Out of 36 states and UT’s in India, the family Sphaeroceridae is so far known only from 15 states and UT’s and maximum number of species reported from the state of West Bengal (26.98%). Among different biogeographic zones in India, the Indo-Gangetic Plains share maximum number of species (49.20%) whereas, Islands biogeographic zone has no record of these flies. The present communication is the first attempt in documenting the diversity, distribution and gaps in research of the family Sphaeroceridae from India. -

They often provide a novel function to the organism. Some species of sepsid flies (family Sepsidae) have evolved novel abdominal appendages on the fourth segment in males and are thought to be used during mating, to stimulate the female abdomen. Controlled laboratory experiments were conducted to identify the necessity of these appendages in sepsid Themira biloba. Surgical manipulation of the bristle length of the appendages, specifically the manipulation of long bristles; prevented successful mating. In-situ hybridization was done to examine the expression of abdominal-A and Abdominal-B genes in sepsid T. biloba, and to determine whether their expression has deviated in forming the appendages. However, the expression domains of these genes are conserved in T. -

Slez. Muz. Opava (A), 60: 223-233. Abstract: A pyramidal trap with combined bait is described and illustrated. The trap inserted above sapping stump of European walnut (Juglans regia) in a site in Central Bohemia near Uhlířské Janovice in 2010 yielded a rich spectrum of flies (Diptera). Records of 24 species most interesting from the faunistic, biological and nature conservancy point of view are given with comments upon their distribution and biology but a number of other captured species are also mentioned. Besides species developing in or attracted as adults to sap runs [e.g. Syrphidae: Ceriana conopsoides (Linnaeus, 1758), Aulacigastridae: three Aulacigaster spp., various Drosophilidae], other important components were formed by saproxylic [Xylomyidae: Solva marginata (Meigen, 1820), some Stratiomyidae, many Lonchaeidae, Milichiidae: Milichia ludens (Wahlberg, 1847), some Muscidae], mycophagous (some Asteiidae, Sphaeroceridae, Drosophilidae), necrophagous (some Sepsidae, Acartophtalmidae, Milichiidae, Sphaeroceridae) and saprophagous (some Sepsidae, Carnidae, Milichiidae, Sphaeroceridae) species, both latter attracted to meat-bait used in the trap. Bispinicerca Su & Liu, 2009, syn. nov., is synonymized with Opacifrons Duda, 1918 and the following new combinations are given: Opacifrons liupanensis (Su & Liu, 2009), comb. nov., Pseudopterogram- ma annectens (Richards, 1964), comb. nov., Pseudopterogramma brevivenosum (Tenorio, 1967), comb. nov., and Pseudopterogramma conicum (Richards, 1946), comb. nov. Thirty genera and 211 species were added to the family between 2000 and 2010, giving a current total of 141 genera and 1,550 species. A gallery with 32 macrophotographs is provided, depicting 32 species of 30 genera represen- ting 3 subfamilies of Sphaeroceridae. A world bibliography of Sphaeroceridae is supplemented with 306 references. Key words. Keywords Checklist, Finland, Diptera, Sphaeroceridae Introduction Sphaeroceridae or lesser dung flies are mostly small and dull dark brown to grey aca- lyptrate flies. They are easily distinguished from other acalyptratae because of the short and thickened basal tarsomeres of hind legs. Larvae of Sphaeroceridae develop in de- caying organic matter such as decaying vegetation, dung and rotten fungi. The family has gathered little interest among entomologists in Finland. Walter Hackman concentrated on the taxonomy of the subfamily Copromyzinae (Hackman 1965) and investigated the dipterous fauna, including sphaerocerids, in the burrows of small mammals (Hackman 1963). Hackman (1980) published the latest list of the Finnish sphaerocerid species. -

Epigaeic Diptera Brachycera from the coastal sand dunes of National Park Thy, Denmark Epigæiske fluer (Diptera Brachycera) fra klitterne i Nationalpark Thy Boy Overgaard Nielsen1*, Lise Brunberg Nielsen1 & Søren Toft1 1Genetics, Ecology and Evolution, Department of Bioscience, Aarhus University, Ny Munkegade 114- 116, DK-8000 Aarhus C, Denmark *Corresponding author, e-mail: [email protected] Abstract In 2013-2014 flies (Diptera Brachycera exclusive Calyptratae) active on the sand surface (epigaeic) were collected in pitfall traps in yellow and grey coastal sand dunes in National Park Thy, Denmark. A total of 15,670 flies of 227 species representing 31 families were captured. Sphaeroceridae, Dolichopodidae, and Chloropidae were particularly species- rich, contributing 61, 30 and 25 species, respectively. Twenty species were new to the Danish fauna (Appendix). Phoridae made up c. 40% of the flies captured, while Dolichopodidae and Chloropidae contributed c. 14% and c. 9% of the total catch. The species collected in yellow and grey dunes were ranked according to frequency. The ten most frequent species in yellow and grey dunes contributed c. 73% and c. 87% of the total fauna, respectively. Several species captured were few in number, e.g. 51 species and 46 species trapped in yellow and grey dunes, respectively, were singletons. The species composition and number of flies recorded from the two types of dune differed distinctly. The difference is further underlined by the indices of similarity (QS, Sørensen). The highest similarities were found between sites situated within yellow dunes or grey dunes, whereas the similarities between all combinations of sites in yellow and grey dunes were lower. -

Opava (A), 62: 155-172, 2013 DOI: 10.2478/cszma-2013-0017 The fauna of Acalyptrate families Trixoscelididae, Chyromyidae and Sphaeroceridae (Diptera) in the Gemer area (Central Slovakia): supplement 2 Jindřich Roháček The fauna of Acalyptrate families Trixoscelididae, Chyromyidae and Sphaeroceridae (Diptera) in the Gemer area (Central Slovakia): supplement 2. – Čas. Slez. Muz. Opava (A), 62: 155-172, 2013. Abstract: In the second supplement to the fauna of the Diptera Acalyptrata of the Gemer area (Slovakia) new records from the Muránska planina National Park are given. Based on the material examined, records of 2 species of Trixoscelididae, 1 species of Chyromyidae and 68 species of Sphaeroceridae are presented, with comments about their general distribution, biology, faunistic and/or nature conservation importance. Chyromya miladae Andersson, 1976 (Chyromyidae) and six species of Sphaeroceridae, viz. Borborillus uncinatus (Duda, 1923), B. vitripennis (Meigen, 1830), Norrbomia hispanica (Duda, 1923), N. somogyii (Papp, 1973), Leptocera oldenbergi (Duda, 1918) and Minilimosina (Svarciella) guestphalica (Duda, 1918), are new additions to the fauna of the Gemer area; 31 other species of Sphaeroceridae are added to the fauna of the Muránska planina NP. All these seven faunal additions belong to significant species in the area due to their association with threatened habitats, general rarity or because occurring on new limits of areas of their distribution. The importance of this family in this field of research was noted by Smith (1989), but 1 have found that in total, members of this family, and especially those belonging to the subfamily Limosininae, have massively outnumbered all other Cyc10rrhapha combined. Clearly the identification of this material is of paramount importance in the interpretation of these deposits but the existing literature is inadequate for this purpose and a reappraisal of the tuonomy of sphaerocerid puparia is essential. Pitkin (1988) provides references for the puparia of Sphaeroceridae described in the literature, and Okely (1974) gives keys for the identification of those which were then known. Whilst some may have been based upon misidentifications, the main problems were that some important features had been overlooked and that descriptions traditionally included trivial details emanating from the process of pupariation, and of structures common to most cyclorrhaphous puparia. The present paper aims to highlight characters which appear to be of taxonomic importance with a view to producing improved keys. -
Arthropods of Forensic Interest Associated to Pig Carcasses in Aiako Harria Natural Park (Basque Country, Northern Spain)

Saloña-Bordas2 Abstract: A checklist of carrion-related arthropods collected in associa- tion to pig carcasses in Aiako Harria Natural Park (Basque Country, nor- thern Spain) is presented. Leaving aside the subphylum Myriapoda, there are 16 orders represented in 7837 specimens, being the most important those of the class Insecta (7667 specimens; 98%). The moment in which they were present during the decomposition of a piglet carcass is detailed, and an analysis of the diversity of each decomposition stage was performed. Fresh stage is the moment when a higher degree of dominance and less diversity were found, being the dry stage the most diverse one. It should be stressed out the huge amount of new records: 2 new species for Science [Crossopalpus sp. n. (nr. nigritellus and aeneus) and Drapetis sp. n. (group exilis) (Diptera: Hybotidae)]; 1 genus (Alloborborus) and 8 species new for the Iberian Peninsula (Crossopalpus humilis, Meroplius fukuharai, Nemopoda speiseri, Sepsis luteipes, Alloborborus pallifrons, Phthitia empirica, Spelobia cambri- ca, Trachyopella kuntzei); 7 new species for Spain (Siphunculina aenaea, Siphunculina quinquangula, Megaselia citrinella, Megaselia meconicera, Megaselia tama, Pseudacteon formicarium, Ischiolepta denticulata); 1 new species for the peninsular Spain (Telomerina levifrons); 2 family, 12 genus and 29 species new for the Basque Country; and 1 family, 4 genus and 3 species new for Guipúzcoa. This study may serve as a reference for future forensic studies in the Basque Country and other similar biogeoclimatic areas.
