1 Akasha (Space) and Shabda (Sound): Vedic and Acoustical perspectives M.G. Prasad Department of Mechanical Engineering Stevens Institute of Technology Hoboken, New Jersey [email protected] Abstract A sequential ordering of five elements on their decreasing subtlety, namely space, air fire, water and earth is stated by Narayanopanishat in Atharva Veda. This statement is examined from an acoustical point of view. The space as an element (bhuta) is qualified by sound as its descriptor (tanmatra). The relation between space and sound and their subtle nature in reference to senses of perception will be presented. The placement of space as the first element and sound as its only property will be discussed in a scientific perspective. Introduction The five elements and their properties are referred to in various places in the Vedic literature. An element is the substance (dravya) which has an associated property (of qualities) termed as guna. The substance-property (or dravya- guna) relationship is very important in dealing with human perception and its nature through the five senses. Several Upanishads and the darshana shastras have dealt with the topic of substance-property (see list of references at the end). The sequential ordering of the five elements is a fundamental issue when dealing with the role of five elements and their properties in the cosmological evolution of the universe. At the same time the order of the properties of elements is also fundamental issue when dealing with the perception of elements is also a through five senses. This paper focuses attention on the element-property (or dravya-guna) relation in reference to space as the element and sound as its property. -

But, I am fortunate to have found friends, colleagues, and mentors who have inspired me to make this laborious task far from arduous. It was Frederick M. Asher, my advisor, who inspired me to turn to places where art historians do not usually venture. The temple city of Khajuraho is not just the exquisite 11th-century temples at the site. Rather, the 11th-century temples are part of a larger visuality that extends to contemporary civic monuments in the city center, Rick suggested in the first class that I took with him. I learnt to move across time and space. To understand modern Vrindavan, one would have to look at its Mughal past; to understand temple architecture, one would have to look for rebellions in the colonial archive. Catherine B. Asher gave me the gift of the Mughal world – a world that I only barely knew before I met her. Today, I speak of the Islamicate world of colonial Vrindavan. Cathy walked me through Mughal mosques, tombs, and gardens on many cold wintry days in Minneapolis and on a hot summer day in Sasaram, Bihar. The Islamicate Krishna in my dissertation thus came into being. -

To trace the detrimental effects of colonialism on both environment and people in Sea of Poppies, this study foregrounds the reflection of the obligatory cultivation of poppy under the rule of British colonizers in India. Sea of Poppies is indeed a portrayal of the catastrophic policies enforced in India by British colonizers in the nineteenth century. In his seminal novel Ghosh deals with the changes brought about by the lucrative cultivation of poppy in the exacerbation of the financial status of indigenous subjects. Environmental devastation and the changes in the normal behavior of animals are also dealt with. -

Who are the Buddhist Deities? Bodhisatta, receiving Milk Porridge from Sujata Introduction: Some Buddhist Vipassana practitioners in their discussion frown upon others who worship Buddhist Deities 1 or practice Samadha (concentrationmeditation), arguing that Deities could not help an individual to gain liberation. It is well known facts, that some Buddhists have been worshipping Deities, since the time of king Anawratha, for a better mundane life and at the same time practicing Samadha and Vipassana Bhavana. Worshipping Deities will gain mundane benefits thus enable them to do Dana, Sila and Bhavana. Every New Year Burmese Buddhists welcome the Sakka’s (The Hindu Indra God) visit from the abode of thirty three Gods - heaven to celebrate their new year. In the beginning, just prior to Gotama Buddha attains the enlightenment, many across the land practice animism – worship spirits. The story of Sujata depicts that practice. Let me present the story of Sujata as written in Pali canon : - In the village of Senani, the girl, Sujata made her wish to the tree spirit that should she have a good marriage and a first born son, she vowed to make yearly offering to the tree spirits in grateful gratitude. Her wish having been fulfilled, she used to make an offering every year at the banyan tree. On the day of her offering to the tree spirit, coincidentally, Buddha appeared at the same Banyan tree. On the full moon day of the month Vesakha, the Future Buddha was sitting under the banyan tree. Sujata caught sight of the Future Buddha and, assuming him to be the tree-spirit, offered him milk-porridge in a golden bowl. -

Introduction and background to the article on the future of Yoga in the West **updated version from 03.12.16, since first publishing** I began this project (which is now much more of a process) on a (seemingly) simple request to write an article on the future of Yoga in the west for Hindu Human Rights. Knowing yet another firstperson “State of the (Yoga) Union” address would essentially have zero value in light of the bigger issues in western Yoga world, I decided to base the project around a series of interviews with different people who had been involved in the discussion of how we got to where we are, i.e., this “Wild West, anything goes” concept of Yoga. Suffice it to say, as the conversations began, the project became infinitely more complex. Each one of the interviews highlighted something specific to framing the issues; each of the voices provided a myriad of “jumping off” points for further investigation and research. And with many other key collaborators besides the interviewees also involved, the depth and complexity of the topic expanded incredibly. Really, the “digging into” the topic could go on forever, but at a certain point the “getting it out” needs to take precedence in light of all that is at stake here. All that said, given the extensive subject matter and all of the nuance and information involved as well as all that has arisen throughout the process of interviews and related research the future of Yoga in the west article will be published in a series of three parts: Part I (as follows herein), “Adharmic Alliance: How the ivory tower helped Yoga Alliance “certify” Yoga as secular and detach it from its Hindu roots”: ● The first part frames the issues of Yoga in the west, and specifically the westernization of Yoga, around a case study of “Sedlock v. -

Social movements & saving rivers: What can be learned from the Narmada? Harry Blair ([email protected]) Yale-TERI Workshop on the Yamuna River: A Confluence of Waters, a Crisis of Need 3 January 2011 Like the Yamuna, the Narmada has long been esteemed as one of India’s five most sacred rivers. And like the Yamuna, the Narmada has long been regarded by many as a place of unacceptable degradation of the environment and threat to the local human population. But while the Narmada has been the focus of a decades-long social movement protesting outside intrusions, the Yamuna thus far has not. Are there some worthwhile lessons from the Narmada experience that could inform future activity to redeem the Yamuna? This paper and conference presentation argue that a number of valuable lessons can be distilled from the Narmada saga. The principal theme of these lessons is civil society advocacy. “Civil society” can be defined as organized activity not part of the state, the private sector or the family, in which people act to promote mutual interests. “Advocacy” in turn can be defined as the process through which individuals or organizations endeavor to influence public policy making and implementation. Thus “civil society advocacy” would mean efforts on the part of civil society organizations (CSOs) to influence state behavior. Since the late 1940s, a series of plans has aimed to harness the Narmada River through dams to provide hydropower and irrigation. The centerpiece of the whole enterprise has been the last dam before the river empties into the Arabian Sea, the huge structure at Sardar Sarovar. -
