  • Robert Wise's the Day the Earth Stood Still Part I
Robert Wise’s The Day the Earth Stood Still Part I: A Religious Film? By Anton Karl Kozlovic Fall 2013 Issue of KINEMA ROBERT WISE’S THE DAY THE EARTH STOOD STILL Part I: A RELIGIOUS FILM? Abstract Science fiction (SF) films have frequently been the home for subtextual biblical characters, particularly Christ-figures. Crafting these sacred subtexts can make the difference between an ordinary filmandan exceptional one. This investigation intends to explore the religious and other dimensions of the 1951 SF cult classic The Day the Earth Stood Still directed by Robert Wise. In Part 1 of this analytical triptych, the film’s reception as a UFO film with political, artificial intelligence (AI), police and philosophical dimensions was canvassed. It was argued that Wise’s film contains all of the above genre dimensions; however, it can bemore fully appreciated as a profoundly religious film wrapped in contemporary scientific garb. The forthcoming parts will explore the factual elements of this proposition in far greater analytical detail. Introduction: SF and Sacred Storytelling Historically speaking, science fiction (SF) films(1) have harboured numerous hidden biblical characters in typically covert forms. For example, Barry McMillan described many an SF alien as ”a ’transcendent’ being - a benign entity who brings wisdom and knowledge, the imparting of which brings resolution, insight and the beginnings of personal or political harmony” (360). Whilst Bonnie Brain argued that: ”The ascendancy of the aliens derives strongly from their aura of religious authority. Teachers, mystics, priests, or prophets, capable of ”miracles” and, in some cases, ”resurrection,” these aliens flirt with divinity” (226).

Motion pictures such as Contact (997) and Species (995) have visualized the field with the tools available to filmmakers. The SETI Institute’s radio programAre WeAlone, hosted by astronomer Seth Shostak, makes the science a part of the heavily mediated environment of popular entertainment. There is also the small, robust field of historical and critical scholarship. It is in fiction, however, that SETI has found its most effective expression for general audiences. This medium provides literary arguments for why the science matters in contemporary life. I argue that it is fiction about SETI that helps us model the societal implications of extraterrestrial contact. Fiction writers such as James Gunn and writer-scientists such as Carl Sagan have produced a literary subgenre that I call the CETI (communication with extraterrestrial intelligence) novel.2 These writers take the science seriously and share an interest in . Plato, The Republic (New York:Vintage Books, 99), p. 274. 2. For the purpose of distinguishing it from the science (SETI),I use for the fiction the original acronym for the project: CETI or communication with extraterrestrial intelligence.

Here you’ll get the latest updates on film and digital production in Missouri and learn about creative media events happening across our state. From the Division of Tourism Director: I have read a few articles lately about cinematic abundance. Each article points out that the sheer quantity of movies in theaters has now reached a level not seen in decades. This is a good trend. Film culture is thriving. Also thriving is the awards season to recognize the best of the industry. The nominees for this year’s Academy Awards have been named and Jennifer Lawrence was nominated for her performance in Silver Linings Playbook which was the opening night film at last November's St. Louis International Film Festival. You might remember she was nominated for an Oscar in 2011 for her role as “Ree ” in the Missouri filmed Winter’s Bone. Good luck, Jennifer. We invite you to join the Missouri Film industry conversation through social media. MOFilmOffice is on now on Facebook with over 200 likes in the first 24 hours; Twitter @MOFilmOffice with 46 followers; and Pinterest as MOFilm Office- our first board is a collection of Missouri made movie posters.
