A Note from your Editor URGENT ! Distributors still required for Hello! Burton Village—Please contact the Editor!!!

And welcome to a New Year and a New Decade! With a new year we also have a number of new advertisers too. On you will find . Go to page for especially to everyone who has just moved into our Villages, don’t forget .

My thanks to Walter Robinson for the stunning cover photo he took in Scampton while taking Bomber for a walk one evening. We have have had some particularly wet weather so far this winter, but just occasion- ally, we have also experienced some memorable sunrises and sunsets too.

The Venture relies heavily on volunteers and I am profoundly grateful for the way each month they sort and distribute your magazine. Without them this magazine would certainly not exist. Is there anyone out there with a new year’s resolution to get fit? Well how about spending just a couple of hours 10 times a year to distribute your magazine. Its certainly going to be cheaper than a new membership at the Gym.

As usual, I have had the rewarding and challenging job of editing your magazine this month, seeing more new advertisers buying space as well as making sure there is space for all your regular village news and events. Could I please ask all village and event contributors to make certain they adjust their page size to A5 before they start to compile their news and please aim to be as concise as you can. Then there will be space for everyone! Bill Shaw You can also find a copy of the magazine every month at the Brattleby website. Items appearing in this magazine are accepted in good faith and do not necessarily reflect the opinions or views of the Committee or the Editor. The content and format of the magazine shall be at the absolute discretion of the Editor, Whose decision shall be final . e-mail: [email protected] Copy date for all Advertising in the next issue is 15th February

2018 Morrisons Soave

This delightfully uncomplicated white is from an area near to Italy’s Lake Garda. A dependable, everyday (rather than classically elegant) wine, it successfully delivers mellow apple and lemon fruit with a vaguely nutty texture attrac- tively enlivened by grapefruit acidity. (£4.35 at Morrisons)

2015 Squinzano Rossi Riserva Corte Aurelio

Page 12 e-mail: village. [email protected]

Hello, I’m Tina and I live at Walnut House in Ingham with Rob and our 9 year old dog. For decades I’ve worked with vulnerable age groups including teenagers in a residential re- habilitation centre for substance misuse. I look upon music as a time to reflect both good times and sad. These are eight of my favourite tracks:

Stone Roses – Fools Gold Love this song by this northern band from Manchester with its funky attitude and the use of the Wah-Wah pedal. The lyrics are almost whispered, such a good song. Depeche Mode – Personal Jesus - Formed in the mid 1980’s they created an alternative synth pop sound. The drum beat is stomping. Johnny Cash covered this track in a gospel style which still works well.‘ Someone to hear your prayers, someone who cares…’ Kraftwerk– Computer Love - Released in 1981 by this German Electronic band and went to No1 in the UK chart. This song is about the rise of computers in our society, it’s almost hypnotic. Radiohead – Creep - Thom Yorke the singer wrote this while at Exeter University about a girl he liked at the time. The song is quite mournful but I guess it’s about recognising who you are and not fitting into a box The Smiths – There is a light that never goes out - Released in 1992 this was the Smiths’ comeback record, inspired by James Dean’s character in ‘Rebel without a Cause’. A per- fect balance between Johnny Marr’s musical skills and Morissey’s lyrics and voice New Order – Blue Monday - The longest song I’ve ever heard but the drum machine and synthesiser make this an incredible track. Released three years after the death of Joy Division’s singer, Ian Curtis, it was influenced by new music tech electronica The Cure – A Forest - I don’t always listen to The Cure but when I play this it’s played again and again. Just love it Fleetwood Mac – The Chain - To me this song is about resilience. The whole band had an input into this song and I enjoy its melody. Sometimes in life you can be in the middle of nowhere and this is when you find your own resilience I’d have to take 2 books away with me: Terrifying Tales by Edgar Allan Poe. He had a knack of getting into your head and tapping into your fear. Spine tingling. The Shining by Stephen King which is also one of my favourite films by Stanley Kubrick. My luxury item has to be a king size bed complete with duvet and soft pillows. ’I ll be hungry and bored on the island but I’ll have a great night’s sleep.

Village Island Discs is open to anyone. If you would like to choose your selection, Please call John Woolley on 01522 731574 or e mail [email protected]

We were sorry to read that our puppy Mia is offending people by protecting her boundary by barking and running along the fence. She is only 11 months old and still learning. Hopefully the person who complained has noticed that Mia now goes out on a lead at all times to do her business in the garden and is not left to bark at people passing her boundary this is very limiting for her but if it makes the person who made the com- plaint happy then so be it. I would just like to say that her barking and running up and down wasn't seen as a worry when she spotted youths on top of the porta loo in the church grounds and sent them running. Please if you have a problem with our dog come and tell us the owners not the Parish Council, they can’t help you we can. People are quick to blame but not to praise. We hope you all had a very Happy Christmas and a Prosperous New Year.

Kay & Mal Shields, 3 High Street, Scampton

Ann Brooks would like to thank Lesley Wolsey and Jan Black- bourne for the work that they put into the flowers around the Brattleby signs and the tubs of flowers at the end of Back Lane. They so enhance the look of the village, and have been a great pleasure to see all through the year.

FRESH from ALISON’S “NEW KITCHEN”

Ingredients:

Chicken 1 tbsp olive oil Casserole 8 chicken pieces such as breasts, thighs or drumsticks 1 onion, finely sliced 2 garlic cloves, crushed 2 celery sticks, thickly sliced 2 carrots, cut into 2cm (¾ inch) chunks 2 leeks, cut into 2cm (¾ inch) chunks 600g (1lb 6oz) potatoes, peeled and cut into large chunks 1 level tbsp plain flour 600 ml (1 pint) hot chicken stock

2 rosemary sprigs Half a lemon

Most, if not all, of these ingredients should be available from Ingham Village Mini-Market (where the proprietor may offer incredible discounts if you mention Alison by name).

Method:

Heat oil in a large, flameproof casserole. Season chicken pieces and brown all over for 10min. Remove and set aside. Drain fat from the pan. Pour just 1 tsp oil back in to the pan and discard the rest. Preheat oven to 200oC (180oC fan oven) mark 6.

Add the onion, garlic, celery, carrots, leeks and potatoes to the pan, and cook, stirring, for 5-10 mins. Stir in the flour, cook for 2min, then pour in the stock. Season well, then return the browned chicken to the pan. Add the rosemary, squeeze over the juice from the lemon half and pop the squeezed lemon half into the pan. Cover and bring the casserole to the boil.

Cook in the oven for 25- 30min until the chicken is cooked through and the sauce is piping hot and thickened.

Our more astute readers will observe that rather than referring to Alison’s Kitchen, we have headed this page as Alison’s New Kitchen. The reason for restyling this par- ticular article is that the home of fine cuisine has relocated. It is now situ- ated elsewhere in Ingham village and boasts top of the range cookery equipment. Alison and her ever-charming husband have assured us that the new premises were carefully checked out (and cleansed) before the relocation took place. Normal service will continue as before.

Page 28 e-mail: village. [email protected] SCAMPTON PARISH COUNCIL At the meeting held on Thursday 5th December the following matters were discussed: Matters raised by the public – Mr Ulyat, who was not able to be present had asked about the batteries/solar panels for the speed sign indicators, which were not holding their charge. It was reiterated that he had the Council’s approval to buy what ever was neces- sary to sort the problem out. He should keep the Clerk informed. Bus Shelter – The new waste bin had been purchased and was awaiting installation. We were still waiting for a reply from WLDC regarding the supply of a new dog waste bin. Closure of RAF Scampton – There is still nothing official to report. It was agreed unani- mously agreed that the surplus mince pies be donated to the church for their carol service and to the school for their Christmas Fayre. Everyone who supported the event was thanked. Getting to Know You If it goes a bit quiet in the pub, on the bus or even at home try asking one of these to get those conversations going. Remember-----it’s good to talk! Name two historical figures you would invite to your home for dinner

Would you rather have beautiful eyes or a fabulous body?

When did you last climb a tree? Do you make your bed every morning or do you leave it unmade?

If you were a potato, how would you like to be cooked? If you could give one sentence of advice to your younger self about how to live life , what would it be ?

Another year has passed, and we have entered a new Decade, I’m sure many of us gave some thought to changes we would like to make to our lives starting in 2020.

Every year, millions of people make New Year’s resolutions, hoping to spark positive change. The recurring themes each year include a more active approach to health and fitness, improved finances, and learning new things for personal and professional development. Chances are, more than a couple of the top 10 most common resolutions will look familiar to you: Exercise more Lose weight Get organized Learn a new skill or hobby Live life to the fullest Save more money / spend less money Quit smoking Spend more time with family and friends Travel more Read more

Page 45 e-mail: village. [email protected] The 19th January is called Quitters Day as this is the date most people are likely to give up on their resolution. Recent study shows 26% quit within 2 weeks of starting and only 19% of people actually achieve their goals.

How to keep your resolution

You don’t have to start it on 1st January , begin when you are ready Create a goal for yourself, what weight do you want to lose? Identify your action steps – what do you need to do, clear out my fridge, book on a slimming class? Track your progress, am I losing weight?

Resolutions have been around for many years, in Medieval times Knights took a “Peacock Vow” to reaffirm commitment to Chivalry. Romans began each year with a promise to the God Janus (that’s how we get January)

The concept of a resolution is to reflect on your self improvement but we can do so many other things to improve the way we live and the world in which we live.

Say Hello when you pass some- one in your village or street Smile at more people Make that call to someone you haven’t heard from in a while Check on a neighbour who lives alone.

So let’s aim at being one of the 19% for from February, March or whenever is best for you . Happy New Year !!
