the Second Vatican Council, Acts 18:1-8; Jn 16:16-20 Pope John XXIII implored the Church to pray for a New Pentecost? Pope 8:15 am Jacqueline Trick (Trick) John XXIII himself prayed, “ Renew Your wonders in this our day, as by a Friday, May 14 new Pentecost. ” And Pope Benedict XVI proclaimed: “What we learn in the New Testament on charisms, which appeared as visible signs of the St Matthias, Apostle coming of the Holy Spirit, is not a historical event of the past, but a Acts 1:15-17; Jn 15:9-17 reality ever alive. It is the same divine Spirit, soul of the Church, that 8:15 am Marian Pact acts in every age and those mysterious and effective interventions of the Saturday, May 15 Spirit are manifest in our time in a providential way.” St Isidore Have you experienced this New Pentecost in your own life? In 2012, a Acts 18:23-28; Jn 16:23b-28 few months after graduating from college, I was prayed over at a retreat 5:00 pm Sp Int Hank Kishman and I experienced the love of God in a profoundly new way. After this, I found I had 1) a new thirst to be with God in prayer and 2) a new hunger (Ankerman) to make Jesus known to others (two fruits I believe the apostles The Ascension of the Lord, May 16 experienced after the first Pentecost). Since that retreat, I’ve Acts 1:1-11; Eph 1:17-23; Mk 16:15-20 continuously asked God to make Pentecost and its fruits manifest in my 7:30 am Bob Bolinger (Gambill) life. I want to invite you to ask the Holy Spirit to make Pentecost 10:00 am Living & Deceased of the Parish manifest in your life. Novena to the Holy Spirit- The novena in honor of the Holy Spirit is the oldest of all Outside Parish Clean Up novenas since it was first made at the direction of Our Lord Himself when He sent His Saturday May 15 from 9 apostles back to Jerusalem to await the coming of the Holy Ghost on the first Pentecost. It is still the only novena officially prescribed by the Church. Addressed to am to 1 pm. the Third Person of the Blessed Trinity, it is a powerful plea for the light and strength and love so sorely needed by every Christian. I am requesting that we pray this novena for our families and our world. There will be a link on the website for the novena, which consists of a different prayer for each day of the novena. The novena will begin on Saturday May 15 and conclude on Pentecost Sunday, May 23rd. To encourage devotion to the Holy Spirit, the Church has enriched this novena with the following indulgences: Those who make a private novena in honor of the Holy Spirit, either before the Solemn Feast of Pentecost or at any other time in the year, may also gain a partial indulgence for themselves or as an offering for the intentions of the faithful departed."

The next Rosary Walk at the Lange Estate is Sunday May 16 at 4 pm. Bring a side dish, salad or dessert to share for the meal after the walk is over.

Update Regarding Church Capacity On April 8, 2021 the governor signed a health order that states: “Other than the Facial Coverings (Masks) requirements of this Order, the Social Distancing, Congregating and capacity requirements of the Order do not apply to religious observances.” While the dispensation from the Sunday obligation remains in place, Archbishop Schnurr is keenly aware of the pressure upon our parish communities relative to seating capacity. Maintaining the other protocols in accord with the orders of State of Ohio health authorities (i.e. masking) and the archdiocesan guidelines Worship Together Safely, pastors may increase the potential capacity of church buildings, subject to any limitations by local health authorities (e.g. county board of health, city health department), which we have contacted and they have placed no special requirements for Miami County. The Miami County has instructed that masks/facial coverings must be worn. Beginning on Monday May 10, 2021 Transfiguration and St. Patrick parishes will be removing the ropes from most of the pews. We will be designating a section in each church for those individuals that wish to maintain physical distancing. For Transfiguration that section will be the front of the church on the choir side. We will continue to clean and sanitize, and follow all other health recommendations. Distribution of Holy Communion will continue with the same pattern as we have been using throughout the past year.
